De-blah this beige house

last modified: 6 years ago

We just bought this place and are trying to infuse some more modern mid-century-inspired decor on the inside. The exterior needs some love. I was thinking of painting the window trims and getting a new door to match. Maybe a blue-gray slate? There is definitely too much beige for my taste. Any other ideas?

I’m wondering if removing the railing, and replacing the turned porch support with a simple squared off post might update the facade? Also squaring off the garage door opening?

Good idea, flopsycat1. Remove the railings for a cleaner look. Support the overhang with a wood and stone pillar that matches a possible garage pergola.

you won't get MCM out of this house, but you can get more of a modern look.

replace those colonial looking porch posts w/natural Fir or Cedar, in a squared off shape.

    remove the railings.

    replace lights.

can you paint the trim around the windows a darker color?

paint the siding a gray or pick a color from the stone.

could look something like this color combo.

as for garage door, you could break it up by adding some windows and painting it a darker shade. notice the accent over this one.

the siding is Kendall Charcoal. wood doors w/lights and new lights.

I wouldn't try to go modern here. This exterior has too many craftsman elements for that. I would square off the garage door, remove rail and replace post, and get a craftsman door.

House looks white to me. I'd leave it that color, or choose a color from the stone.

Consider changing the porch roof by creating a shed roof beginning from just beneath the garage roof to shed its water to the left of the front porch rather than onto the front step.

Have that new porch roof extend the entire length/depth of the garage, all alongside the garage and keep it the same width as it is now. Be sure that shed roof will clear the bottom right corner of the upstairs window over the entry door.

Continue that same roof line an additional a foot or so beyond (in front of) the front exterior wall of the garage so you can add a mirror slope to the roof from it's point at the side of the garage down to the right side over the front of the garage to create a forward facing gable over the entry porch.

Yourfront porch floor should end even with the front exterior wall of the garage. Add your favorite bold color to either your front door and/or to the front of the forward facing gable of your new porch roof.

Would want the garage door and trim that same color as your siding. Do like the medium/dark gray suggested by second pic of groveraxle.

I am blown away by these ideas. I clearly came to the right place. We may need to start small due to budget but we Are going to use your feedback to come up with a plan to hopefully improve our house’s curb appeal over the Next year or two. Thank you!!!
