after staring at this "handrails and bsllusters" for 15 years, I've decided to take a plunge and replace. got a couple of estimates with different options and it seems like the best thing to do is to open the sides, pit and end bracket on the ends on the threads and then install white square spindles, to have a bit of a modern look. it gets expensive if I decide to take off a carpet, as if need to refinish or replace threads. do you all think it will look good with the carpet still on? I'm also considering painting the exposed sides on of the risers white, while keeping the carpet on. my preferred look is in the last picture, with a turning staircase.

I never liked those stair caes they always looked DIY to me and not good either. Have you pulled up the carpet on one tread to see what is under it it looks to me like the tread is the same under the carpet in which case just strip and stain since you are redoing the rest . IMO trying to paint with the carpet on will be a disaster

I haven't pulled the carpet yet, but it is the same. you are right about the painting with carpet on...

so you think sanding and staining would look good? my other option is to completely replace the threads and risers, but that seems wasteful, since the stairs are in good condition from what I can tell

Well, if you decide to stay with the solid tread/risers (IMHO... the best, but I'm biased), and you remove the side boards... the best application would be to replace the treads, because if you keep them, the exposed ends would need to have, what we call "returns", and it's probably not feasible to add them to the existing treads.
