Kitchen: Ceramic Tile or Luxury Vinyl tile

I want to update the floor of my kitchen. I currently have a vinyl slab and it has stood the test of time. I want to update the look and I am drawn to the vinyl tile because it is softer on my feet than ceramic. I am going to live in this house for at least another 5 years if not more. I definitely don't want wood but am trying to decide between Ceramic tile and Vinyl tile.

Can we assume 'vinyl slab' means sheet vinyl?

Yes, sheet vinyl was taken out. Trying to decide between ceramic tile or luxury vinyl tile.

what's the budget? what's the kitchen look like?

you could do another sheet linoleum or marmoleum. they come in a huge array of colors and designs now.

Porcelain, or Ceramic tile also comes in a huge array of designs and colors.

DalTile large gray hexagon ceramic (or it could be porcelain) tile

for instance, this is 24x24 Porcelain

Had ceramic tile laid in hallway, laundry rm, kitchen and sunrm. as price for tile was a good deal and we have large playful dogs with big claws and we have dark hardwoods in rest of house which I did not want more of. I would not do it again. It is a hard surface for aging joints and "noisy" - sound carries. I like the look but pity the potenial new owner in ten yrs. who has to demo it when it is out of fashion.

@Beth budget isn’t an issue and the remodel is underway so really no way to take pictures. I am going to the flooring place tomorrow so will look at linoleum and marmoleum. Like hazelcraddock said I am not liking the feel of the tile, it’s hard on my feet!
Would you pick a sheet over the vinyl tile?

LVT isn't necessarily wood look, is it? We have some lovely large square tiles in the basement that everyone comments on. I'm pretty sure the salesperson called them luxury vinyl tile. The only place I like ceramic tile is in the bathroom.

NC, I would never pick vinyl at all. Linoleum or marmoleum, maybe, if the kitchen supported that period or vintage look. And again, sheet or tiles, depends on the look you want.

(you've given us no clue as to what your kitchen is going to look like)

Otherwise, I'd go w/ natural stone, porcelain or wood. Those large porcelain tiles I posted with very small grout lines, look beautiful in a new kitchen. Easy to clean too.

I mean, if you're standing in the kitchen for hours on end, get one of those cushy mats to stand on. Or, get some cushy slipper shoes to wear while you're cooking.

@daisychain LVT is the ‘tile’ LVP is the ‘plank’. I don’t want the vinyl wood look but rather it looks like tile

Is the LVP a floating floor? And if so how does it hold up to water spills?

"frankly I still think anything that is fake wood looks tacky. "

Pulleez. Just because it's LVT/LVP, or SPC, or WPC....does not mean it it trying to look like wood. Oy vey.

OP, look at the Supercore product - some of the new patterns are really nice (and are not intended to be "wood looks").

Also, CoreTEC has a new Coretec Stone product - I saw it this weekend and these look amazing in person.

Thanks, everyone for your thoughts. After visiting the flooring store I am planning tile instead of vinyl. @Beth, any thoughts on porcelain VS Ceramic?

We like glazed porcelain ... any pitfalls in the long run that I should be thinking about right now?

porcelain is usually colored through. ceramic, only glazed on top. (so if it chips you're going to see the clay base). A good Italian porcelain is worth the money.

@Chessie, Thanks! CoreTec is what I was looking at but have decided to go with tile :)

I would not use ceramic tile on floors. Cracks and chips. Porcelain is much stronger.

Nc, what style kitchen are you doing? if going w/a porcelain tile, and you have a large enough area, go w/the 24x24 or 30x30. 12x24 can look a little choppy, depending on the type of tile used.

    for instance, I love these
(first 5 are all from Tilebar. you can get 5 samples for $5)

oh, and this is a large porcelain tile that when laid looks like a wood inset design. it's porcelain and comes in many colors.

Before absolutely deciding on porcelain tile, you might want to read through this fairly recent thread where people are commenting on shoes that will help alleviate pain caused by standing on tile floors in the kitchen.

I was set on porcelain tile (even had the tile picked out), and then DH put up a fuss and wanted LVT for a softer floor. He felt more strongly than I did, we picked a pattern that is kind of trying to be stone but looks more like a subtly patterned marmoleum, and I love the final result.

@salex ha ha, I have the opposite situation! DH wanted tile, I was set on LVT, so took my daughter with me to the store. She’s neutral! We looked at both and chose the tile over the LVT.
@Beth I am going for a transitional style. I did price out the 12x24 tile but haven’t bought it yet so I can ask to see the 24x24. Is there a website to order the samples?
