light or dark for living room with angled tray ceiling

I have a huge (11‘ wide) stone fireplace in my living room and am struggling with choosing colors for the walls, and whether to include built-ins when we paint. We have a limited budget (and need to replace carpet as well) so I’d love to leave the trim alone for now, but included that as an option anyway.

I am torn between going light on the walls to counter the dark stone of the fireplace, because it sort of sucks the light out of the room, or going “dark and moody” to fit the tone of the room. I love natural earthy elements and lots of plants so I’ve been hoping to keep the stone as is. Then my dilemma is if we paint the walls dark, what to do with the angled tray ceiling. The angles tend to cast lots of murky shadows which is another reason I was leaning dark.

See photos for current state 😬 and 9x12 rug we just bought.

dark walls, paint built-ins to match
light walls, leave wood built-ins
Dark/navy walls, leave wood built-ins
Paint the stinkin’ fireplace
light walls, white built-ins and trim
