I think dining room color scheme won't work with adjoining living room

Moving on to the dining room, wallpaper is down, room has been painted, furniture has been placed, had an idea for artwork and curtains in the room. However, now I feel I need to rethink my color scheme because of the existing colors in the adjoining living room. The dining room would be all cool blues and greens and the living room has a red sofa and is all warm caramel and cream. So I need to either warm up the ding room colors or figure out a way to add blues and green in the living room. I am just not that good at this. On top of that dilemma, a last minute decision and size miscalculation is now leaving us with not enough room for the buffet/server piece that is needed for extra storage or room for an area rug. I can use the server in another room (living room) but due to placement of doorways and the fourth "wall" being a massive opening into living room, I am stumped as to how to add needed storage to the room.

Original inspiration piece for dining room: Rick Reinert.- Southern Oaks from Ballard - love this SO much

Original choice for window treatment in dining room were these Courtney Spa Drapery Panels (also from Ballard Designs). Need to find something else though. Thinking I might be able to use window treatments and artwork with colors that would tie the two rooms together.

Love the colors in Julia Purinton's Water Lillies II

Terrible glare from existing light fixture that needs to be replaced (any ideas welcome). Paint color is an SW match for Behr Back to Nature. It's an exact match but the current lighting makes it look kind of yellow and washed out in the pictures below. This picture is a better representation of the actual color

Is that the new dining room set and Buffet? Green , red and blue can all work together. The caramel is your odd man out. We really need to see photos of the adjoining rooms to help you pull them all together. Is this the art work you have?

Right there where the big opening is in the last two pictures. New sofa? Eventually maybe, but not in the budget right now, but open to suggestions. The walls in the living room are Sherwin Willams Caramelo - recently painted - dagnabit - so they need to stay for a while....ideas?

Here are some pictures of the living room adjacent to the dining room. I think I can put the server where this little sofa table is now. Trying to work some blues in. The rug is no longer in this room - so maybe a different one could work some blues and greens in?

Design Interior South I don't have the artwork yet - these were the inspiration pieces - I do have something similar though.

Need to see pics of other room. Also, what would you like to store in the dining room and what are the room measurements and the table size? My belief is that you can make this work but yeah, plan first.

You've got to bring in the right tones of blue. The turquoise pillow in your chair isnt the one. Also look very carefully at your favorite piece of art work from Ballards and you will see there is a slight amount of red in it. The caramel walls are your biggest challenge, not the red sofa. Ideally you would have done them a blue or a neutral white tone. They really fight your new dining color as well as the existing pieces in your home. Think medium to navy blue blue tones. Change out your art in the the space. Think lighter and brighter in all the colors you want. Greens, blues and reds.

hollybar The dining room is not very big - see measurements below . The room is 13'4 by 10'6 but doorways cut it up in a funny way. Design Interior South sigh - yes, planning would have been great it's the same old story, once one thing gets done, everything else looks shabby and needs to be updated. What started as a "simple" kitchen update (we changed the flooring on most of the first floor, and kitchen has new cabinets, counters and backsplash) turned into an ongoing "project". Was not planned that way but once kitchen was done, we had to paint, once the painter was hired, colors had to be chosen and some rooms were afterthoughts and "ok" choices were made without thought to what was going to happen next. I really wanted blues and greens and aquas ALL over the place but "settled" for more neutral, I thought, workable colors. BUT darned if I don't still want my blues, greens and aquas SOMEWHERE. Unfortunately, budget is now extremely thin and I have to "make do" with some of the choices and need to find workable solutions with minimal outlay of cash. We do have a TON of the green paint on hand (we painted our master bedroom the same color) , but re-painting the living room is not on the agenda.

hollybar The table is 42 inches wide and , as it is set up now, 60 inches long. This will work in the room most of the time., since it just mostly the two of us. The table has a butterfly extension that will increase the length to 78 inches when needed. We need to store larger serving pieces, table linens, glasses and bottles in the dining room. Also, need to set up a beverage center for wine/coffee/alcohol,as needed ,when we have company.

