I'm thinking of using this wallpaper, so you feel like you're in the ocean (I live in a beach town and love to snorkel and used to scuba). Fun? Tacky? My house is a 1940 bungalow so I want it to feel vintage-y. The room is narrow, so I'll either skip the wainscoting or do faux wainscoting (attach molding to fake it, maybe a board and batten style or ?)

Did you try google? I found several, most of which were porthole "like". But Restoration Hardware has the real thing at a price! RH Porthole Med Cab. 25" diameter and $535 unless you are a member. These people have one for far less, but it is only 14.5 x 15 inches. Here, look at the rest of the search results for yourself. I don't know what you are willing to accept as porthole-enough. thanks Nancy. Yes I had googled and aside from the RH one (which seemed too big), all the rest looked like mirrors and not medicine cabinets.

21 " porthole med cab. I have no idea who this company is, though. I see what you mean, a lot of Asian companies putting up pictures of them but not really selling them, then a whole lot of sites that seem to have them and lead you back to RH.

I think the paper is more than enough nautical message. . A great mirror is all you need- love the rope accent, in your inspo and that is plenty of "theme". PS The larger the mirror, the brighter the room will feel, and medicine cabinets are more limiting in that regard.

I'd considered a wall-to-wall mirror (since the vanity will be wall to wall) but that feels too contemporary for my 1940 bungalow (feels very 1980s, right?). Plus I'd lose a chance to add some style with the mirror. I've seen pics of powder rooms where they do a narrow and tall mirror. The room is 37 1/2 wide. What size mirror do you think would be good?

@JAN MOYER thanks for your early comments on this room in another thread. I'd been planning to add a sun tunnel to this room but you thought it wasn't necessary. So I conferred with my architect and we moved it out to the hallway next to this powder room. (it's centered on this doorway, so I'll probably put a mirror on the hallway to bounce a little light into the powder room). You also mentioned adding a small fan. Thanks. That hadn't even been on my radar.

Sweetie, its a powder room, not a bathing facility. Do the business, wash hands, touch up hair, lipstick perhaps and OUT. Nobody is giving themselves a gel mani in there. : ) nor plucking their eyebrows. Don't get trapped in over lighting it. Once the door is closed, only the light within shall count, and it need not be surgical in quality. You have electricity, and you will use it. Otherwise? Ask the arch for a PORTHOLE round window over the loo. which I assume is not possible lol. or you would have done it.

@JAN MOYER LOL. Thanks for keeping it real. FWIW, I do want this to be fairly useful when I have multiple overnight guests. (so they aren't all waiting to use the full guest bath). Maybe more importantly, it's the bathroom I will use when I come in from gardening. (it's near the door from the garage). So I want it nice for me! ;)

Recessed, a fan, sconces, some minimal necessary supplies! You aren't goona use it for more than that and the overflow guest will use it the same way

Also, if you're going for a vintage feel, the Toto Promenade is a great style. I have 2 of them in my old home.

Oh yes I do like the Clayton--I have it in my master bath. The Promenade is also a good choice for a vintage feel--it's a bit more straightlined than the Clayton.

In a small room, a wall hung sink and toilet should make cleaning easier.

If you choose anything resembling the "usual" toilet, then choose a mid-height style rather than the shorter style -- your knees will thank you for it as you get older.

@JAN MOYER and @Diana Bier Interiors, LLC thanks for your suggestions. I pulled up the spec sheets and both of those toilets have tanks that are about 5” narrower than the Eco-Clayton’s flared top. So they seem like a better fit for this narrow room. I’m leaning towards the Promenade II but want to sleep on it. (It’s a bit cheaper, too). Thank you both for your help.

Does anyone have thoughts on the vanity? My thought: a strausser 36" in lapis blue with a 37" china top to create a "built in." (the room is framed 37.5 per my GC).

They have different door styles: shaker, "deco miter" and ogee. I'd buy my own hardware.

A) I was told this first one is a nightmare as a built-in (impossible to clean beneath)

B) recessed toe kick. (I don't love the arch, but maybe I'll get used to it)

C) this has been my first choice but the storage is limited--zero drawers! (though the doors are functional. And I could put a basket on the shelf)

You'll get the largest feel with a pedestal sink. Also the most vintage feel . You are trying to make into a BATH It won't be that and guest won't expect it.

It’s 37.5 x 98. I would like some storage and a wide enough counter so it won’t feel cramped. I had considered one of those console sinks with a shelf beneath.

This company makes these. This little 8” one is easily converted to a mirror (Glass is removable). Could put small shelves on wall inside of porthole. They have other sizes. You might give them a call.

A powder room doesn’t need a medicine cabinet. Buy the porthole mirror and it will be fine. The navy vanity will also work but it doesn’t seem to go with the original post of wallpaper. Maybe my monitor is off but I don’t see any navy blue in that paper.

My idea had been to store the household first aid supplies in the powder room medicine cabinet: they have to go somewhere and it’s the first room you pass when you come in through the garage (so easy access if there are mishaps outside). But the medicine cabinet idea is not going to work anyway, since I can’t recess it. Yes, I’ve been wondering about that navy vanity with that wallpaper. I want to get a sample to hold up. Thanks for the confirmation that I‘m not crazy here. ;)

That looks like a pottery barn "everyday value" that you assemble at home (blah. quality?). Plus that's not a functional drawer, but a flip down door.

Ronbow has this. The lower drawer pulls out to a u-shaped drawer 4 3/8" tall, so I could stash TP and basic first aid supplies. I could place a basket on the shelf (for blow dryer for visiting guests etc). Plus the basket would add some much-needed texture.

Here's another ronbow with more storage (though the website says it's out of stock; not sure what that means: discontinued or on backorder or ? I can call). I'm still leaning towards that one above, which might look better w/ better knobs/pulls.

I also reconsidered a pedestal sink or a console sink, but I want some basic storage. Also, I noticed that those look great with a statement floor. My idea was to have the fun wallpaper and possibly accessorize and choose a neutral floor ; it will be the same tile as the adjoining hallway (the entrance from garage).

FWIW, here's a console sink I like. Not sure if it even goes with my 1940 bungalow (is it an earlier period? too Victorian?)

I don't believe the round med/cabs I posted have to be recessed, especially if you cannot see behind them based on the side of your bathroom.

BeverlyFLADeziner , thanks for posting those. (since I was off looking at vanities, I'd forgotten about the mirror vs. medicine cabinet issue--the reason I started this thread! lol). Do you think it would be obtrusive, sticking about 4" out. The vanity is probably 22" and the whole room is tiny. I like that it's round, so a suggestion of a porthole w/o being over-the-top. Or maybe just a flat round mirror and a small vanity for storage??? thanks!

I would totally do the oversized porthole, even if I had to put it over the toilet and hang a boring mirror over the sink. It won't stick out too far if it's over the toilet. Yes to the fish, unless you can get sea monsters. :)

Fori that's an interesting idea, to put it over the mirror. But do people (er, men) like to look at themselves while they are doing their business??? With mirrors on each side of the room, they'd be reflecting each other and could turn into the endless room of fish! ;)

Hi everyone, thanks for your thoughts. I’m still waiting for the wallpaper sample to arrive, but I want to use that fish wallpaper, with wainscoting on the bottom. When I have the sample, I can see if it goes with that blue vanity (#1). If not, I guess I’ll go with white. I love the look of the console sinks but I need some sort of storage in that room. (FWIW, some of the Ronbow vanities size/style combos have been discontinued)
