Bungalow Exterior light over pair of french doors. Suggestions?

I’m having problems finding the right light to put over a pair of french doors for the back porch of my 1940 bungalow. (”porch” is a stretch. It will be about a 7’ wide by 5’ landing, leading to three steps and then down to the patio and backyard.

After searching through photos here, I realize most people either put sconces to the sides of the doors or have a covered back porch and mount a flushmount. Alas, neither will work.

I’m thinking I should go for a downlight. But I’d like it to look more craftsman than farmhouse barnlight. Are there (m)any options?

I bought this (link below) at my local lightning store. It’s cute and craftsman-ish but I think the scale is off (when I held it up, it looked a bit small. The pair of doors is 6’ wide on a wall that is 7’. This light is 11“ wide). Do you think it could work?

FWIW, I‘m planning to put a 15” bronze gooseneck downlight on the front and back of the 1 car garage (Vaxcel Dorado). They do make a matching 12” but I guess I wanted something more craftsman-like on the back porch (hence the hammered bronze). This patio will have another light: About 12’ away, on the side wall of the house, I’ll have a craftsman-like sconce. Exact fixture TBD, but I’ve been eying the Arroyo Craftsman fixtures. (Or anything that looks craftsman-like)

Thoughts? Suggestions??? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Here's the back of the house

Here's the side of that patio.( below) The plan is to put a flushmount centered between the two windows. To far left (below) is the garage.

For reference, here is the front of the house

Here's the light I'm considering for the front and back of the garage, a 15" Vaxcel Dorado in Bronze. (I think it's ok for the garage but wondered if I should/should have something different over the French doors. They make this same downlight in a 12" or 9" style).

For the decorative lights in the patio and back of house, I was thinking this Arroyo Craftsman in bronze. (this is 15". I may do 17" on the back wall, since the windows are so tall).

Sorry I can't post pics of those lights. I'm having technical problems at my end.

    Thanks for your help!

@suezbell The back deck/porch doesn't have a ceiling, just the eave. On the front, yes, we will do a flushmount under the arbor.

Consider choosing a smaller fixture that will visually disappear rather than seek attention and do so while providing plenty of light ... and while not collecting dead bugs.

Over time, you'll appreciate your choice more if you can change the bulb fairly especially if it is a relatively inexpensive old style screw in yellow anti-bug light bulb.

Hope you find the perfect fixture to meet your needs.

What you want is a light from Arroyo Craftsman. Go to Box Canyon and ask for Gary. He's got the best prices for Arroyo Craftsman lighting.

The fixture you linked to is not craftsman in any way, shape or form. :)

In the morning I can get a pic of my hanging light

@cpartist, thanks for the feedback. I agree, that barn light is not craftsman. I need a light on the front and back of the garage. It’s narrow with sheerwalls so I can only put something on top and my thought was that a downlight would be more functional. Are there downlights that look craftsman? I can’t find them (aside from one in my original post, but they are too small). I don’t know where I would put a hanging light. Thanks for your help.

There are "floodlights" that are intended to light the yard more than the front or back stoop. Consider how you will use the front and back and whether those might be worth considering. You might also consider whether some kind of solar lighting either instead of or in addition to standard electrical lighting might be worthwhile.

Look through the link I gave you. There are lots of choices that will work.

@cpartist are you suggesting that for over the french doors?

(Or the garage? I guess I thought functionally a down light with some projection, Iike the barn light, would provide more light).

Do you think that the top light (the hammered one) would work at all, stylewise? Unfortunately it’s small, 11” wide by a 6.5“ high. Seems a bit out of scale for a pair of french doors. But maybe not?

    thanks for your help.

Here are the fixtures I‘m considering next to the windows, the Berkeley on p. 19 probably the BB7WL (17” tall, vs the 14 3/4” tall of the BB7W).

I like those! If you’re stuck deciding on a size, try mocking it up with paper or cardboard. You could even print out the image from the catalog on an 11x17 printer. Good luck. I think it’ll look great!

@scottie mom and @cpartist, thanks for your feedback and encouragement. Great. So it’s decided! Those are the fixtures that will flank the big window on back and go on the side patio area, between the tall window and regular one. (Thanks for the tip on doing mockups. I got the 14 3/4” one from the store but maybe I’ll do mock ups of both so I can attach them to the house). FWIW they are both 9 3/4” deep by 7” wide.

I’m also considering putting a smaller version between the two windows on the “breezeway” (that area by the garage). I’d like an extra light there (I’ll have my potting bench there). So I’ll probably go w/ the the smallest one BBW6 (5 1/2” wide by 11 3/4” tall by 8” deep). It’s a narrow area (and about 15” from the garage) between those windows but I’d like something.

So my dilemma: what to place over the french doors? I had through downlight but can’t find anything that seems to be the right style and scale. This was the best I could find But it seems a bit too small.

Or do I choose another Arroyo Berkeley? I like the consistency but what size and how high to place it?

And what about the front and back of the garage? As I said, i thought the barnlight on the front/back of the garage could be acceptable, since it was functional.

Thanks for all your help! All these decisions—oy! Great to get some help. THANK YOU!
