need help making new sectional work in this space

Hi! My new sectional was delivered today and now I’m not sure what needs to stay and what I need to replace. I know I need a new rug, not sure about curtains or where to put lighting and decorative pieces. Would love feedback. The sectional does need to stay.
Thanks in advance!

Here’s an up close color of the curtain and sofa in the daylight from the window

While I don’t mind the mix of cool and warm colors it seems like your paint color is adding another tone that is not helping this flow. The close up of the sectional and drape looks like a better match than the room view implies. Maybe find a rug with cools and warms and pull a paint color from that. Couch looks like a comfy spot for your family to be together!

What paint color would you recommend?
This color was just painted before we moved in. Not sure of the color. It changes with lighting but it usually reads light and neutral. What undertones do you see? I’d rather not paint right away if I don’t need to. I’d love suggestions on a rug and my husband wants a recliner we have yet to agree on one!

I like the sectional with the drapes. With the rug out and a blank slate, how about playing with the sectional placement-it seems too squished in the corner. How about pulling it closer to the door and a bit away from both walls. Maybe this would center it better on the fireplace too instead of the corner. Then get your rug. Pay particular attention to the right size and the color and pattern working with the sofa and drapes. Lastly, if needed, paint the walls. That is the easiest thing to change so do it last.

we have a sectional that is probably too large for our room from a design standpoint, but it works great for family and guests. To reduce stuff in the room, we have a few trays (w handles and a lip around them -- west elm sold them years ago) that can sit next to a person on the sectional and hold water, coffee, books, etc. I think we like them better than endtables!!!!!

Ok. I pulled it away from the walls a bit. Better? The table is back but only temporarily until we find something else

Thanks for the suggestion, Em Dash. We actually have one that sounds like what you described. I’ll definitely try it.

you have a lovely room and I especially like all the windows in it! heres a few ideas, knowing the sectional stays.

I agree that you should try moving the sectional out from the walls and moving it a bit closer to the door. that would center it a bit more to the fireplace.

I know you have the white cabinet there and if it doesnt have to stay, I would move that out and replace it with a low console to put your TV on. I would then move the console so it is not on an angle and instead on the wall with the fireplace. this will make that area less heavy feeling.

you then can play with some art above the TV and then add some art above the wood storage on the other side of the fireplace.

if you havent already started an idea book with inspiration photos that you love and that can help with the direction of the room.

I would add maybe a couple swivel barrel chairs with a round table between them facing into the room, similar to your drawing. If you add a recliner instead, it needs to be lighter feeling.

Starting to look great! I‘m not sure you need to paint or buy new drapes. On my monitor the colors work well together. But maybe that’s my monitor?

I think I would start searching craigslist and consignment shops for some smaller end tables. And maybe buy a leather ottoman to use instead of a cocktail table. Add your new area rug and you can pull a color from it to add a throw pillow or 3.

Much better to pull the sectional away from the wall. Get some narrow end tables, those existing ones are taking up a lot of room. Try removing the drapes entirely for a few days, unless you need to close them for privacy I don't think they are helping the room, having no drapes will open the space. Get you husband that one recliner, it will fit, but only one chair in the space, Finally, consider removing the TV cabinent and going with an open unit that will also perhaps take a larger TV. You can get by with a large sectional like that if you give the visual illusion of space (remove drapes, take out TV cabinent, replace end tables). And paint is cheap and easy, if you need to change color. You're trying! You'll get there.

the sectional looks so much better now pulled away from the wall. love it, what do you think? so, I did see your ideabook and love the ideas you have in there. you are on your way... based on your idea book, it looks like you want to go light and airy with a few pops of color. you also have a bit of a MCM flair too. so, that said, I would suggest a lighter colored, solid, with texture rug, maybe an ivory, more natural tone. leather chair would be great too, but make sure it's not bulky. definitely would remove the white cabinet for a lower console. I dont think u need to change the color of your wall, but if you do, I would suggest a warm white tone to keep it light and airy. heres a couple more inspiration pics. all very light colored walls, veryvopen feeling coffee table with metal legs with pops of color in either pillows or chair.

As I mentioned way up thread, I think adding items like rugs and pillows that combine the gray and tan will help your room look more cohesive.

Hang the TV over the fireplace. Get rid of that elephant cabinet in the corner. That will provide breathing room. Those TV cabinets are not really done any more because of exactly this reason - they are bulky and take up too much space, and today's TVs don't need them, and TVs last longer with air around them rather than being enclosed. It looks from the photo like an older TV, hard to tell. TVs have become very affordable. Head over to Costco and find one that will fit over your fireplace.

Much better pulled out from the wall. I agree on the tables and white cabinet - all too big with the sectional in the room.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions! I am planning to get rid of the “white elephant” cabinet, lol! I can’t hang it over the fireplace, we use the fireplace all winter. It’s gets too hot to hang a tv, I think? I do like the sofa pulled away from the wall.
I do need some sort of drape to pull shut or at least filter the sunlight in the late afternoon, which I love, but “is too bright” when my son is watching tv.

Steph P, thank you, I like the sectional too, but it’s been a bit stressful...We bought it at Boston Interiors.

