Honey Oak Kitchen - desperate help needed with layout/design! Thanks!!

In a nutshell: We have a three year old in our family and we cook a lot!

Here's what our kitchen looks like now:

For the new kitchen, we're thinking slab cabinet faces in creamy white, with an accent island in dark navy blue. Countertops in our plan are a medium gray quartz. The backsplash we're still undecided on. We have a small size walk-in pantry so storage space isn't a huge consideration.

As for layout, here is what we have in mind:

Here are the things that we are willing to do if it will help the design:

- Restain the wood floor.

- Paint base trims/door casing (we'd prefer to keep the wooden window trim/casing as-is to save money).

Must-haves:

- 36" cooktop surface

- Mid-century Modern/Scandinavian styles

- Island seating

We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Why does there need to be a new kitchen? Spending 40-80K on that isn’t going to make the spaghetti cook any faster. The layout isn’t awful, and the cabinets aren’t either. The new layout has much less counter space, and less useful counter space where you need it. It’s not an improvement.

Cut the peninsula down, remove some uppers, or have the center panels removed for glass. New counters, backsplash, and lighting, would make for a big transformation, and all together probably under 20K for everything.

I just commented on your other thread and it appears to have disappeared. In case it doesn't return, I'll repeat: I'd skip the seat on the short side of the island, and put three seats on the back. That would allow you to move the DW over, off-set the sink from the cooktop, and give you more prep space where you need it.

Adding another tall pantry, or a drop zone, between the garage door and wall oven would allow the oven door to open into the long aisle, and give you access to two landing spaces--the perimeter counter or the island.

I would place the refrigerator to the right of the cooktop so that it is closer to the dining table. That will also give you a nice triangle with your sink and cooktop. From the left on the other wall I would place the pantry cabinet, ovens and then countertop so that you have landing space to the right of the ovens. I think that the island will provide better flow throughout the kitchen. Before you forgo all of your uppers on the cooktop wall, just be certain that you inventory everything you plan to store and make sure that you have enough space for everything.

Overall, a good design with only a couple areas of concern. I’m not sure that having the ovens in the corner is ideal. I think Mama Goose is onto something there. Also, in real world usage, items on the open shelves near the cooktop will tend to get sticky. If those items are frequently used dishes that are washed often, then it’s probably not an issue. That said, I love modern design and picking that blue color palette from the accent wall for the island would be cool.

To mama goose_gw zn6OH, thank you so much for making a drawing, you are so kind. I forgot to mention that there is a mudroom before going out to the garage. There's a tall pantry right next to the oven which we could take it out and make it a drop zone. We usually only have one person cooking in the kitchen (husband and I can't get along in the kitchen lol).

To wilson853, this is a clever suggestion, thank you so much. We decided to against the open shelves due to the some cons, we'll use wall cabinets instead. Do you think seating in a prep zone would cause some problems?

To Nailhed66_projects, thank you for the reminder. We changed our minds after realizing how hard it would be to keep up.

To Kristin Petro Interiors, Inc. Nice tips and beautiful work, this is a great inspiration for us! Thank you so much for posting this, I feel like we have hope. Did you keep the base trim an oak color as well? Love the slab door fronts!

Thank you! Yes, the baseboards are also oak.

I am wondering if you have moved forward with your kitchen remodel? I am interested in seeing what you decided to do. I have the same issue re: big wall of windows by dining table - all trimmed out with stained oak. The oak trim around my windows is substantial - a lot of stained oak. If you have moved along with the project, I‘m extremely interested in seeing photos if you wouldn’t mind sharing. Thanks!
