I’m trying to improve this family room.

I am trying to make this room look better. Can anyone help me with this room. The rug is going and the two samples near the sectional I am considering. I can also return the coffee table and end table. The chair belongs in my other room but I was testing it in here. I am willing to paint or any other changes.

    Good morning,

If you aren't afraid of a little color, I would suggest an accent color pulled from whichever rug you decide to go on the wall with the painting, probably a darker/bighter color like the maroon. Alternatively, you could match the white of the built-in cabinets onto that wall. I think what you need most in this room is more contrast since there is a lot of beige/tan with the wall and the couch. Another way that you could freshen up this room is by refacing the fireplace/installing a wood mantle. I'm not sure if that's within the budget, but it would definitely change the feel of the space.

Do you have other photos of the room, perhaps a view closer to the fireplace that includes the end table?

If you have a good view out your windows, then a large, well-anchored mirror with a driftwood frame would reflect the light coming from the window. That kind of frame would add texture to the room as well.

Otherwise, relocate your art--it's too small--and find something much bigger across that wall in your palette of grays from the sofa, golden floors, and whatever rug you choose.

Where is this rug you chose and are you suggesting changing the chair color?

I don’t have to keep these tables. I prefer stained wood in more traditional tones. Would that work? What about the mantle color. Yes I have thought of stained wood but would painting it another color work? What about the fireplace tile?

    And the wall color?

I like the rug with the dark border? Where is it from?

    What about sconces?

The rug sample in the foreground right looks like it would tie together the chair and sectional colors nicely.

Do you have a link to vendor photos of the rugs you are considering? It's hard for us to get a sense of them from the samples in the photo.

Not sure what look you're going for. Right now, everything looks very traditional & colorless with the exception of the coffee table that has a more modern appeal. If I had a hefty budget: search for a more colorful rug as suggested by BeverlyFLADeziner. The chair looks OK. Perhaps you can find a rug with a bit of the chair color in it, that or reupholster. The walls are almost the same color as the couch. I'd repaint walls in some form of warm white but if you get the right rug & a few colorful pillows, larger more modern artwork, you might get away without re-painting. Those shelves are too cluttered with small objects. The small lamp does nothing. An arc lamp might work. Perhaps a small table to the right of the sectional (where you now have the carpet samples). Reface the fireplace & wooden mantle.

I feel like your wall should have the bookcases and the fireplace all the same color, perhaps all the white, with the backs of the bookcases the yellow/gold in the rug on the right or the red from the rug on the right, with decluttering them as well. I also like the arc lamp but with a natural shade and the existing coffe table. Not so much a fan of the chair though.

Rugs are from RugsUSA.com. Yes I am suggesting a soft rust colored chair works better with these rugs

I favor the last rug, Capistrano Beige. Depends on what look you're going for. And I also like red chair.

    Your current rug works, also.

Just to show idea of how all these colors can potentially work together.

Pillows on sofa to tie in the colors. Velvets works well with leather, as one texture option.

Below - The glass on this lamp is not best option if you have children, but something like this could be nice with your current rug, also.

Personally, I think the one considered is too delicately small in pattern, as to not complement the secional.

    How about this rug?

Your room looks very traditional with the book shelves? Would consider painting the entire room one color? Trim, doors, mantle,shelves......for a fun room it can be a fun look.

Find a large rug for all your furniture to rest on, then pull a complementary or contrast color for the room,

which can give you a very architectural feel for a very plain room.

beverlyfladeziner will the ivory work in this room. Are you sure it’s not too yellow.

    do you like these rugs?

Just to say I like the warm neutral what I can see, with simple repeating of warm wood floor, and relating well with sofa and fp. Chair adds interest. I didn't know there was another rug just a few feet away....
