Help for ugly home exterior!

Any ideas how to give this house more curb appeal? Can't do much with landscaping, maybe planter boxes. Will remove any unnecessary wires and try to move drain pipe. Open to paint colors, new garage door, window box, trim out window? Any and all ideas welcome! Thanks!

This house doesn't fit into any style, which means you can give it style by changing the exterior light fixtures, and the metal gate at the top of the stairs. Enhance the windows and other trim with darker paint. How about these colors: Silence for the walls, Classy for trim, and Green Balsam for the front door.

You can do something similar with the garage doors, but you don't want to make them the focal point. Keep the exposed wires close to the pipe. Paint them and the pipe to match the house color. They will still be visible but they won't grab attention.

You can add some landscaping with a planter against the concrete wall on the left and another between the garage door and the stairs. Get the largest size you can afford as smaller planters dry out quicker. And, heavy planters are less likely to be stolen. Galvanized containers from farm supply stores make very large rectangular planters (at least 2'x4'x2' deep) after you put drainage holes in the bottom. Add 25-50% coco peat (coir) to whatever soil you use to enhance watering properties. Choose plants for your climate that do well in full sun and heat. Nonetheless, expect to water regularly the first year and during drought after that. The amount of irrigation needed depends on how much rain you get.

I don't see ugly at all:)

I do see that the garage door and maybe the front door don't go with your modern style home.

Consider changing out those doors to something more modern. Consider also color blocking the exterior paint. Here are a couple of inspiration pics for you below

I think that paint will be your best friend, and would like to see some renderings of more modern color schemes. Is there any way to remove the arched gable? I’m sure that would be expensive, but would definitely update the facade. Good luck with your project.

For a unifying look, I'd do the garage door to match the gate on the other side. Hopefully, if the gate is your neighbor's, they won't change it any time soon. Remove the CLF on top of the left wall; it is the one exterior item that lowers property values most. It looks like someone tried to use fun colors on the trim and doors. Is that happening elsewhere in the neighborhood? Are you in a location that has any cultural influences? Here's a fun idea for your stairs and the wall where the CLF is, if you can get by with a bit of Mediterranean style.

Any chance you can eliminate the half round element at the roofline?

I like this funky house. I think the arched gable thing makes this house different than all the rest. Yes indeed paint is your best friend. The tiled stairs idea is gorgeous, but might be something you need to save for. What about two big pots with small trees or shrubs in them. Whatever would work best for your climate. It would break up all the hardness of entrance. Get the best garage door you can afford. Money well spent

Celerygirl you nailed it. I love your look. Now it needs some pops of green with plants. What do you think homeowner?

Very nice job. I like it when the garage door and front door coordinate on this home. The last pic is especially nice IMO. I hope the OP chimes in with her thoughts.

Mindshift, I like those colors! Good idea about the plants as I don’t think there is any water spigot in front.

LT Dub, Love love love that style of house! I hadn’t thought about white for the field color, but it could look good with black trim and wood garage door.

Denita, Thanks, I put ugly in the heading because I thought that would make people open the thread! Maybe I should call it ascetically challenged. Color blocking is an interesting idea. I love the middle photo.

Flopsycat1, Paint is really the most important design element since there is no landscaping. I will check on removing the gable. I honestly never noticed it until I posted the photo! I’m really warming up to the white after seeing that second photo you posted.

decoenthusiast, I do love the look of a wood garage door. I tried to figure out what CLF is, but failed. Is it the wires?

The house is in San Francisco, but the neighborhood does not reflect any ethnicity unfortunately. I will definitely add tiles to the front of the stairs, what a fun look for a boring entrance! Thanks!

BeverlyFLADeziner, I’ll check on getting the half round thingy removed. It does look odd. The house is at the end of a cul-de-sac so you really don’t notice it as you drive up, but now that I see it, I’d like it gone. The charcoal could be nice. I wonder if putting shingles on the boxed part would look good, and then painting the right side charcoal as well. I like how the garage door recedes with this look.

Rachann61, The gable does look line a little eyebrow on the window. If I get a wood garage door I’ll get wood planters made to match.

Celerygirl, I love it! Very modern! I could use charcoal colored tile for the front of the steps to tie in. You are a wiz at photoshop and always have great ideas for people. I wonder if instead of the tan color, would white look good? Thanks for the additional renderings. Unfortunately the front door is to the left of the stairs so does not show from the front of the house. But I will try and match the front door to the garage door because obviously you do see it coming into the house.

Thanks everyone for their ideas, it gives me a lot to think about and a direction to go in. And, to add more confusion, the interior of the house has some fancy moldings and a carved wood fireplace mantle. I hate to remove anything original, so will have to really balance interior to exterior. Wish me luck!

You can see where some have a tan window trim and some A black window trim

My immediate thought when I looked at it was #1: San Francisco, and #2: White paint, black window trim, wood garage door, planter on either side of the garage door each with a tall evergreen. I think this could give it a slightly classical Mediterranean 1920's look which I've seen a lot of in older part of the Bay Area. I wonder if it would be a nice segue into the interior.

Santa Cruz house - I realize the red roof adds a lot here. I don't know that I would color block your window area. Instead I would paint it white as well but the window trim a dark blackish. I like how there is iron detail on the garage door and windows on either side. These are nice areas to add elements of design that tie the look together. You can also carry that look over into the style of planters you add.

I love the color scheme of this Berkeley house with the tan-ish walls and deep blue window frames and wood color for your garage door. I would paint the moon above the window the same color as the facade and the trim of the moon the same color as the body of it so it doesn't stick out so much. Look at how much landscaping softens things. To the left of the garage door I would add a planter box with an attached trellis grid on which to grow jasmine, which flourishes in SF.

I'm with Denita. It might need dressing up a bit but it's not an ugly house to begin with. It has lots of potential! Also, I am enthralled by decoenthusiaste's idea for the exterior stair!

Not knowing what’s inside, I wonder if continuing the upstairs bump out across the remaining wall so it doesn’t end at such an awkward point over the garage would help. Adding a second, small window will add balance, too. While extending that space, you can either remove the arch above or extend, change and emphasize it to make more of an architectural statement. I’m glad you plan to get rid of excess wires (will you bury them?) and change or paint out the downspout. The tiles on the stairs will commit you to a certain style, so be sure you want to go that direction before you go to that expense. Landscaping, planters, lighting and house numbers are great ways to add punch without huge expense. Removing the metal door at the top of the stairs takes away a distracting element. Paint your garage door, and possibly front door for now, live with it and decide how much more you want to do. Good luck!

Moving or changing wiring is a job for a professional, plus your local town/city power department will be the office to contact before touching anything. They will have requirements and regulations, and you probably will require a building permit. Is the arch over the bump-out removable?
Do try to move the drainpipe if the roof is built with another drainage point.
Painting the garage door to match the body of the house will help a lot. New landscaping may entail a large planter to the right of the garage door since the front area is all concrete. If you don’t need that much concrete, you (preferably a professional) could cut out a section and install some plants or good quality artificial turf.

Once you paint it, consider adding an arbor below the bay window. Find some good climbing vines that will be Jain a pot in your climate (jasmine, wisteria, etc). Then train it to cover.

Remove that tree too close to house

I would change out the windows and doors and remove the wires.
Also you should repaint everything and make a pretty garden right next to the house.

Also you should make the doors wood match the gate beside the house.

Another vote for the wood garage door and front door. otherwise i would get some bright color like a blue that really pops!
