Negotiating your home decor can be a real challenge, even when you both have great taste. The question is, who has better taste - you or your partner?

Neither really. We have differently bad taste. My husband is currently arguing to install a 3D printed dragon battle scene on our fireplace surround. I want ease of care and comfort over any aesthetics.

LOL according to him or me??!?!

^LOL, yes...according to WHOM? I voted for me having better taste, but I'm not sure that's completely fair since we're just different. My taste is more simple/traditional and his can be just be gaudy IMO. He also is fairly clueless about things like spacing, sizing and color (ai-yi-yi, the color issue!). He's a good sport, though, and pretty much just lets me do my thing. :-)

Why would Houzz be encouraging anyone to dis their partner? This seems like a particularly inappropriate poll.

We both have very similar tastes. He just doesn’t have the ability to see the big picture so often I’ll mention I want to do something and he doesn’t think it will look good, until I just go ahead and do it and then he loves it. Basically the wife is always right! Lol

DH just cannot focus on any design details; he doesn't care, he has no opinion one way or the other and it's not his thing. But when it's done he says it all looks beautiful.

I told my husband we have the same taste.

I think taste is a matter of opinion. Who can say whose is really "better"?

My husband and I have very similar taste. There are areas where I have the better grasp of an issue and areas where he has. We complement one another well.

I am a designer my hubby is an IT guy all he wants is a nice house so basically it' s my taste which I hope is good. The only thing we have to agree on is art , we both need to love it or we don’t get it.

It depends- he like the Italian type of furniture for example Hubby bought decorative types sofas etc.. I prefer casual, comfortable but sturdy furniture ( as well does most of us) but he usually gets his own way.

However, I do everything else and keep the home homey at least and try to make the slippy seats on chairs more comfy lol. Thus, to his/her own taste I would say.

My husband has good taste when he actually cares about something, most of the time he is very laid back and goes with what I like, which suits me fine lol!

    Poop

Hubby and I have similar tastes. I show and ask before making a big furniture purchase.

This is hilarious, especially given how skewed toward voting for ourselves, lol! I mean, most people are going to prefer their own taste.

How do you see the results? They never show up for me. I also have no idea how to start a poll, or else I would start one to ask how many people can see results of polls.

I live with my brother, who is an artist, and I am a designer. I would say we have equally good taste and also very similar taste.

    I don’t think we’ve ever disagreed on a single design/decor/etc decision.

We were long-distance (NY — TX) for 18 months and in the beginning, shared pictures of our homes. Our furniture was similar, decor/style was similar ... it was so funny. I love shopping and picking things out with him, we have so much fun. We both enjoy it all. He has suggestions, I have suggestions, it’s a very equal and easy process.

    So: Both of us.

    Abby Mac, lol! 😂

Lars, I made a poll about it. I can never see the results, either.

Jinx, I can now see the results, but only via the Houzz portal and not via Gardenweb.

Thanks for starting that pool for me!

I would always ask my husband about a design choice, but never like liked his answer!!

The mister and I have an arrangement - he got the fancy, new, giant tv he wanted- and I get to make the decisions on furniture, home decor/design/paint/etc color palette, and pretty much all the space in our master bedroom walk in closet (He doesn't have a lot of clothes and at least now he has more drawers that are part of the closet shelving system, when he only had one in our 10 drawer dresser before we moved from a 984sq ft lofted two level townhouse in SoCal to a 1700 3bed/3bath home in Nebraska).

It works for us. :P I don't pester him with "Do you like this sofa? What about this one? What do you think of this color for bedding/bath towel set?" kinds of things, and we don't have to sit 2-3 feet from the tv with the volume turned up far too high when he/we want to watch something. ;)

Really it's not about who has better taste, it's just that I have more particular tastes and he values my being happy more than having a say on what color the sofa is, what style is is, or any of the other decisions regarding stuff that falls into the home goods/decor/design category.

We both have similar taste, but he rather I do the decorating. He doesn't like shopping. Comfort and function comes before style for us. We both don't like following the latest trends. We like a casual home where our family and our guests can kick back and relax.

We both like the same things. We both have good taste. Being an Art major in college gives me an advantage but I find he has equally good taste which is a relief! I don't think I'd be as happy if we argued over purchases and decor. It'd be just plain annoying!

Let's just hope wives, husbands and partners of voters and posters don't frequent Houzz, LOL!

    I divorced all of them.

