Color of wood for accent wall

last modified: 5 years ago

We are trying to warmup our living room space with a wood accent wall. All the house has light oak trim and cabinets. We were going for a contrast type of look. Planned to take the boards all the way up the wall and install darker mantle. We have a lot of dark furniture in the house to help tie it all together. Is this wood too dark against the light oak cabinetry? The wall was painted dark just to have a background for any cracks between wood. Second pic is of adjoining kitchen and to show flooring. Thoughts are appreciated.

i like the wood but could you also do it behind the open areas of the cabinets on that wall? I don't care for the orange color in the kitchen anything on the horizon there? it seems like you could move toward cooler tones there.

I think the dark wood really fights the lighter existing elements, and the tones are not complementary. Do you really want to add more dark tones? I'd be working to lighten the look, starting with the paint color on the kitchen walls.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to accomplish. Based on what I see in your photos, the space is already dark and has too many contrasting elements. The two different paint colors, the floor, the backsplash, the counters and the cabinets all have different color tones. I can't see how adding another strong element with a different tone will help pull the space together.

If you want the oak tones to recede, you need to work with them, not try to overpower them.

I have no idea how you think this warms your space. It clashes with the all other wood and IMO all the dark walls would not seem warm to me . Maybe start by changing wall color and changing your lighting or adding some. I don’t actually see the room you are working on so that is all I can offer.

    Not a Pro.

Your just adding more wood to a multi wood room.

If this was my place I would just put up a big beautiful piece of art that incorporates all the wood tones and some vibrant colors.

I wouldn’t do it. The different tones of wood are going to clash.

I don't think the wood is too dark, but I'm not sure how this works to enhance your space. The painted wall gives a very good idea of what the dark wood will look like and it just... it doesn't really seem to do much for the space except add more dark brown.

What you're room is missing is color that isn't a neutral. You seem to mostly have shades of brown and tan, and the floor isn't a harmonious tone with the cabinetry (in the photos at least) so if your heart is set on a wood accent wall maybe something with both the floor and oak cabinet tones would be better for tying together your existing elements.

Is there a color that you like that isn't brown or tan? Seems like your space could use some color.

How brave are you? To make the space look more alive you need color, not more neutrals.

I see the reds in your carpet and kitchen and things. The wall color in the kitchen doesn't quite commit to red and is a bit off with the cabinets.

I would change the color of the walls in the kitchen and this wall to a deep red like your carpet.

not tied to wood just looking to make space more “homey”. Not interested in painting existing wood. Trying to work with what we have.

How about a decent pic of the existing fireplace wall to start with? Then we can offer suggestions.

The room was "warm" before you started to change everything. You've got 3 different wood colors and none of them really compliment each other. You have cool toned tile fighting with the warm oak in the kitchen and now the living room.

You're already half-way through the fireplace change and I suspect you realize it's a mistake or you wouldn't be here asking about it.

I think if you changed the kitchen wall color, repaint the fireplace wall and found a rug and accessories that tie the cool and warm tones together, the room will look more warm and cozy to you. Right now you have a bunch of disparate elements that are fighting each other and the space just looks off-kilter.

For example, here is your room with a rug that combines the orangey tones of the oak and your gray choices. It helps the room look more peaceful and cozy.

Kitchens for instance have hard surfaces everywhere, and I like fabric around, to soften. So your amount of wood doesn't seem comfy to me. I'd paint a neutral and place canvas art over mantel.

k, here's just one I saw that might have a fun-swirly vibe of your rug -- and who know might look good on the new bronze-charcoal paint --

As was said... the wood amount has a somber effect - I think casual whimsy that's also pretty might be nice. :)

Your post started with mention of things tying well together - would you like my opinion that relates to kitchen and not the fp wall... ?

You have orange tone wood cabinets trim work and grey tone floors. The current kitchen accent wall and just general wall colors look disassociated and not doing anything for your home You really need to find a neutral paint to bring cohesiveness to the whole open concept You are seeing so many colors that were not planned out to complement each other so u are looking for something to bring it together but a dark wood wall focal point is not gonna work.

Everdebz yes pls! Here’s a few more pics. Maybe it doesn’t show in pics but the floor has brown and grey tones and matches woodwork and cabinetry very well. At this point we are thinking of paining fireplace wall back to original color and do a darker wood mantle with legs with pic art above.

Also adding that the fireplace wall was painted dark only to prep for installation of the wood. It was a light neutral before.

I'm not a pro as you can see. Questions: is there a description of what kitchen's paint means in the big picture?

    Does LR have chandelier?

Any chance you've experimented placing blankets other greys over the sofa? to replace and bring greys of kitchen/ accent wall around the area, and tie together?... not saying that would work, but I'm curious. [I can see it looks nice.]

I'll keep on even if you're away: I'd like a photoshop of another kitchen paint, and what it would look like if grey backsplash didn't abut with paint color -- I don't think a grey paint would work -- but Idk that current paint works.... ?

I wouldn't do that 'stik-wood' at all (or laminate,,,whatever it is! doesn't work w/all your other elements). I like the wall dark, and I'd paint the bookshelves next to it white like your french doors. I think that would give you plenty of contrast

    much better.

btw, if you want reclaimed wood, then go get real, reclaimed wood.

When both rooms are open, we have to consider all colors/surfaces, makes sense. Your grey surfaces don't 'show well' with competing cabs/floors. I read that you aren't buying new - but I have to do this and suggest a silver/grey --I can't find it perfect, but we can see ideas [like pewter finish of chairs] - probably over a round rug.
