Trying to add a 2nd floor extension above foyer

We have a bit of a smaller house, and I feel like creating another room above the foyer would create a lot more space for us. I have seen people ask about the 2nd floor extension before, but I have not seen anyone really get it done. It seems very doable, the only problem I think we would have is that there is a window right above our front door which is where we would want the extension to be. We also do not want this extra room to be closed off, it would be an open area with railing.

The ceiling would hopefully be where the red lines are, and then we would put railing on the side without the wall. Our plans are to turn this little area into my dad's office, which is currently taking up some space in our living room, and we plan on putting a projector pointed at the opposite wall. Any feedback will really help, I'm trying to figure some of this out without my dad's help. Thank you.

If you are serious about the project, talk to a local contractor.

How would you get into the space? A ladder? :)

A lot more pictures and floor plans are needed to get any reasonable opinions.

From that single shot, it looks like your proposed floor level is too low. If it should be done at all, then I'm guessing it should probably be the same height as the ceiling in the stairwell opening.

Over half the space is unusable due to the roofline intrusion. It would have to be much larger than it appears to be able to justify the expense to have this done.

I agree with The Cook's Kitchen, your depiction of the floor line is way too low and at least half the space will be unuseable because of the roof line.

I disagree with this being unusable space; a desk in the low space could make it useable.

Of course this is just guessing/judging by photo.

The difficulty is the removal of front window ( will involve reworking the exterior) and access to the space. Is that the second floor opposite the front wall?

Do not have an open railing - you will see the clutter. A solid drywall knee wall would be better.
