Probably depends on how myopic you are. You could take a hood to a powder coating shop, mask it appropriately, and have metallic stripes painted on it. I don't think it would appear to be anything other than what it is, though. Ersatz luxe often achieves the opposite of its intent.

You’d have better luck with paint working on a plywood surround with a proper insert than a stainless one. A professional faux finisher who can do this type of work, plus the custom build, and the insert, won’t be a whole lot cheaper than the custom metal hood.