Can you paint yourselves to save some money? If not, I think no matter what art or draperies you bring in it will always be the color of the walls that are off.

i, too, am a lover of blues and greens and I even had a red picture once in my DR. But, my walls were cool pale blues and greens. A few red accessories tied it all in. But you have warm “caramel” walls.

I love your first inspiration art!

I think finding the right area rug with all the colors you want with just a touch of red to include your sofa would work in your room.

Bring the rooms together with an area rug that works to compliment both rooms.

@Itza Gonzalez, is this rug shown in the living room, back in the other room with the fireplace? What rug if any is now in the adjoining room to the dining area?

    Itza Gonzalez thanked Dawn Martinez

Dawn Martinez Yep - The rug is now in the family room (the room with the fireplace), it's not in the living room anymore. ArchitecturalDetails . THANK YOU!! That was a HUGE help! The ceiling is white, the lighting is funny in there. Are you suggesting that the dining room wall above the chair rail be painted in another color?

@Itza Gonzalez, so is there a rug in the living room now. And yes I think that is exactly what @Useris suggesting, white above the chair rail, along with white on the ceiling. What do you think?

    Itza Gonzalez thanked Dawn Martinez

Dawn Martinez there is wall to wall carpet in the living room. ArchitecturalDetails . all the ceilings have been painted with Sherwin Williams Ceiling White paint. If I use whit or off white above the chair rails, that still does not help me tie the dining room into the living room - and I agree the room has too much black because of the furnishings, but I was planning on adding a runner, centerpiece etc. to break it up along with changing the cushions on the chairs and bench. Was hoping that artwork and other wall decor and accessories, like the floating shelves and plate racks shown) . Like this idea for the odd corner by the kitchen doorways. Perhaps I can do it in white, instead of dark wood?

    would break up the green.

Design Interior South perhaps, I can use the artwork from Ballard Design over the sofa, and use the colors from the art work in the living room? The curtains might work with the current wall color in there as well? Maybe?

celerygirl you are right - it does look too busy in your mock up - which is pretty close to how it would look in my dining room, except I wouldn't use that runner. I need ideas for different artwork and widow treatments - back to the drawing board for me ...

BeverlyFLADeziner thanks for the comparison, I do prefer the all green mock-up. However, the remaining dilemma though is how do I bring some of the green into the living room without it looking like an afterthought. I need to tie the two rooms together. Should I use a similar painting from the same artist in the living room and maybe add green accents (pillows, lamps) and an area rug OR do I just need to start over with different art and window treatments in the dining room?? The area rug shown in the living room photos has been moved back into the family room. The server will need to come out of the dining room (the dining room is too narrow). I will replace the narrow console table in the living room (under the two pictures) with the item shown in the last photo, and use it as a wine bar or something.

IMO the gold walls must go. You can always add soft green accents to your room successfully.

@Itza Gonzalez, is it in your budget to paint the living room a color matching the family room or even a lighter shade of the color in your dining room, the gold wall color is making it hard for you to create a flow between the two rooms.

    Itza Gonzalez thanked Dawn Martinez

Dawn Martinez yes I know and I can't repaint. I am not saying it won't ever be done, but it won't be anytime soon. I know that it seems like such a simple solution and that I am going through a lot of trouble that new paint can solve, BUT it took us FOREVER to pick colors that worked with the lighting in the rooms, FOREVER to convince my husband to paint the entire home, FOREVER to get the painters in to do the job AND we can't just do it ourselves - my husband is disabled and there is no way that he is going to let ME pick up a paint brush - because, well, he is who he is. For another thing, the color chosen for the rest of the house looks like dookie in that living room - just muddy and gross AND the reason we don't re-paint the dining room is because when we ordered the paint the painter told us we needed FIVE gallons to paint the dining room and the upstairs bedroom but we didn't so we still have about THREE gallons left. I know it can be done - if a colorway exists in fabric it can be done - this fabric has colors that work in both rooms - not the look I'm going for right now, but a solution must be out there.

