Under the overhang doesn’t satisfy the code minimums for outlets, unless it’s a very short overhang.

House will be in Colorado, island overhang will be 12". The house I grew up in had the electrical strip under the peninsula, but that was an old house. There will be a prep sink (yippee!!!) in the island - does that change the option for a pop-up outlet?

NEC maximum for overhang size is 6", if memory serves, so you'll need to either put them in the countertop or elsewhere near the surface on a non-overhang side. Your electrician or KD should be able to help you determine how many total outlets you need and where to best place them.

We are painting them the color of our island, I don't see them as an eye sore unless it's a bright white outlet on a dark color island. Not a fan of pop up outlets, wouldn't put unnecessary holes in the stone.

We always put plugs under the over hang. There is a code you have to check. Sometimes we do a temp to pass inspection then using the final location as j box then switch out later. There are pop ups also or you can work work in something like i did here into the design.

You can place them under an overhang but most codes have a limit on how far back they can go. They don't want you to have to get on your hands and knees to plug something in. This usually only works if you have full width ends on your island. The outlet is then place on the inside of the panels about 4"-6" in from the front face. Pop-up receptacles are an option but they are expensive and need to be planned for as they also protrude down below the counter top and could interfere with say a drawer below. If the side is the only practical option there are many choices in colors to choose from, the electrician just needs to order them. Other options are to design the island with posts or a vertical blank area between or above the cabinets so outlets can be installed on the working front face.

I always plan my islands with a 3” filler at the end, I put my outlet there. Yes you are giving up 6” total cabinet space in the island but it keeps the end and surface clean and is readily accessible.

Just one other consideration on placement. Keep in mind that when receptacles are placed on the front working face you will have the appliance cord hanging down. This could make it awkward if you need to access the cabinet behind the cord or even worse would be to inadvertently get caught on the cord and drag the appliance off of the counter top.

There are also plateless receptacles from Bocci. And similar camouflage designs from Trufig. Both very pricey.

(I would suggest avoiding the tricks of switching out legal for illegal outlets after inspection; in case of insurance claims, your insurer may not be so easily fooled.)

I have no intentions to skirt the code, permanently or temporarily. I was just looking for creative ways to place the outlets in our 84" x 36" island that would look great from the side. Thanks for the links to the Bocci and TruFig. The TruFig is gorgeous, and exactly the type of solution I was looking for!

Mine are under the overhang.

Mine are on the top of the corner columns.

A lot of the pop up things will not pass with your local inspecor because they are devices (fancy extension cords) and not hard wired outlets. Check with you code guys before planning anything.

Check out Task Lighting- angled power strips... we've used them on the side under the overhand of an island and also placed them vertical on a ripped filler when a waterfall top was installed.

We have single outlets on either end of the island - circular. They have a plug cover - white with a white island. This is also circular. It looks like a decorative circle. Works great. Mostly we just plug in computers there so the plug cover is there most of the time. We do use it for the occ mixing bowel but all our day to day stuff is on the periphery. Haven't posted a pic in a long time. How easy!

I did a pop-up in an island once, where a side box would have messed with the drawers. but there was no sink, so I sort of imagined a computer plugged in there...

I like a narrow tray base cabinet, with the top “drawer” given over to an outlet space. The electrician installed the wrong colored outlet here, and that got changed out later. But it makes it easy to see!

We have a grey outlet on the side of our island... it’s not an exact color match, but it’s close. But having a towel bar on that side of my island was a must have feature I wanted in my kitchen, so I always have decorative hand towels that hide the outlet.

I did plug mold on the end.

What David shows is called a Sillite. Lots of pictures here if you search. I used one in my Island for code and stained the cover brown. I used another in a tight spot in my backsplash, and painted it creamy yellow to match my Rixi backsplash. They are wonderful. Good luck.

Receptacles without boxes may not be Code compliant.

The trouble with Plug Mold is that two or more kitchen appliances on one circuit can easily exceed the load and throw a breaker--or fuse, if anyone still has those.

As well, if the Plug Mold were installed in a new build, it might not pass for the same reason. Where I build, all counter receptacles must be on two separate circuits. So the typical four receptacles around the counters would require eight separate circuits.

For new builds, check with your electrical contractor before getting too creative!

In retrospect I guess the cover could have been silver or grey. But it’s not facing the room it’s on the side only the cook sees so meh

I use the 3” filler piece it works the outlet is the as close as possible in color to work with the cabinets and honestly you really don’t see it. Is AS had done the outlet in dark gray you would not even notice it

If you are considering a plug mold it would be advisable to check first with your electrician. Depending upon your region they may not be permitted. Here, there is a restriction that no more than two duplex receptacles can be placed on a kitchen circuit, this circuit must be 20amp and the receptacles must be T-slot and tamper proof. If near a sink then they also need to be GFCI protected, yes one can always use a GFCI breaker but these breakers are $100 or more versus a $15 GFCI receptacle, also if the breaker trips you have to go to the panel to reset it. If you are mounting the plug mold on an island face and your cabinetry is full overlay then you will need to add a horizontal blank face, this will raise the overall height of the island unless you want to pay extra to have all the lower cabinetry customized.

I'm really liking the look of some of the color-matched outlets and placement on the working side of the island. Again - so many great options that I hadn't known about, so again, thank you all!
