Brushed nickel or oil rubbed bronze fixture?

last modified: 6 years ago

Half bathroom in a small townhouse. Fixing up what we can on the cheap! Installed the new light fixture and I like it enough, but I can’t decide on the faucet- brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze? What style? I keep reading that it’s okay to mix metals, and I can’t figure out which would look best in this small space. Still some small things to do- hang mirror, finish trim, etc. *Also need to know which finish for toilet paper holder and towel ring. Base cabinet is white. Still need wall art, shelves, decor... Pic looks a lot darker than the room actually is. It’s nice and bright. Light and socket covers are old and I guess they should be replaced, too? I know it’s unfortunate that the cabinet isn’t wall-to-wall, but we didn’t to spend any more $ to have it custom fit (our walls are wonky!). It already looks so much better than before and we will be selling soon. Our neighborhood is typically starter homes.

    Brushed nickel, definitely.

I’m usually matchy-matchy with bathrooms but I think the brushed nickel like you have on the switch plate would be nice for the faucet/accessories. Delta Dryden came to mind if you like a traditional/slightly Art Deco look but something modern like Moen Gibson would look good, too.

Should I change the light to brushed nickel to match or can I leave it? Could also use help with the rest of the decor for this bathroom! Thanks, all!

The Delta Dryden is nice. Thanks for that suggestion. (FYI- Faucet must be 4” center set.) @shopping37

Would leave the light fixture in the bronze. Re decorating, I often put my kids artwork (daughter was an art major but I had their scribbles framed when they were younger) or cartoons in my bathrooms but also like botanicals. Use white frames for soothing look/brown if you want them to pop.

IMO this is a spce where you can have some fun why not wallpaper or a paint color a bit more colorful or art as for the faucet brushed mickel and I dont think fancy light plates are ever good. I never use a towel in a PR just nice disposible ones in a tray no one wants to dry their hands on someting everyone else used.I like the touch of wood with the mirror I would proably use the nickel for the light too to make choices simpler maybe a wood tray for the towels in the same color wood

If the hardware is similar in color and finish but not exactly matching, it will be perfectly fine. Hang a towel bar or ring on the right side wall for a couple of hand towels unless you intend to have a tray of one-use paper hand wipes on the counter. I agree with Patricia Colwell that a powder room is an excellent place for wallpaper. I also prefer the one-use hand towels.

Hardware, light, and faucet, in this case, should be the same to make a more cohesive statement. That wood on the mirror is not working for this room. Too gold don't you think?

I think the bulbs in the fixture are too cool. Make your wall and counter appear pinkish which I'm sure is not your intent.

@BeverlyFLADeziner The mirror is mango wood. Doesn’t appear gold at all in person-feels ”warm”. Should I switch to a brushed nickel light fixture, faucets, knobs, and maybe a black round mirror instead?

@BeverlyFLADeziner I originally planned on oil-rubbed bronze all around to go with the warmth of the mirror, but the overall consensus on here seemed like I should go with satin nickel. I hate this stuff. Designing is so not my thing! I can pick out what I don’t like, but never what I do like for a space. Thanks so much for your help!

@BeverlyFLADeziner The larger mirror looks so much better! I will definitely order one that fits the space better. I guess I was also leaning toward satin nickel because I didn’t think a dark finish (bronze) TP holder would look good. Might stand out too much? I don’t want a TP stand. Would prefer to have one on the wall.

Brushed nickel is probably the better option for this bathroom~

The brushed nickel will not show up as well against the white walls as the darker metal

Here is the satin nickel. It's your bathroom and you can purchase anything you like

I personally, this looks a bit bland. But that's just my opinion.

And select a single lever faucet to go with your selection If there are 3 holes in the counter already then use the cover plate as shown below.

Light has rubbed off rust-brown edges? and with shiplap [idk much about it except what photos I see] which seems new and old-fashioned, maybe bronze faucet, and there are some not so dark... will you show the floor? :)

Small simple room [?] so how about just 2 surfaces: ORB and wood, with t.p. holder in wood?

If all else, even canvas art, has simple lines, maybe this transitional type. Nice. 111...but I guess you don't want too much variation of shiplap's white and this and that...

