What rug for small condo living room?

Hi all!

I am looking for a rug (8x10) to warm up my small condo living room. What do you all recommend for colors? Pattern or no pattern? The walls are white, sofa is natural linen color, surrounding cabinetry is dark grey on bottom, white on top, and the artwork above sofa is light grey with pops of blue, red, green, and yellow. The other elements in my condo are natural wood and a couple of copper small appliances that add warmth. Thanks!

I would keep the wood shade you already have on the credenza and chair and try to get an end table to match that. I also think some metallic gold/ bronze accents would work very nicely here. Maybe you can consider a antique gold finish for your art.

For the ottoman, a leather in a taupe/grey or even a blush tone would work.

If you are not comfortable with using too much blush, mix up the blush pillows with a light grey or blue that you have in your rug.

I forgot to mention that I like your idea for the ceiling fixture. that, along with your TV and if you change the frames of your art to black will help ground the room with some black, IMO. If you want to change up your coffee table, I think you could also get something light and airy feeling with some black metal legs for a little more black. I think an oval shape could work too. I have some ideas below for coffee tables, end tables and also a small drink table to go next to your chair. different textures like metal, acrylic, marble and wood can all look great. also, perhaps a pouff or two that can be moved around the room as needed might be cute.

I have tried to upload photos in the daylight twice but it won’t work all at once. I will post them in smaller groups.

These are hard to photograph. The idea is to switch to black frames for now, but they will probably eventually be moved to the bedroom. I would like one large piece of art above the sofa.

I love the new console. And I really do like your existing rug. Perhaps changing out the coffee table to something less heavy will let the rug stand out a bit better. If you're ready to purchase a new side table, how about painting your current table in the darkest gray shade in your rug? I think it would add the darker color you're looking for but won't be as heavy as black would.

Love your space! Love the artwork! If you ever feel like splurging, nonrefllective glass makes a big difference.

I see some gold and glass in here.

how about an acrylic table to let the rug be seen thru?

What type of pendant light would you recommend for above kitchen island? I purchased the 3 arm Serge Mouille replica in black (the photo I posted in the thread) to replace ceiling fan/light.

I think that will be the focal piece of lighting in the open living room-kitchen space and don’t want the lighting fixtures to compete.

We lightened ours up. Why not replace the solid coffee table?

Is it an optical illusion or is the picture on the right above the couch at a different height than the other two? It looks lower to me. Minor, but curious. Love what you’ve done so far.

Natesg, it’s not an optical illusion! The three pictures need to be aligned. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet ;)

This is a new black & white rug I am trying in the space. I feel like this one adds a little more contrast with white walls and linen sofa. What are your thoughts versus more traditional vintage turkish rug?

I prefer your vintage Turkish rug. It looks way more upscale than the black and white one. You've done a nice job.

Like Turkish rug best. It will also stand the test of time. Pull the chair back a little.

Thanks for all the comments! I agree the vintage Turkish rug is more unique and beautiful, but I guess I am struggling in figuring out how to use the pastel colors in the rug in the decor without making everything too light & feminine. I don’t want the pillows to be baby blue and/or pink...

I absolutely love those pillows that Flo suggests. It will make your room so so unique and hip. With the ceiling fixture you are thinking about combined with the vintage credenza you have....just love it!!!!

The pastel rug goes better with the art over the sofa. Flo's textured pillows would look great here.

I do think you need a new, airier coffee table with it though.

Re pictures. You can paint the current frames black. Tape out the glass and carefully spray or brush. Pick up some adjustable picture hangers.....lifesavers for hanging multiple pictures at the same height.

    Adjustable picture hooks.

It feels like there are two aesthetics fighting for attention in this room....the condo is contemporary and your taste is eclectic...For that reason, the art is too understated and should be more colorful/powerful...the rug is also a little too understated which is why you probably started with the desire to replace it...the art and the gorgeous rug may work in your bedroom as that is a space where these serene pieces will be more appropriate...to keep your look balanced i would remove all the stuff on the kitchen counter on the left... as it detracts from your other more interesting clutter displayed on the right...to choose a rug i would look at more ethnic..textural options..perhaps on the small side to just ground the chunky coffee table...(which is a good choice as it will serve well to put your feet up on )

One last suggestion....the kitchen stools are a kind of non statement as is and would be more interesting if the legs were painted a color or a combination of colors to further connect the kitchen to the living area look

Until you find a side table you like, that one could easily have the legs cut down and be painted. A new lamp will balance the height, and table lamps can be found at all price points so it doesn’t have to be permanent either.

I hate to see dark frames around your art. Maybe paint the wall a contrasting color so they stand out?

If you decide to go a little bolder...

So many options - now the dilemma is which way to go!

I think I am going with a darker rug and moving the light one to the bedroom. Art will eventually be moved too. I like more contrast in the living room. However, the darker rug is about a foot longer... (8x11)

this is another gorgeous rug!!! love it and the size is fine. can you take a broader pic of the room so I can see how wide the rug is and where it reaches.

cute xmas tree. are you thinking that you will be putting anything like a small table and a couple chairs in the area of the xmas tree. if so, I might consider adding a smaller rug like maybe a cow hide and put part of it under the 8x11 so it overlaps. otherwise I might just move the couch over some once the tree gets taken down

Thanks! That’s a good idea to move the couch over some. I just didn’t know if to center the couch with the credenza or to move it over some to where it is more centered on the rug. It’s a bit of an awkward layout.

Update- this is what the condo looks like now. It is starting to feel more finished and like home! I finally picked a new rug, this black, gray and white Indian rug. Bought a new light fixture (Serge Muille style), coffee table (gray leather ottoman with lucite legs), and MCM Danish asymmetrical side table from a used furniture store.

    Looks terrific!

I love it all, especially the ceiling light fixture and your new MCM side table. like your little eating area too with the two different chairs... the look is very personal and looks curated over time. I'm assuming you put the original rug in your bedroom. the new one is great too! it sounds like you are very happy with it! yeah

Very nice. I really like the artwork over your kitchen desk. You might consider a subtle wallpaper or a different color paint just for the wall behind the tv. You don't want small art since you have the shelves on the area to the left, but I think it would be nice to have something simple on that wall. Or just use a mount for your guitar on the wall to the left of the tv. It clears the floor space and provides some interest at the same time. Great space!

    lima1985 thanked calidesign

not sure if you need more seating, but I think the living area has room for a chair, possibly at angle looking into the room from the corner near the guitar...

Looking good. I agree - a couple more chairs needed as it won't be a confortable

situation when guests are over, all in a row on the sofa.

Looks great! Love your rug. You could get a small footprint chair for that guitar corner. Or just live with it and use the chairs by the table when you have guest. If you have multiple gatherings and you heed more than the 2 extra seats, add another.
