To rug or not to rug... (rug under dining room table)

We just moved to a new home and got a new dining set. After setting it up we wondered whether we should have a rug under it or not. On one hand, the floors look great and we don't want to cover them up too much but on the other hand the set seems like its 'floating in space' a bit because the layout of the home doesn't really define separate spaces. One other consideration is that we have an area rug in the adjacent living room so if did have a rug it would have to coordinate and not encroach too much.

What do people think?

It's a personal preference. Some people don't find rugs practical under dining tables or, like you, don't want to cover up a cool looking floor.

If you decide to go with a rug, make sure you have enough room. It should extend at least 2' from the table edge in all directions and not impede walkways.

I really think it needs a rug to anchor and ground the space. Just make it one that is of a functional material for eating under.

I vote for a rug. Not only is there a lot of wood inside, with the floors and table/chair legs, but it continues on outside in view, too. I think a rug would provide a restful and soft break in all of the wood elements.

Thanks for all the advice! I think I am on the side of getting a rug. The more time I have spent looking at the room today has made it more obvious.

Thanks for the pictures Beth, super helpful! I am an extremely particular person, especially when it come to rugs haha (I spent 3 or 4 weeks constantly/obsessively searching for the one in our living room). It is nice to have a jumping off point. Let the search begin...

I have a black rectangular planter coming that I was planning on placing on the table and planting some low succulents in (picture). I thought that the table needed something black on it to pull in the light fixture more effectively. I was also planning on putting large plant in the corner. I'm not sure what type of art to put on the wall under the window. The window placement is...awkward. I wonder if a live/moss planting would work?

There will be more mini projects and questions that come up for this main area as we move through it. We have most of the major pieces but are missing a lot of the smaller elements to tie it all together.

love the planter idea. maybe even one w/a little wood trim would look nice

do a wood stand for the planter

for the art,,,window is a little low. what if you did 3-4 black and white prints and lined them under the window?

similar to this (but just one row)

    or like this, but smaller

    a collage

or, a single piece that fits those dimensions

We decided to rug. I think it looks really good but isn't quite practical yet, we need to get a 7 ft wide rug to leave enough space for pulling out chairs but we liked this one and it only came in a 6ft width.

I still have to properly set up the center planter.

Pay no attention to the sheets over the window, blinds are coming!

The next trouble area is the front entry...

Do you have 36-42" of walk room all around the table? If so, that's about how big the rug should be. You don't want the chairs to fall off the rug when they're pulled out for dining. Don't cover vents with it or allow it to run into baseboards.

I agree the space needs a rug to ground the area.

I would skip it unless you are going to get a WOW rug. Just be sure to use protectors on the chair legs so you don’t scratch up the wood
