Which Color Sideboard for my Dining Room?

last modified: 6 years ago

I’m planning to buy a sideboard / buffet and am looking for suggestions on which colors would best complement my dining table and the dining room.

My dining table and chairs are stained “dark chestnut.” (The table is a trestle style table.) The wall color above the wainscoting is Sherwin Williams “Moth Wing.” (Here's a Link to paint color since it's hard to see in my photo.) Hardwood floors are a natural white oak color. I plan to get 2 upholstered end chairs for the dining table and a rug, but haven’t decided on these yet.

Here's a picture of the sideboard I'm considering. It can be two-tone as shown or all one color. There are both paint and stain options. I'm looking for a nice accent color to balance the dark color of the table. I tend to like neutrals so nothing too bold. Also, not interested in red or yellow. I'd prefer to have pops of color accents in artwork or accessories.

The sideboard will go on the wall where the boxes are. Also sharing a picture of the room with natural light.

I’m not sure the color or cottage style of the table you shared is right for your space, but what a beautifully large dining space it is! I might look for something in a natural lighter wood tone, and then use artwork and other decor to add in color.

I agree with Rebecca, not sure if that style goes. Are there other style options? I like the exalted blue, but not sure of it would go with your wall color. Can you order color swatches.

Thanks for the feedback! I’m open to considering other options, but I was wondering if the one I shared would look less “cottage” if it was a different color and/or not two-tone. Also would stained wood vs paint make a difference? I wouldn’t order it in the color combination shown.
I checked out the color samples in store. One of the wood samples I liked is slate, which was a warm gray stain. I don’t think this one is on the color sample picture that I posted. I also liked black onyx, which isn’t as dark as the color of my table, despite the name. I liked the driftwood and claystone paint colors.
Thanks Rebecca for the kind compliment and sample layout. I love the look of console table, but I want more functional storage.

I found a couple pictures of similar style sideboards that I like. Any thoughts on these for my dining room? Does the one with open shelving look better in a solid color (to go with my table & chairs)? I’d get metal knobs instead of wood.

Your dining room is elegant and formal. Something like this would look better than those you posted, IMO (but I like to mix interesting modern/contemporary pieces with more traditional ones).

It might be better to consider a long wall. The sideboard will appear tight between the windows.

The sideboard you selected IMO too casual for this room. It belongs in a kitchen, not in a dining room.

I think the simple design of the sideboard goes very well with your trestle table.

Yes, but both items are a bit austere for the details in the room.

The light fixture is too small for the scale and details of the room

The fixture is mounted too high

Let's hope any rug selected and sideboard have a better scale for this room.

I have similar wall colors and wood tones in my dining room. I have a black metal sideboard, because I prefer a mix of traditional and contemporary.

    This is the sideboard:

Charcoal sideboard with open shelving that been chosen is too simple for your nice room.

Thanks all for the additional feedback and suggestions! I’ll share a few more details about the room, if it might be helpful.

I tend to like simple, clean lines, classic, timeless, not fussy, and relatively family-friendly since we have 2 young elementary-aged girls. I appreciate the comments that my initial selection may be too casual for the room, but I don’t want the room to feel overly formal either.

My dining table is 108” x 42” and the space between the windows (including trim) on the wall where I was planning to put something is about 78”.

@BeverlyFLADeziner, I suspected that the light fixture is too small and/or too high. It is a new home and it’s what the builder put in. I like it, but thought it might be small. I really like the light fixture in the 2nd picture you shared after the mock up of my space.

Also, would a 10x14 rug work?

Here’s a picture of the floor plan (entrance on the right of the dining room is to the foyer and the other is to the kitchen) and pictures of a couple other cabinets that I like.

Your dining space is lovely! I think the 2nd image in your most recent comment is a nice style, maybe in a lighter color? A new light fixture might help the room feel more tied together as well.

Agree the one you chose is a bit too casual for the space.

Also agree about the light fixture.

I would find one in a color like either the sea mist or the moss color that is a bit more formal looking. I like the green one Beverly showed as green still reads as a neutral color but does bring something other than a true neutral into the room

I would go with your first inspiration of sideboard. If you check BM painting site recommendation for coordinating colors for Moth wing...you would see Downing slate color.

It goes good with dark brown dining set as well.

I am just not sure that spot between two windows is the best one. I have doubt that sideboard would good fit there.

I'm wondering about what is going on in the rest of the house re: furnishings and colour. Without knowing more about the overall choices for your home, it is difficult to give feedback on an isolated element like the sideboard. That said, my first impression is that it is too casual as well.

Re: colour, does Moth wing should be show up in some additional accents around your home and did you specifically choose it? When looking at window treatments for your dining room, you should be incorporating both Moth wing (or whatever wall colour) and whatever colour accent you end up choosing.

What a beautifully proportioned, spacious dining room, by the way.

Thanks @Celery. Visualization, Rendering images for the inspiration pictures! It's so helpful to visualize elements in the room! One thing though - I'd put the buffet on the other wall, on the other long side of the table since there wouldn't be enough room behind the end of the table.

Thanks @BeverlyFLADeziner for the link to the Atlanta house in Buckhead. Lovely!! The light fixtures are nice too and I especially like the first one!

@Elizabeth Minish Design, we recently moved into a new home from a much smaller place so there are a few spaces that I am furnishing and decorating. The house was new construction, but we did not select the paint colors. I probably wouldn't have chosen Moth Wing for the dining room, although I don't dislike it. Other colors on the first floor are Accessible Beige in the great room/living room, Nonchalant White in the kitchen/family room (considering replacing with Sea Salt), Sedate Gray in the office, Comfort Gray in the 1st floor guest room, and Sagey in the powder room and other bathrooms (all Sherwin Williams). (I wish I knew how to make one of those floor plans that shows which color each room is painted!) I tend to like neutrals and darker wood for large furniture items and like blues and greens for accent colors. Despite the rising popularity of brass, I lean towards brushed nickel, silver, chrome, etc. I do like oil rubbed bronze and black for fixtures as well though.

Hmmmm. I just looked up all your colours. (I tried to put them all into a document so they could be viewed at once, but to no avail in the limited amount of time I had to try this.) Moth wing and Accessible beige sit together nicely but we don't know how these two spaces relate to each other. All the other colours are in the soft grayed green category. Even Sea Salt (which I fear might be too clean). The hallmark of a great colour scheme for a house is that the colour palette is repeated throughout the entire space. For this reason, I would encourage you to be looking at pulling the grayed green colour scheme into the dining room for your colour accents to tie all the rooms together. The blue, although lovely with Moth Wing, seems not to be backed up anywhere else. The carpet and drapery treatments and possible chair cushions would be ideal vehicles for this colour. Better than a painted side board as I still think that will look too casual for this innately more formal space.

It is a great idea to work on one room at a time, concentrating on having a few fully decorated spaces as opposed to a whole house of partially addressed rooms. That said, one should have a plan for the whole house so it all hangs together in the end. Congratulations on your lovely new home!
