Need help updating 1960s blue tile in master bath.

We are keeping the blue "accent shower" as we call it in order to preserve the character and hopefully charm. We will be replacing the shower door( most likely frameless and see thru), vanity. floor, fixtures, and paint. For the floor we are thinking white ceramic tile with dark grey veining, 12 by 24 as shown in one of the pictures My first dilemma is choosing a vanity. I love the look of a med. brown vanity with the floor, but can also see white for that clean, timeless look. Then there is grey ( afraid of picking the wrong grey due to the odd blue/green color) maybe a navy or other blue . So many beautiful choices! My first instinct is the safe simple white, but don't want to miss out on a better look all while keeping resale in mind. Any help on vanity / paint choices or other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Our house is a colonial with a traditional/ cotttagey/ family antiques look with mixture of dark/light /painted woods. Thank you so much!

I love the vanity you have. I sure wouldnt be changing that. Actually, I like your whole bathroom except for paint. I would repaint the walls, and leave the rest of it. I am not fond of the navy blue with your shower tile. I would go with either white and accessories to match the shower tile, or a very light shade of aqua to go with the shower tile, and then use white accessories. I do like the floor tile, but, I also think what you already have works well too.

We like our vanity also, but it is on its last leg literally. we had multiple plumbing issues awhile back and it has never been the same. we are trying to replace before it falls apart. Since we are doing our hall bath, this is a good time. Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't realize how bad the paint looked until I looked at the pictures.

this picture gives the best representation of the true tile color.

I agree with CP about the marble look tile for your bath. It will only highlight the ‘mismatch’ of keeping the existing shower (which is fine). Even a plain hex or octagon floor would seem more cohesive with the era and will give you an updated look. I’d say white vanity and then paint a soft grayish barely there blue wall. Counter for your vanity will be the next issue but really best to pick the floor first so you know what jives overall.

Are you also considering the decor choices of the mirror and towels? i see a lot of dark in here, and if you're switching out the vanity, it's an opportunity to go lighter. I love the blue tile and cpartist's recommendation on the flooring. It'll look so cute and vintage!

Also, I’d remove the valance in order to bring in more light and find a small area rug that ties in the blues and whites. Good luck!

yes, definitely changing out mirror, towels, valence rugs etc

I have the toilet, sink and tub that match the tile if you want them.

Thank you CP and others for your suggestions. My hubby has been trying to talk me into a more vintage type floor . I was hoping the marble look would add a lux factor , but I def. see your point. My hubby wanted to use black and white hex. mosaic in our bath but I was saving that for the hall bath. what do you think about doing the black and white in our bath or should I stay with white in our bath?

What color were you planning on painting the walls? White is always a safe and timeless option. Plus, I always like white and blue bathrooms. I think it gives a very clean and fresh look.

If you are set on removing your tile that you have now (I wouldnt), then, choose something that looks vintage. I dont think black and white hex would look so good in there. All white hex would be vintage looking, and should look ok. However, I will tell you that white grout is a PITA to keep clean. I have it in a vintage bathroom. Maybe you can find a dresser that would look similar to the vanity you have now, rather than a newer more modern type that wont go as well in your bathroom. What you have is vintage. What you pick to go in that vintage bathroom, shouldnt be something that doesnt look like it belongs in there.

Lots of good advice above. I would just add that it looks like the shower needs to be regrouted while you're in there.

Thank you for taking the time to make suggestions! We are looking at plain white in vintage patterns for the floor. Thank you for saving me.

A quick Google image search for white and blue hex tile comes up with some interesting ideas for patterns. And pale grey grout with them. You could probably find a blue close to the shower color if you wanted to do a patterned floor.

(ETA I grew up with that bath tile. And the blue toilet, tub, and top-mounted sink in the formica-topped vanity that went with it. Even the walls, TP holder, and towel bars were part of it. 50 years later the house sold with the same bath still intact.)

Agree with your husband on this one. The "marble look" ceramic doesn't work. Consider a mosaic, hex, basketweave...many options, and perhaps a border/ accent to tie it in.

No not a basketweave and absolutely not black and white. All white? YES.

    Blue and white? Sure.

Go to www.heritagetile.com for authentic mosaic floor tile. I did do black and white hex in my black and white bathroom with a daisy pattern but the daisy pattern is more from the 1900's to the 1940's. It would not work with a 60's bathroom.

My mother had a bathroom with the exact same color and style of tile. She put in a penny round in white and it looked fabulous.

We are replacing the tile due to cracking and other issues. Updating both our bathrooms for resale in foreseeable future (empty nesters). Our hallway bath will be black and white basket weave on the floor and white subway in tub area. Very excited about this as our first house in 1988 had the original black and white and we have always loved that look. We had no idea it was "in" until we went tile shopping and of course Pinterest ha .
We found these two hex patterns. The one on the left is standard hex. The one on the right is marble ( I assume it's real ??) The second one is clearly a nicer and thicker tile, but what about the marble? Is this the best of both worlds or still not right to go with the blue vintage tile? I am not crazy about the size of the tiles. Would go with penny tile as suggested by CP, but no go for hubby.

This is the ONLY vanity my husband and I can agree on ( in our price range) . I am torn between the chocolate or white. we have cherry 4 poster style bed in our bedroom so more of he same , but I liked how it works with the blue. See inspiration picture. I guess white would feel more open and airy and could be warmed up with pretty mirror and assessories. Just not sure I can pull it off. would use simple white top . most likely quartz from Lowe's or H. Depot.

    Inspiration for dark vanity.

You are wasting your time and money if you're planning on selling in the near future. Real life is not what they show on HGTV. You will not make your money back.

Replace the vanity since it's falling apart and call it a day.

my preference is white hex on the left. marble looks too dirty/busy. If it were me I'd keep it simple so the blue tile and warm chocolate vanity were there stars, then white counter too match white floor. Paint the walls get rid of the beige/yellow. Someone else might have a suggestion. I'm not that great at that online.

I agree, the white hex not the marble. Its too busy for your bathroom. I do like the chocolate colored vanity, better than I would white. A solid white countertop would also look great.

Thank you ! I will go with the chocolate vanity/ white top and the regular hex. I can't wait to get those beige walls painted.

Just to give you an idea of what marble hex and white looks like, here’s a retro blue tile bathroom I remodeled. It’s light and bright for the low cost of this refresh. I agree with your choice of white hex or penny rounds if you’ve chosen the chocolate vanity

Thank you. Your bathroom turned out very pretty!
