Ugly bathroom needs mini update until we can do full remodel

last modified: 5 years ago

I absolutely hate our master bath. It’s so ugly and it needs a complete remodel. If I could, I would make a large walk in shower, remove the tub, new floors, new vanity. But we have done so many huge projects recently that I know it’s probably not going to happen anytime soon.

So, ive finally decided to put this project on the back burner and just give it a nice little update. the vinyl floors will stay, the weird peachy tile above the tub will stay, the tub, the vanity.

if you were going to spice up this bathroom, new paint colors, accents/decor on the wall, shower curtains, rugs, blah blah blah, you get the picture. What would you do? I don’t even mind having to paint the vanity if I need to because it’s pretty small. Should only take a weekend to so. Our bedroom is a foresty/sagey green with wood dressers. Thanks so much for your help in advance!

Absolutely paint the Walls. Cool white. Remove the blinds and put stick on film on the windows for privacy. A piece of art over the toilet. of your favorite vacation destination. Fluffy rugs and towels.

Are those electrical cords and appliances hanging by the tub?

Thank you auntthelma! The sticky film on the windows is such a great idea! I’m definitely going to do that.

Lisa, theres a clock radio plugged in there and my husbands electric tooth brush cord. They both don’t reach the tub, but even if they did we literally never use that tub. We’re both bath people, and even if we were it doesn’t drain properly and the water is cold by the time the tub is half full. It’s a nightmare. I just want it gone lol

In addition to the above suggestions, what about springing for a $100 pre-fab laminate top with a more updated pattern for the vanity, and new faucets. That would make it feel a whole lot better/newer for a few hundred bucks. And you could reuse the faucets in a down-the-road remodel.

Paint the walls in White Heron (BM) and paint the cabinets in Oxford Gray, add baskets to semi-hide the cluttering electrical stuff and makeup, wall art over the toilet in a vertical rectangular shape and get a bold design. Add towels in coordinating colours. A large fluffy rug that takes up most of the flooring space to camouflage could work too.

Some white or light paint can freshen the bathroom, but I would start putting away as much cash as possible to get ready for the gut and rebuilding project. It’ll cost at least $20K, and I do say “at least” depending upon the materials you want to use and if you want two sinks and a tub and shower. Take measurements (include windows and doors) and plot them on graph paper (make ten copies) so you can work on layouts. Collect some inspiration photos in your Houzz bathroom ideabook. You can save money by keeping the plumbing where it is unless it just doesn’t work for you or it’s in bad condition.

Why not invest in the window coverings you plan to use for this room? Be careful with the film - it really is best for small windows as you will have a hard time avoiding bumps and creases and bubbles. I think you will be disappointed knowing how large your windows are. Other than that, I'd probably just DIY paint and save the $. Good luck!

Along with the above suggestions (painting the walls and vanity, removing the blinds, and getting new hardware), I would also either get a new framed mirror or just add a frame to your current mirror. I think that would definitely help bring all the updates together! It's often surprising what adding a frame to a builder-grade mirror can do for a bathroom.

Mount a small wall cabinet over the toilet for storage of toilet paper. Per numerous discussions of "fecal spray" in bathrooms, better to have clean rolls than stacked on the floor. Also, less visual clutter on the floor.

I would paint the room in a white that matches the tile, add privacy film to the windows as suggested, remove the clock and look for a pretty piece of art to go over the tub and toilet.

Refold the towels in an attractive way in the basket by the tub and add a couple of candles to create a spa-like feel by the tub. Then finds some baskets as suggested to contain the toiletries on the counter. If you could swing a new vanity top, that would be great, but if not, you can purchase two nicer looking faucets for $50 or so each. Adding hardware to the cabinets will help as well. You should be able to find something decent for around $3-$5 each.

Lastly, find a shower curtain with a pretty print to tie in the bathroom colors and change out the runner in front of the vanity for something that goes the full length of the vanity. An oriental style runner would dress things up a bit.

This is $59 at Home Depot.

    $20 at Target

Do paint all the walls your favorite color.

    Unclutter.

Above head height while sitting down, create a 6'-8' deep wall to wall shelving unit with solid doors above the toilet and put most of your necessities there.

Consider adding a long(side) valance to your windows.
