In an open space the second option is terrible; what size are the tiles? Consider changing the direction in the first layout and have the tiles go east to west.

Thanks, the tiles are 1 x 2.5m. Changing the direction (east to west) makes sense, but it's a long house and that would emphasise the length even more?

It's fine, as it follows the layout of the space best. And likely preferable to just having one center seam. How much pattern does your selection have?
