TV size for above fireplace

I realizz (lame attempt at Houzz humor!) that mounting a TV above a fireplace is, at best, controversial. That said, if I DO decide to go that route, I'm trying to decide if I should get a larger TV. For me, he more like a cinema the better, but obviously I don't want to go TOO large for the space.

In the picture below my current TV -- a 60" -- is marked with a black rectangle. The red rectangle represents a 65", which would basically align with the edge of the fireplace uprights. If I were to go for a 70", it would likely align with the edge of the mantle.

I'm thinking 70" is probably too big, and that 65" might be just right. Thoughts?

(Apologies for my poor photo editing.)

Thanks,

Greg

I like the idea of matching the width of the fireplace surrounds, not your mantle width. But, what's the reason for the change? 65 is not that much larger than 60, but you probably can get TVs with more capability in the 65" size. Some people complain about TVs mounted so high, but if your viewing furniture reclines, then I think high mounts are find. Just my opinion!

Thanks @mtvhike. You're right that 60" and 65" are not much different in size. Mine's not 4K, though, and it would be nice to upgrade to the better picture and features :-)

A related question (though not exactly design specific): Do you think having a fancy swivel/tilt adjustable mount is worth it when mounting above the fireplace?

The point of the TV is its use as an appliance to view content. Get the size that is appropriate for your viewing habits and distance from the screen. The "look" is secondary to the functionality.

Do you have a use for a swivel/adjustable mount? Then get it. Monoprice dot com is my go-to source for them. Good stuff, lots and lots of choices, and great prices.

Thanks @badabing2! Actually, I just ordered one on Sunday. It should arrive tomorrow. I think it will be a good choice.

    Will do, @badabing2.

@badabing2 Some feedback on the mount, now that it has been installed about a week: I like it. It's very well made and heavy. I do find it quite difficult to move up and down, though. (You need to "put your back into it" to get it to move. I think a child or old person might be unable to.) Also -- and this isn't really a criticism, but an observation -- mounting the soundbar was challenging. Since the mounting mechanism is meant to support basically any type of soundbar, it's less than ideal, and I feel the soundbar isn't firmly mounted. It's basically hanging there, and I need to be careful to not knock it off it's support. But, reality is, I don't know that they could have done it much differently while still supporting so many soundbar designs. It's a good mount overall.