Answer is easy for me - it’s me I don’t have one. XD

    Aww she's cute!

    🤎

I would be gaudy without him. He would be boring without me.

We're both pretty great and agree a lot. He's less interested overall and is better at helping decide between A and B than doing the initial research and planning.

    I’m going back

I think we both have excellent, and reasonably similar taste.
More importantly, though, only one of us has very strong feelings about this design stuff.
    (Spoiler alert: it’s me)

where's the "i dont have partner yet" button? 😂😭😂😭

My partner has no taste, period. His standard line is"I don't know or care-whatever you want." He'd be happy with the Minnesota Vikings and THE Ohio State Buckeyes colors everywhere. Who wants gold and purple and red and white in every room?

My Husband has no Taste I’m Sorry I struggle myself that’s why I Love the Houzz App lol and Pinterest. But let’s face it I always panic at that moment when I’m still looking at both Apps and my design style has swayed between shabby farmhouse to modern contemporary to whatever looks nice !!! So I have to say it’s a loss loss situation. Why is it after the fact your like why did I waste all that time looking to just panic and go with something he says is fine when I ask his opinion when he says we have to make a decision today the contractor needs it ASAP lol

My husband and I made a deal a long time ago, inside mine outside his. I cringe every time I go outside but at least the inside looks great

I have more knowledge and eye for better quality. He has much better instinct regarding styling and creating displays.

my husband couldnt care less how anything looks as long as its clean and works. So, all of our improvements inside and out are my ideas and with my money (I am the breadwinner and its my house not our house as far as the bank is concerned, so maybe thats as it should be). And he just goes with the flow. So thats nice, I get what I want pretty much every time. He has only objected to one thing, which I honored.

    I definitely do.

Haha - I don’t ‘allow’ the mister to go on Houzz (lol) so no danger of whose taste is better (IMO) and any arrangements that the household might (definitely) happen to have - being revealed. He’s not really the Houzz/decor/home design site kind of person anyway, which is why things work as well as they do in this sort of situation. I don’t go on his ’’sportsball’/manly stuff sites, and he’s got precious little interest in going on my Houzz/makeup stuff/social stuff sites. It works out well, and life runs as smoothly as one could ever hope when two people who have their different interests and hobbies make a commitment ‘before God, friends and family‘ to forsake all others. ;) You don’t need to do everything together and like everything the other likes, just need to do and like *enough* of such things to not want to burn the place to the ground and constantly backhand the other person when they do something that annoys the h3ll out of you. A fine line to walk, certainly, but doable. ;) A spouse/partner is someone you choose to love, while kids (both the two and four/non-legged, scaly or feathery variety?) are always loved - you can’t help but do it nor choose it when it’s your ’kids’, you just *do*. Kids also don‘t get to make decor choices for the household though, most of the time they just want comfy and personalized, everything else is ‘whatever’. This, from the daughter who went into her room at night for months on end, and painstakingly used a wet rag, her hands and fingernails, to slowly peel the pink flowers on a white background wallpaper OFF the walls without damaging the drywall underneath. It had been up for about 10 years by then and I knew if I asked my mom if I could take it down and just paint, she‘d say no and tell me I had to wait for something or other, and I didn’t want to (being an impulsive 19 year old at the time, one who did first and asked questions later...)...But at least I successfully removed an entire 12’x14’ room‘s worth of wallpaper (I think there was maybe only one full foot of vertical space and a few 4-6” scraps at different spots along the top parts of the wall that I couldn’t reach?) without damaging the wall surface underneath before my mom even knew what I had been doing in my room for months and months. Plus my labor was free. ;) It took her 10 months to have ’discovered’ the tattoo I had said I hadn‘t gotten, but by that point it was a *wee* bit late to do anything about it. She and my dad are likely just glad I didn’t decide to do something completely unhinged (set fire to a gov’t building? Help ‘free’ dangerous medical lab test animals in protest of tuition hikes?) or get arrested. A tattoo in a place that can easily be covered by regular clothing is nowhere near the worst thing a teenager can do - even if it is going to be there permanently. ;)

I of course voted that I have better taste (but then again my wife hardly ever reads my Houzz posts (OW! I didn't realize she was standing behind me). Actually our tastes are very similar (clean traditional). Where we differ is in my ability to visualize a finished look before we even start (hence my business name, Creative Visual Concepts). Over the years she has accepted that what I visualize is usually close to what she was thinking. I've had to do color boards and mock ups for her to help he see the final effect.