The crisp white drum shade of this flush mount light gets an eye-catching rustic touch with a band of walnut wood at the bottom. •Type of bulbs: E •Wattage per bulb: 60 •Metal, zinc and glass •Dimensions: W 18" x H 8"

More info: My walls are painted SW Sea Salt (more on the green side than this sample shows—definitely not as blue):

w/ white shiplap behind the vanity. See pic above for floor tile. I did order a bigger mirror as suggested—28” round w/black trim. Thanks again!!

@everdebz Here’s the floor, although a terrible picture of the coloring. I guess I’d describe it as grey with beige undertones.

Yes, and looks alot like basic 6 x 24" I bought at Lowe's [or HD]. If you don't like black that's ok too... might seem harsh with soft paint color...?

I like brushed nickel as it looks fresher and much easier to keep clean. Towel ring and TP holder should follow suit. I really don't like the round mirror, it should be rectangular or square for a more cohesive look. Round looks odd with all the strait lines of the room. You said you were selling this property soon. I always find it odd that people fix things up just before moving instead of doing it earlier so they can enjoy their space.

Go zingy with wall color! Some will look especially good with the dark metals. An apt I rented one time had a very small 1/2 bath and they painted it a great coral orange! Last apartment I had I painted the bathroom walls a sort of lime green. We don't spend that much time there so you can really go wild without getting tired of it. I think when folks are looking at fun wall colors they aren't looking as much at whether you faucet matches your mirror...

@judygilpin Darn it! I already ordered the round mirror. Maybe I’ll use it somewhere else because I see what you mean about the lines vs round. It is weird to finally get into fixing up my townhouse after so long. Just got lazy and comfortable with how things were and now I’m realizing how much I need to do to prepare for the eventuality of selling/moving. Won’t really be happening that soon- just want to start getting ready. Taking care of littles, not having money, just starting out, establishing my teaching career, other priorities...Now I’m 42 and finally feeling like a grown up who deserves a put-together house with slightly-better-than IKEA furniture. haha (I’ll always love Ikea.)

If you will be selling soon, then I would match the hardware to one idea and keep the walls neutral. Your goal now is to make it sellable. Strong colors are not a good idea. In today’s market, and a realtor will tell you to go with white or ivory everywhere so pick a soft color for the powder room as well.

@Lynn G Zingy colors for the next house! That one will be all me and I won’t have to worry about selling/moving any time soon. It’s strange- we are a family who listens to punk and is generally non-traditional, but I can’t bring myself to make risky design choices that really reflect “us”. I’ll push myself to work on that in the next house for sure. Wallpaper on the ceiling! For now, clean, simple designs that will appeal to homebuyers in the not-too-distant future. Thanks for the inspiration!

My five cents ………….. I'd go with the oil rubbed bronze to match your light fixture and cabinet knobs. It really warms up the space.

PS I like the round mirror. If it's crooked you won't ever know, whereas with a square/rectangular mirror against the lines of the wall, even if it's a teeny bit off, it will stick out.

@Material Girl Slipcovers True— It would drive me crazy to stare at a crooked mirror while I’m on the toilet. I like how the round mirror kind of softens up all the other hard lines in the room.

@RedRyder That was my thought as well. Simple is best for now.

If you have hard water where you live, the oil rubbed bronze faucet will have white mineral build up on it. A constant maintenance issue. If you're going to sell soon I would use brushed nickel faucet, towel bar, toilet paper holder and knobs. I'd also change out your outlet and switch plate to white. The decorative plates draw too much attention to them. I like them to disappear.

I would change out your light fixture to a silver one of some sort. The room is so small you want to make it feel bigger than it is. The round mirror can be your fun item. Maybe find one a bit more decorative with some color but not too busy. Something like this:

    https://www.ballarddesigns.com/cassidy-mirror/decor-more/mirrors/wall-mirrors/362728?listIndex=4&uniqueId=362728

This mirror would look great with your shiplap. I'd use the taupe one. It would look great with your floor and your countertop. Then your artwork will "pop" as it should.

And of course this is just my opinion. Good Luck! :)

I have huge rectangular mirrors in both of my bathrooms and NEVER has either one gotten crooked. But to each his own.

I personally like the oil rubbed bronze. Keep it consistent. And the darker metal pops against the white. I think brushed nickel looks a bit bland.

I‘m also interested in how to mix metal finishes. There seems to be many options and opinions which makes it harder. No mater what you do someone will say you did it wrong.
