Suspended lights for high, vaulted ceilings

Our dining are has a high, vaulted ceiling and is in desperate need of over table lighting. The ceiling is ~16ft at the table and has a sloped ceiling. the combination of needing a large fixture, with looooong extensions and a sloped ceiling mount is proving difficult.
I am wondering if:

  1. a standard fixture that is suspended from a canopy with cables and a long wire can be modified by an electrician to provide additional hanging length?
  2. are there specific sites and/or combination of keywords that will help me find what I need?
  3. are there other work-around or resources that i haven't considered? (I'm in Canada)

I've included a few pictures of things that have caught my fancy but won't work as is for one reason or another.
For scale reference, the door in the picture is 14ft wide, and the ceilung at that wall is also 14ft high and slopes up to 18ft at the peak.

And of course, budget is a factor. I'd like to keep it as far below $2k as possible

A chain with long wire can be added by the electrician to many fixtures. First you ask your electrician what the installation will cost. Subtract it from your $2000, and you have your budget for the fixture itself.

Thank you! I figured that should be possible but I wasn't sure.

I guess that would take care of the slope mount as well since the chain can swivel. good to know!

I have a similar situation and opted to take advantage of an existing power supply in the ceiling to install a track. We purchased the pendants we liked and rewired them to a track mount with a much longer wire and also added a few small track lights. It vastly improved our lighting situation.

We actually have plenty of overhead lighting (recessed lights in the high ceiling) but mood lighting for dining is all or nothing.

We decided on a fixture and the electrician is coming by today to take a look and with do the install on Wednesday.
Question: how high off the floor should it be hung? I'm thinking about 7ft to the underside, does that sound about right?

7' to the underside might be high compared to your table. General guidelines from online:

Hang a chandelier approximately 30 to 34 inches over a table with an 8 foot ceiling height. If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, mount the chandelier an additional 3 inches higher for each foot of ceiling.

I'm a big fan of the balloon trick, which I learned on GardenWeb (pre-Houzz) and have used many times over tables, counters, and in the middle of my bedroom. I posted a picture and description here, scroll down near the end of the post. It's helpful to test out the hanging height before you pay an electrician and any wires are cut.

Here's a pic with some guidelines:

    Interesting.
    So the table is 28" and we have an "extra" 8ft of ceiling height, so 24" higher .... 28 + 24 + 30 = 82 min, 88 max.
Looks like my gut feeling of 7ft was pretty close. I guess we will start from there and see how it looks.

Terra - you're right! 7ft sounded so high to me for above a table, but your calculations make sense. Definitely try a mockup and see what you think.
