Frugal Master bedroom revamp needed.

last modified: 5 years ago

Please help!!

Our master bedroom is bland, flat and boring.

I can’t get rid of the bedframe, bench or pictures above( am open to painting the frame a different

color).

We can’t afford to repaint the whole room, but am open to painting one wall if you guys think it’s an option .

I would like to keep the big mirror as it serves 2 functions “houses” my costume jewelry but again an open to other options.

So you can’t afford to buy anything and you don’t want to get rid of anything... Well I wouldn’t recommend painting one wall. I don’t think the pictures should go over the bed. I would move them to another wall. Do you have artwork/pillows you can steal from another room?

The mirror over the dresser looks too small. Could you put the artwork that is over the bed over the dresser? If you keep them over your bed, I would stack them or have them overlap more. Are those matching nightstands? The one on the left looks squished. Is that the only place the bed will fit? Have you tried another layout? If you post the room dimensions and size of furniture (or pics of all walls), more people may chime in.

How about adding a throw blanket and matching pillowcases in a color (as opposed to the cream comforter & pillowcases)? You can get a set of pillowcases at Target for $10 or less if you watch for sales (Target circle on the app frequently gives additional 15-20% off offers). Ross and Big Lots have throws for under $15. Maybe buy one thing a month if that's all you can manage, or check your local thrift stores. Use the bolsters from the bench thing to prop up the pillows when you make the bed.

New curtains in a color to match the new throw blanket (or a pattern with some of that color) would help. Ross usually has a few 4 panel curtain packs, or if you're open to a diy project, drop cloths are pretty cheap and I bet they can be dyed with fabric dye from Joanns or Michaels...or stencil them.

The mirror above the dresser would look better if it were centered above the dresser. It really need to be bigger...maybe a bigger mirror (or a picture would be better because you already have a mirror in the room) could be a 4th purchase after the others? Again, check thrift stores and discount stores and also FB marketplace.

    Good luck!

Hi. If you're positive the bed won't go anywhere else -- I'd buy a bedside storage bag that tucks under the mattress, in order to remove the corner nightstand. Move the bed over a bit, and it should look better.

Windows are placed ok, but idk that myself, I'd bother accenting them with lotsa color or pattern. Can you put up more of same curtains, so it's fuller?

Can you find a duvet cover? what color do you like.... nice bedroom, btw. :)

.. is that a cover you have now?

Limited wall space / already have duvet cover and pillows and throw would be nice. Possibly a striking rug under foot of bed and bench ? $55.

No Cost changes.....center the chest on the wall instead of squished into the corner. You need a larger mirror, or a piece of art since you use the mirrored jewelry storage piece as a mirror.

I can't tell from your picture if there is a doorway on the wall to the right of the bed (and I would center the bed if there is no door) but I would at least move the bed over a few inches, overlapping the window for a few inches. This would unsquish the end tables as they will move right as well.

Curtains are too short and too skimpy and their color is somewhat drab. This will cost some money to replace with more panels of the right length and perhaps a print. Clever shopping can save money. The rods which are there are a little skimpy as well, but you can continue to use them. I also like to have my curtains or drapes return to the wall, especially as you have a window which you can see from the side. The return can be done as simply as cutting a small hole in the curtain header about 4 inches from each end, pulling the curtain to the wall and using a thumbtack or pushpin to fasten to the wall.

And the pillows need some work to look inviting....no cost option, too.

Need more pictures of the whole room from all angles. Stand at door into room and take photos going clockwise around room standing as far back as you can. No panoramic type photos. They distort and we can assess scale properly.

Not a pro, but I'll take a stab at this too.
Proper bedding will make all the difference. A duvet cover or new bedspread, and you need proper pillows too. Euro pillows, then a layer of regular pillows in shams, then a couple of smaller accent pillows.
As was posted above, your bed appears scooched to one side. You can't center on the wall, so center on the space. Your lamps need to be centered on the night stands and should probably be taller. Colorful curtains would do wonders.
As was said earlier, can you steal from other rooms to accomplish what you are going for?
    Good luck.

On a tight budget, consider some trips to your neighborhood Habitat for Humanity Restore Store to see if something there suits your needs. Sales and donations mean the inventory changes each day, especially in the spring ... remodel season. Also check other thrift stores and "antique"/used stuff stores as well.

The symmetry of your lamps is off as is the symmetry of the mirror over your chest of drawers.

