I need help with that weird kitchen Island

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello Houzzers,

I just moved to a new place and I want to improve (I cook a lot) the kitchen island... I did not like the island (the shape and style of course) when I bought the place, but it didn't stop me...

Does anybody have any idea how I should position the island? The more I look, the less I see...

Here few infos :

-The actual island is 3' deep and 72'' wide.

-The dishwasher and sink are located in the island

- I want to put white counters.

-The pictures below are from the previous owner (do not look at the colors/furniture. FYI, I will during the holidays wrap all the cabinets (white on top and black at the bottom), removed glass cabinet doors, remove all these handles, I will eventually change the ceramic and all my appliances are stainless steel.

Thanks in advance for all your tips!

:)

Iza

I think you need to slow down. Live in the home for at least 6 months to a year before making drastic changes. The overall layout could use some improvement, and changing that island isn't going to be easy with those floors.

The fix for this involves redoing a whole lot more of the house than just the kitchen. It’s the angles. And all the angles create clearance issues, and wasted space. Some of those are support structure to the home. Which means a not very inexpensive project.

Live with it a year, see how it flows. Start research on finding the right architect to make over the home. Also research costs for remodeling. Here’s an industry source for that. https://www.remodeling.hw.net/cost-vs-value/2019/

Save your money. There’s terribly nothing wrong with that kitchen as is other than the fridge placement. It’s great looking. If you touch it, you’ll be into gutting it and starting over. And moving half the house around. Big bucks remodel. So don’t touch it.

You have a lot of unused counter space on the fridge wall. Since there is water on that wall for the powder room, I would suggest (someday, when you are ready to remodel) switching the fridge and pantry, and putting the clean-up zone on the perimeter. The island can then be devoted to prep. I squared it up in the following layout, but I think it would work as it exists.

FWIW, I agree with the other posters--your kitchen is very nice.

Corner kitchens are very nice, but you can't fight with it. See these examples below. You have plenty of room to create one of these larger island configurations.

A dead end in a kitchen like the layout above is never a good idea

@Beverely, Respectfully, my DF would strongly disagree. However, since you are the "PRO," I will delete my comment.

What great ideas! I'm jealous of your big space. My ideas are similar to Ms. Goose above. I don't prefer angles, points in kitchens. I'm a retired CKD.

While you're considering what to do in the space, turn your dining table so it is straight with the walls, and you don't have another angle happening in the space. It makes the kitchen seem even more awkward.

oh! it is already done for the table... These pictures are from the previous owner. All these fixtures are gone and yellow paint as well...