@Itza Gonzalez, yes I hear you. It does seem like there should be a solution. And thank you for sharing the details again about the painting, sorry if I had forgotten. So is there a rug at all in that room now, meaning the living room. I do think I remember you saying the rug in the photo went back to the family room, correct? Perhaps with a rug, with a bit of green and then adding green accents as Beverly suggests; we can tie the two rooms together.

Dawn Martinez yes - it seems that the area rug might be the key - the artwork, lamps and side tables will be replaced, which was the plan for this room anyway seeing as everything in it is almost 30 years old and has been re-purposed from some other room. Thanks for the visuals! How do you do that? I like this one I just found here on Houzz but I always "seem" to like this bold stuff but when I see it in the room it just looks like meh... I feel so "style challenged". I'm going back into my prior posts to see what I'm drawn to.

@Itza Gonzalez, it's a fun rug, but I think the darker color is more rust or red, and your sofa is more of a berry color. If you like this style I can look for one similar for you and see if I can place one in your room for you.

The Oak art that you love has greens, blues, and golds. It would look really nice in your living room and bring the greens into that room. I think you can successfully use gold (main color) and green (accent) with the red (accent) sofa in the living area, and for the dining area use green (main color) with small amounts of gold (accent). Try using your gold framed prints from your living area in the dining room, and the two new tree pieces in the living area. I wouldn't use a rug in your dining area. You don't have enough space for the chairs to stay on the rug without having the rug cover the whole floor, and your floors look very nice. Just use more substantial drapes on a longer and heavier rod. Look for a simple print with green and camel/gold rather than blue.

calidesign thank you SO much for your advice, I will try the other pictures in the dining room and I plan on putting the sideboard in the living room where the narrow console table is now. Do you have any suggestions for draperies ? Do you suggest that I look for window treatments that can be used in both rooms. Also, was not planning on an area rug for the dining room, bur would like one in the living room - any ideas what would look best? You have had some great suggestions in the past. Dawn Martinez I think I need a lighter rug - in feel and color, have you come across anything else you think might work?

This one had been suggested in one of my prior post, it has the right colors and I like it - just not sure if it's right for the living room -

I don't think you need a rug in the living room, since you already have light carpet. I would focus on improving the seating area instead. Look for a round coffee table to use in front of the sofa, and pull the chairs closer into the grouping. Add two end tables and table lamps. I would use a medium to dark stained wood for the coffee table (so you have some contrast with your wall color) and maybe metal and glass end tables. You may be able to use your round mirror over the wood server you are moving into the space.

    Itza Gonzalez thanked calidesign

calidesign actually looking at round tables and was SERIOUSLY considering no area rug because I want to try locate some chairs with a red/gold/green pattern instead. Not sure about the window treatments still - want a print in the dining room but may have to go simple/solid in the living room.

If you use round end tables, use a rectangular or square coffee table. Printed drapes in the dining room are fine with solid drapes in the living area. For your chairs, I would stick to green/camel OR red/camel. You can keep your sofa as the one red item in the room and just use touches of red in art or accessories. Or get a cream or green slipcover for the sofa and just work with the green and camel colors.

@Itza Gonzalez I like the colors in the rug, what kind of condition is it in. As for the chairs they don't appear to go with your sofa color. Can you slip cover your sofa in a neutral color - like below, or lighter?

Dawn Martinez been thinking of getting rid of that sofa since I painted - hahaha - would LOVE a slip cover - have been looking for one like a sure fit with separate covers for the cushions but haven't found one yet - it may have to be custom.

I would skip the rug, and get those two armchairs. They are great colors with your carpet and the greens you want to incorporate. You may be able to use them with the sofa as is, or try the slip cover. Reds and greens are fine together. If you get the chairs, look for sofa pillows that have the same color light background, and just a touch of the green (maybe a stripe).
