Please help choose which large format tile to go with!

last modified: 5 years ago

Hey guys, we are refinishing our fireplace wall with large format tiles (polished porcelain "marble look") hung horizontally, ceiling to floor. The wall is 7x10. BUT there's also a small section of wall around the corner next to the window. Hubby and I are divided about if that portion of the wall should be tiled or not. Your thoughts?
The tv wall to the right has wood paneling with smoky grayish/brown undertones.
Which tile do you think would look best around the fireplace?
What would you recommend to finish the fireplace floor area with? (Tile or wood paneling?)
We also want to update the fireplace logs, glass enclosure, and trim, but that's another story.
Your thoughts, ideas and opinions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Jillian D.

I cannot see using either of those options. They will clash with the TV wall. I suggest carrying over the material from the TV wall like this:

Shown withcustom fireplace screen over existing fireplace using magnets.

BTW: That looks like a direct vent gas fireplace. If that is the case, you cannot change the logs. Can you post a closeup picture of the fireplace. It will be important to know what your options for logs and doors are before you begin the refacing. The example I created above may or may not work.

Thank you for sharing your advice and image! As much as I love the tile on the darker tile on the right, this was my reservation also, about the horizontal veins. Here's a closer picture of the fireplace. It also has an outer screen that I'd like to remove for better visibility. And yes it is direct vent gas.

jillian, instead of describing everything, post a pic of the fireplace, the tile, the wood paneling, and everything else you're questioning.

Pics make it so much easier than trying to imagine what you're talking about.

Hi Beth, thanks for commenting. This is my first time posting. I edited my post, but then it deleted my 6 pictures, so I posted in a duplicate post including the pictures. Sorry, I'm trying to get use to this app.

    I love that darker tile!

But,,,and big but here, you can't use it. Look at your tile floor and that tile wall!

is this tile??(on the wall) (also, that window looks like a jail window!! are those vertical blinds?)

I really like the last tile for the fireplace. But to use it, the other tile wall has to go. they, in no way, work together. even the other large tile doesn't work w/it.

And then you have that floor tile! What color/pattern is it? See that floor tile in the picture w/your dark tile picture? the whites/grays? that floor tile looks great w/the darker tile. that's what you need on your floor if you want to use that tile on the FP

All three of your tile choices together are Too much. IN fact, the floor and that accent wall tile/wood don't even go. You're trying to mix modern elements(tv console and fireplace design) w/ rustic,(wall tile) traditional (sofa/ceiling fan)

The wall is wood paneling. The tile floor is much lighter than pictured. And yes... sadly it does look like a jail window. But I don't know what to do with it! And there's only one! I love the darker tile too, but I do have the same reservations. The wood paneling wall was hubby's idea. I think it's too dark to take around the fireplace and too much wood paneling. I'd still prefer a tile look, but maybe without the linear design?

With what you have going on in the room I would choose the lighter tile. However, you're going to need to change out the floor tile as well to bring the room together.

for the window, just get a nice inset blind or shade. look around over at blinds.com. they make some great things.

any plans on changing out the floor in the future? you just can't put three completely different looking tiles that close to each other.

if hub wanted a wood wall, then why use floor tile that's supposed to look like wood?? why not use actual wood?

would have been cheaper too. is he willing to cover it? (yeah, I know)

But that wall he did actually is the boss in that room now. you'll just have to drywall the fireplace, get a wood (a real wood) mantle, and hang a piece of art over it.

    something like this,,ignore the tv

you know what could have looked cool,,doing a slat wood wall like this one

or like this on the fireplace

I didn't like the idea of the wood wall to begin with because of the rustic look. So to soften the look, and compromise, we went with the floor paneling for the color scheme. Can you see the concrete floor infront of the fireplace? It use to have a tiled bench there, that we tore out. That's why I was thinking putting hardwood in that small area infront of the fireplace would tie the look together and separate the tiles. Oh Brother.. back to the drawing board...

I will check out another window treatment. It really does look like a jail bar window now! I was also thinking of another way to balance out the window with something on the other side of the tv.

I also really like how the first picture has the wood boxed in. Maybe it wouldn't have taken over the room.

We changed the floor 5 years ago when we bought our home, so not likely anytime soon.

    Jillian,

What do you mean by "horizontal veins" in your comment: "As much as I love the tile on the darker tile on the right, this was my reservation also, about the horizontal veins."

In the mockup I created I suggested you use the exact same material on the fireplace wall as you did on the TV wall.

I will comment later on the DV fireplace when I have more time, but you cannot change the logs inside the unit unless the manufacturer of the fireplace offers a different log set. Usually they only have one or two options. Do you know the make and model number?

I was referring to the linear lines on the tiles. We first thought about taking the paneling around the fireplace but now we fill it may be too dark, especially with only one window. We were hoping to put something lighter and brighter on the fireplace. My husband wanted to go with a stack stone, but I didn't want something so rustic again. The fireplace has been there since the 90s. My husband doesn't want to change out the insert, so I was hoping to make small changes.

black would be nice on the wall, then perhaps the other tile would look better.

any of these would look great on your tv wall.

Or, do a black fireplace (either drywall painted black or a solid stone material)

and then do a real wood slat wall for the tv with a larger console.

so imagine black fireplace like this (forget tv here,,just black w/wood mantle)

and wood slat tv wall with a larger console...

Or, black wall w/walnut console and artwork

    wood media console.

this would also look good on the tv wall w/your dark stone tile you like

Jillian - how wide is your fireplace? Definitely go around the fireplace on the angled side. We did 5' long tile for our fireplace in this plant series which really comes out looking like concrete. I agree with Beth that you already have a lot going on and this may be an option only viable if you decide to remove the wall paneling, but I think both of your grey tile selections don't blend at all with the existing brown flooring you are not ready to replace.

    https://www.olympiatile.com/product/series/747/plant

Ours was grey, which I think will be too cool for you, but clay or white may work for you. We chose this tile in particular because we wanted the fewest grout lines possible. Our excellent tile contractor was able to miter the corners so no schluter was necessary. There may be other tiles that have less pattern but still available in this 5' format.

Hi Mnmamax3, thanks for sharing. My fireplace wall is 7 ft long, 10 ft high, (not including the wrap around corner). I really like the white and clay tile example that you offered. We were also wondering about the corner edges. I'm not sure how miter and schloting works yet, but I'm interested in finding out and sharing these options with my husband.

I’d continue the wall wood all the way to and on the fireplace wall, they use a mantel floating shelf that sorta matches the floor or the floating shelf under your tv this way break up the fireplace wall and match one or the either