I think the curtains look fine with the sectional.

Have you considered placing the sectional so that one side is facing the fireplace and the other the double window?

I was wondering the same as izeve, wondering how it would look turned that way. This way, everyone is facing the tv when watching.

Your neck would not be comfortable with the tv over the fireplace.

it definitely closes in the room. I like it the other way for sure. the other way also doesnt make the sectional look as big. I would hate sitting on the end where you walk in too.

Theresa, I really like your rug suggestions, but worry with 3 boys and a dog that a light rug will not look great for long. I like the second one the most because it has some pattern.

Should I replace the tv cabinet with a straight console (in line with the fireplace) or a corner tv console

got it about the light rug...boys and dog factor... As for a console, I personally like a straight console vs corner tv console. Corner ones seem dated to me for some reason.... oh, what do you think of sectional placement?

I really like the vintage lattice tassel (4th one). My last rug was 8x10. I was thinking of going a bit bigger 9x12. I prefer the sectional the first way. It really feels too closed in and less welcoming for some reason the other way.

Instead of thinking of it as closing the room, think of it as defining it. You can still see into the room. Push it in closer to the tv and consider a console table it or something. It is too far away for that small tv. The other way, half the people can’t see the tv. You have a large room and it can handle the sectional. But considering the room is a tv room, everyone should be able to see the tv, right?

I don't like the way the back looks in the new way. Maybe you can push it a bit into the room and put sofa table behind the sectional.

I agree larger size rug and move sectional back for sure

Can it go back to original position but be pulled out from the wall? Perhaps by a foot? There are some smaller profile recliners that might work.

I do think it is a bit large but it is still a pretty room. Sometimes comfort is as important as style.

I like the sofa and the color but I think the shape of the sofa is throwing off your setup. I would move the sofa down towards the door (unless you can't) and get rid of the end table near the fireplace and please give the old dog her bed back :(

Please give that sweet dog a big hug and love away that worried look! Maybe a treat, too. While you’re at it, get a nice cup of tea, sit down on your new sectional, and take a deep breath. You’ve been working hard, moving furniture! It’s all coming together.

    .

The new position is much better for watching TV in its current location. Is that important? I think it defines the room and makes it cosy.

I really do prefer the first position of the section. We do watch tv in this room but usually not all of us at the same time. We have a big screen in the “man cave” downstairs for that. Thanks again for everyone’s input. I really appreciate the help! I am looking for a new rug and console table for the tv. Hopefully I’ll find something to try out soon and will post some pics.

Curtains? I had navy and white in other rooms to try. Thoughts?

    I like the white

I like the white too. I picture this room to be light and airy and that's why I like the white, possibly a linen. you may need more than two panels per window to make them fuller and you might consider expanding the rod some so the fuller curtains will partially be on the outside of the window. another thought are shades instead of curtains. one of your pics in your idea book had a living room with shades, so I thought I would bring that up too.

Love the chocolate accent in the room....missing our Spencer.

I thought your other rug was fine, even the right size. although it could have been pulled further towards that far window.

agree that the chairs and the one glass side table are too much.

I don't mind the paint color. Did you want more of a color?

I also don't mind your current drapes. I know you have floor heaters, but can the drapes go lower?

The curtains can definitely go lower, we don’t even use those heater strips. I plan to replace the rug and can replace the curtains too so they will be longer as I’d rather not lower the curtain rods. I’d like to add color maybe with a rug or pillows/accessories.

yes. that's how you get color. Let me show you an example.

Look at this room and take away the rugs, Pillows, and throw. what do you have?

you have a wood floor and white furniture and white walls. that's it. see how much life those items add?

same for your room. Except I'd have to throw in a plant somewhere. every room needs some greenery.

here's a neutral room w/greenery and some prints and texture

this room takes a risk w/pastel blue/purples. see all the diff prints? they all work together because the color palette is the same.

I love this one. notice the window treatments, and tree. and every room needs a bit of leopard.

what do you think about the woven wood blinds and some white linen drapes? do you like that look?

I posted this room because of the rug. I love the soft blue tones w/the warm rust/orange tones. they'd look great w/your gray and your wood floors

    same thing w/this rug.

find a rug you love and then pull those colors onto the pillows/throws. bring in pattern/textures and don't forget a plant or two!

I love the linen look. I ordered some linen curtains yesterday! I also like the idea of an area rug with some blues and possible the rust color. I already added some plants. Thanks for sharing the images. Off to search for some rugs. Not sure if I should stay with the same size 8x10 or go up a size 9x12?

9 x 12-gotta balance the large sectional. It will look great when it all comes together!

I vote the dog bed stays in the room. Dogs love to be right by their people.

The dog bed was put back after I snapped the last pic! She is a well loved part of the family!

If your front door enters into the room I definitely prefer the sectional where all seats face the TV. It defines the room as a separate area from the entry and makes it seem like you have two spaces. Plus it is better for TV viewing from all areas. I also think it will make the windows on one wall be more visible and the drapes not so cut off. As it is with the original position you have one panel hidden behind the sofa and the other is shown full length and you see part of the window. The other window doesn't bother me as much as it is equally covered on both sides.
