SUNBRELLA for American Leather indoor sectional

last modified: 6 years ago

I am ordering an American Leather sectional and have narrowed down fabric choices.

We want a light grey, with teal zig-zag stitch.

Here is my vision board:

I LOVE the colour of Sunbrella Spotlight Ash (and durability - we have 3 young kids), but I worry about the stiffness of the fabric, and it not being comfy, or the seams being clean (I imagine a bit more bumpiness with this stiff fabric?)

I also REALLY love the Crypton "Artemis Stone" but the colour is just a bit off.

Has anyone used Sunbrella in the Spotlight fabric? Feedback?

Here are the fabrics (and swivel chair will be in rusty red felt fabric)

Sunbrella on left (swatchbook) and Crypton on right (beside painting)

Thank you so much!

Haven't had what you seek but suggest you seriously consider having the same color neutral stitching as the neutral fabric you're choosing so you don't end up limiting your options as to what will look good with a stitch in an otherwise neutral colored large investment.

Hi Suezbell, thanks for your input. I'm pretty gung-ho on doing a contrast stitch. I LOVE colour, and feel like it will uplevel the modern vibe I'm going for.

Your room should reflect your taste. Go for it.

If you can delay your decision ( not ordering today), why don't you order a yard of this fabric to play with ? Fabric.com offers it for about $25 per yard. This will allow to be very sure of your decision.

Pillows make color. Rugs provide color. Art provides color. Contrast stitching, I would AVOID. Don't paint yourself into a corner.

Crypton makes spot and stain removal easier. It is not always bleach capable, and you still must exercise some reasonable care. Many Sunbrella CAN be bleached but the less often the better. .......unless you love WORK.

American Leather in sunbrella makes no sense to me just go leather you could do teal leather.

Yes, that too, and change the rusty chairs to something very neutral. COLOR ? It is most effective when you place some limits on it. Doing so...make the color yet more noticeable. I will not use the word.POP as I detest it. But unequal proportions of ANY accent always look more effective, and professional.

Depends your overload quotient. See what I mean below.

@JAN MOYER - {couldn't tag you} - Thank you for your input. Now second-guessing the teal stitching. That makes me sad, but it is a bigger investment for sure.

@JAN and @Patricia Colwell Consulting - I CANNOT do leather in that room. It's far too stark with the walls. I need texture and warmth. We have a very beautiful black leather set in there right now, and it screams cold. American leather has a great fabric selection.

Thank you for reminding me about using small doses of colour {I love colour, but definitely don't want it to look like a circus}. So is my plan: neutral furniture, rug, with colour in the existing artwork and toss cushions?

Jan - Have you ever used Sunbrella's SPOTLIGHT or SAILCLOTH fabrics? {My daughter immediately told me it felt "scratchy"} and not knowing about fabric grades, I worry about how it will sit.

Thank you so much for chiming in! Super helpful!

I have not used Spotlight. But no, you don't want a circus : ) in any scenario. Is your daughter going to sit on it naked? Seems a nice teal quit tossed on would go a long way to solving that issue, and it is NEVER a bad idea with kids sprawled on a sofa. Easy to fold up and STASH. A good idea for adults too. Life...........is LIFE. Use your "noggin". It can save you a lot of soil angst. And crumbs. Get a big one. Put a basket next to the sofa, and stash it.

love it. YES. No naked babies/kids on sectional.

FTR this was our set up prior to renos - where I did practice colour in moderation (; - now our walls are pure white, and we have no more 80's columns.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the Sunbrella, but maybe first order a yard to see. I just find "nappier" fabrics sit a bit better and seams seem cleaner - you know what I mean? {comparing now to my outdoor Sunbrella furniture}.

Okay! I have some homework! Thank you so much! Great advice, Jan!

Ask if you can do the sofa with NO WELT. Much cleaner looking, and much less a dust collector. Particularly on a fabric that is stiffer, bulkier, or heavily textured.