With the full length floor mirror, you might not even need the smaller mirror ... it certainly doesn't need to be alone off centered above the chest of drawers. You might put your two elongated art pieces (now above your headboard), above your chest of drawers instead. That would open up that space above your headboard for a better option for lamps.

Centering re-purposing your two bedside lamps elsewhere and, instead, add a pair of swing arm lamps over the headboard would create even more of a matched set that any lamps beside your bed because your room only has one window on the wall with the headboard.

You could still keep bedside tables but, as a practical matter, for the sake of symmetry, you could put a wider one centered beneath the window and a narrower one on the other side. They don't even need to match beyond being painted the the same color.

Do keep the bench but you might look for more colorful round elongated bolsters. You could also both keep the pillow shams you have but add two more bed pillows with the new pillow shams having your favorite colors in them ... perhaps to coordinate and/or match new bolsters for the bench.

In lieu of buying new curtains, you could hem the curtains you already have so they're length of the window frame -- just barely covering it.That would be better than squishing them with the bed side table.

Like the light/bright framed round mirror -- makes the hardware on the drawers stand out.

You might try a pair of slightly taller and more colorful (red or blue or green) vases to flank your mirror.

I think this looks very improved. Based on the title of your question, has this been a frugal change?
Don't hate me, but I've got to ask... When your house was built, a wall was intended to be the bed wall. That's just how architects think. They don't think people should have lots of bed wall options. We don't have dimensions of your room and walls, but is it possible the wall where your standing mirror is, was intended as the bed wall? Just asking. Not suggesting any furniture moving... yet. :)
I can see now why you can't move your bed any further to the right. You've got a door there. But, IF the standing mirror wall was intended as the bed wall, it would explain why the wall where your bed is, is not wide enough for a bed plus night stands. It does look like the perfect size to center a dresser on the wall portion, or even set up a little seating area next to your patio(?) door.
    Just wondering here...

I'm with Lisa T. It looks as if the nook would be a better location for your bed and night stands and the wall where your bed is now for the dressing so it can uncower from the wall.

Looks nice! When you raise the curtain rods, install them a bit wider if you can so that the whole window is visible when they're pushed to the side.

Ok. How wide is niche wall? Bed would work much better there. Dresser where headboard is now. That would also free up more floor space for deep bench.

Wow I think you made some great changes! I particularly like that mirror and the extra splashes of color on the bed and bench.

Robyn. Do you have “sliders”? For moving furniture on carpet or flooring? Very valuable and helpful.

I like your pale blue wall color and that you've added more blue in bolder shades to the room.

Sorry... I'm put off by how the windows/ curtains are. If bed were on another wall, different a bit. Or art over bed could have the color instead of curtains.. etc.

Sorry, but the gold is not calming and draperies are better in bedrooms close to colors of walls. The dark blues work. If you can’t move bed, I think the dresser would be better in nook area. Then put pictures over bed over dresser. If you choose to keep gold drapery then remove the dark blue. And just repeat gold on bed.

Agree with Flo and others who have commented that the bed appears squished between those windows, can you try it on the wall on the left? Then the dresser could go between the windows.

Love the blue on the bed. Big improvement!

If you feel the bed is squished but really want the head of the bed by the windows, you might consider adding a single shelf to the wall above the headboard beneath the art for items that usually go beside the bed and move the bedside tables elsewhere, replacing them with a pair of relatively inexpensive modern floor lamps -- the kind with one light shining toward the ceiling and the other with a flexible arm to be reachable from the bed and usable for reading, etc.

I have a heavy oak (more traditional) floor lamp table combo buy my bed but I also have one of these in the corner at the beginning of the hall and recently bought a second one for my as a reading light. I like them well enough that if I needed more floor lamps, I seriously consider buying more of these -- affordable at $13.67 +tax each ... and they're actually already mostly put together since they just need to be laid out (on bed or floor) so you can align the sections of pipe, twist/screw them together and then pull the cord into place .. .no tools required.

Painting one wall to make it look refreshed is a good idea. Your walls are light grey with a blue shade, so I got a crazy idea for this. You could paint one wall in a more saturated sky-blue color and draw white clouds! IDK how it sounds, but it looks amazing in my head. I also had little money for a room revamp but needed it so badly. So I painted walls by myself and bought a table at a garage sale, and everybody was amazed at the result. You can find more tips on how to be frugal on the internet. I hope my idea was helpful!

Try Flo's furniture arrangement before doing anything else, get the layout right first.
