You should center the chest on the wall.

Our front door is at the other end of the hall, and the chest is centered in the hallway looking from the door. I know it looks odd, but the only time you see the wider part on the left is when you get to the end. Hope that makes sense.

Love the chest. The lighting is what makes the biggest difference in your pics. W/o the visual of the view from the door--all I can say is same as Sammy.

Center it please, and the art.. The brain knows there's a "rest of it" : ) The dog is too large, a lamp would be better, he is a floor accent near a hearth. Take down the wall candle shelf, remove the candle sticks too. A pretty bowl, the lamp.......done

Not sure about the dog but I do think the cats are too big for the table. They need more room to spawl. And I'm not too crazy about the little shelf.

The little shelf needs to go I don’t see a dog so can’t comment on that I think candle sticks are not needed and I like the gold bowl. I would need to see this from the front door to comment on placement. To me this is like a piece of art and it should be seen as a whole from that vantage point.

Remove the candlesticks, and remove the wall shelf that is all by its lonesome. Center the chest on the wall. It is making me shift in my chair just seeing how off-center it is in the photo.

I would find another place for the cat sculptures; they are too large for the amount of surface area of that chest. Most of all, since it is at the end of a long hall, I'd put a small table lamp there, roundish or squat in shape, placed on the right or left side of the chest top, so there would be light "at the end of the tunnel" so to speak (hoping there is an outlet on that wall; if there isn't, there should be). Then perhaps a small dish or bowl (not the gold one), in ceramic or porcelain, white or light-colored background, very decorative, with the small table lamp, and the framed art above. That's it.

If you center the chest, is it going to make it too narrow when you turn left at that point? In other words, are you going to kick your right toes on the chest?

I'd center the chest and artwork on the wall, and remove everything but the cats, which I would place slightly to the left on the chest (so that their "visual weight" is more under the arc of the branch in the artwork). As is, I think there's too much going on and the gold sconce is superfluous.

If the chest cannot be centered on the wall, then I'd remove it completely. It does look like it might be impeding traffic flow.

I was responding earlier to the chest decor and placement, but the couple of comments here about whether the chest impedes traffic made me think that could be the case. If it is the case, you could remove the chest entirely (and that little shelf on the upper-left). If you then feel that wall is naked, install a shallow shelf centered on that wall, at about waist height or a few inches higher, glass would be nice and light. Simple, no ornate corbels or doo dads. Do not over-decorate the shelf. Just a couple small things, perhaps a framed photo, and the framed art above. Also, there is nothing wrong with a wall that has nothing in front of it. Sometimes people think every surface needs to have something done to it. Decor looks better when there is space for the eye to rest. You could just have the framed art on that wall, nothing else, done.

Your cats deserve a space of their own. Less is more.

Remove the cats, if you want one candle stick higher add a couple of book and place one candle stick on top of books. A nice lamp would be nice.

You have some pretty things to work with. Could you take a shot from the front door?

Out of the 3 arrangements, I like the 3rd one best.

Yes to what @olychick said, with a longer console there at the end of the hall, that could be centered on the wall with your painting centered above it, and only one or two items on the top. I also am wondering if a runner would help ground the space of the long hallway...?

Yes, I have been thinking about that. Not sure what color would work. I like Oriental carpets, but don't want anything too busy. (I think the one you are showing looks a little too busy/colorful for me.) Here are a few I've looked at. What do you think of them?

@dianabythelocks I think the rugs you are showing above appear equally as patterned, they are just lighter. I tend to like a darker rug for a runner because it is usually in a heavy traffic pattern area. Without knowing the rest of your home design and/or colors it's hard to pick one. I was also thinking that the darker one pulls the color from your chest, and doesn't fade into the tile.

Dawn, thank you for those suggestions of rugs. I've looked at the 2nd one before, and have considered a dark rug. The reason I was looking at paler rugs was because I wasn't sure I wanted to draw attention so much as just have a runner for softness (the tile floor is very hard). Another consideration I was thinking was I might hang some art in the hallway, which would be the primary feature. I am very undecided. :-(

With your wall-washer lighting already installed, I think you'll get more bang for your buck by making a gallery wall down the hall. Then hang the focal piece, your favorite, at the end of the hall to unify the gallery, but nothing else (no chest or accessories.) Then look for a long, narrow runner to add color/texture/softness to the walkway.

Thank you decoenthusiaste. I have a lot of saved photos of picture arranging, so I will collect my current art collection and see what I can group together. Are there any rules to follow, like all oils, all watercolors, etc.? Thanks!

If you have enough of one theme or style or medium, that could work. Or just go with what you love. I think what looks nice about the one above is that they are all the same size and the bottoms of the frames are at the same level. The ones below, due to differing sizes, seem to all be centered at about 5' above the floor.

Center the chest, go with the 3rd option and leave the wall art where they are. The chest does not need to be centered on the walk way.

Like the center pic w/candles on left and smaller dish by candlesticks.

You could put a tall then basket and/or metal umbrella stand to the left of the cabinet beneath the wall hung shelf.
