Help on choosing the right rug size and furniture layout

last modified: 5 years ago

1--I am so confused with what rug size to get. The living room is 12'x18' in an open floor plan.

The picture I attached shows a 8'x10' rug in the living room, it feels a bit weird because the length of the sofa is taking out most of the rug. So now I am also considering a 9'x12' rug but I fear that that would be too big.

Thoughts? Should I get a bigger rug? Or stick to 8'x10' and get a smaller sofa/chaise?

2--Speaking of sofas, do you think a sectional/chaise is appropriate for the living room size? I've always wanted one :) Part of me thinks a regular sofa fits more, i hope I am wrong :p

Apologies as I only have a rough sketch of the living room plan. The house is not built yet but I also attached photos of the house floor plan and what the living room will look like when built.

3--Also open to your suggestions/ideas on different furniture layouts

Thank you in advance for reading through my VERY long post.

So you plan on floating the sectional in the middle of the room? no other furniture ? placement seems very odd to me.

That’s my initial plan bec I thought an approximately 18’ distance between a 65” tv and sofa would be too much.
But I can consider moving it all the way back to the wall behind it.

    Any thoughts/ideas? Open to suggestions.

It seems well proportioned to me. What other seating will you be adding to the space?

Are you planning to have at least one end table by the sofa? A 9'x12' area rug will be a better and more flexible size allowing you to add some additional seating or tables. The 8'x 10' looks a bit too small, especially if you want to add some chairs to the seating area. A comfortable and functional living room or family room should seat at least 6 -8 people. As to your concern about the sectional, is yes, a regular sofa will be easier to work with in this space.

@Ephross Designs - I could add an end table, i just need to find the right size so it would not get in the way between the kitchen island and the living room.

For the 9x12 rug, i tried to add it in the sketch horizontally, is it okay if the edge of the rug is not leaving any space against the sliding door? If i move it a little to the left, it will get in the pathway.

But too small when placed vertically.

    I wish there is a 10x12 rug :)

@groveraxle - Thanks for the suggestion, here is a sketch, please don't mind the color choices :p My only concern is the rug being too close to the sliding door the right. However, if i move it to the left it will get in the pathway between the kitchen island and the living room.

@katinparadise maybe an accent chair or two

Usually I like rugs parallel to the sofa, but in this case, I think your scheme with the 9 x 12 rug vertically and the chair flanking the media cabinet works well. You can also look for odd size rugs; sometimes a rug classified as 8 x 10 is actually 8'6" x 10'4" or some other odd size.

I would never jam a rug up next to a wall or door. Always leave at least a bit of floor showing.

You can turn the rug lengthwise, It is best to have at least 12 " - 18" away from the wall, and I can see your concern about the patio door. A 9 x 12 would give you an extra foot of room for an end table and with a 7 foot sofa ( which would give you enough room for an end table) and with two chairs you would have more seating than with the one sectional. Or, use a sofa table in back of a longer sofa and have a longer coffee table for easy access from the sofa. ( 2/3 the length of the sofa). You can have a rug made from carpet that would be the exact size that you are looking or find a handmade rug online or in a store than is closer to the size you need. Handmade rugs are rarely exactly 8' x 10' or 9' x 12'. Your sofa does seem too far away from the 65"TV as shown, a larger TV may be better for comfortable viewing. What is your plan for lighting? You can place one or two table lamps on the sofa table for reading light. Also, I would suggest swivel chairs for TV viewing. How many people you do want to seat in the space?

@groveraxle I’m with you on putting the rug vertically to leave enough space between rug and the wall. Just hard to visualize when it’s all on paper. Can’t wait to get everything done so i can physically start laying out furniture, rugs, etc. Thanks for your inputs.

@EPHROSS DESIGNS I might just have to let go of my secrional dreams then 😁 Unless i find a 7ft one. I totally agree that there should at least be 1’ rug on both sides of the sofa.
I am noting your suggestions on the console table and coffee table. I am pretty sure those will come in handy.
4-6 seating is what i’m going for, is that too little? This will be our first house so im totally clueless.
And my husband will be more than happy to get a 75” tv 😊
I am thinking of getting 10x14 rug if my husband can’t let go of his sectional dreams lol.
    Appreciate all your help!

Happy to help, a 9 x 12 will be best. Think about how you use your current family room. Do you have friends over for movie night or games? If you can seat at least 5, preferably 6 you will be happier with the space. You can have 2 swivel chairs, one on each side of the sofa. You also have seating at the kitchen island and if you have not purchased those stools yet, look for swivel stools so TV viewing is comfortable from there. The placement on your plan for a 9 x 12 is a bit off...I would center it on the back wall though I realize you may have a piece of furniture on the wall in back of the sofa which is not on your current plan. All the best to you, I am sure that the room will look great.... and I am sure that your husband would love a bigger TV :p

PS: Since your room is not very large, do not use large scale furniture and make some templates from newspaper or a brown paper roll from the Hardware store in the size of the furnishings you are considering to make sure that you will be happy with the layout and have enough room for the pieces you like. It will make it easier for you to visualize the space, and the furniture placement.

That may work....though you would not be able to swivel the two chairs as they would bump into each other and I think that they need a small table between them. The third chair would be too close to the TV... Try it with a paper template and see how it works in the space.

    All the best!

@groveraxle thanks for sketching it out

I agree with @EPHROSS DESIGNS the chairs are too close and would bump into each other
