Black windows are not a fad but do not work on every house. Usually they are ordered in black ideally metal. Show a picture of your house and a close up of the windows then you might get some real help.

I don't think it's a fad but keep in mind when painting windows black it attracts a good amount of heat. Vinyl windows do terrible with heat. Wood windows can warp and crack some times. Aluminum and fiberglass tend to do okay.
