ditch bulbs making us smile this morning...

At this depressing time it is nice to see some happy color starting. We look forward to warmer weather so we can start to do some clean-up (It's been too cold to work out there so it's a bit of a mess as you can see in the pictures below.)

More than 15 years ago we planted a random collection of small bulbs in the east-facing side of the front ditch. Some of them (e.g. bulb irises) never came back after the first spring. Winter aconites only showed up - one flower! - last spring. This spring there are about a dozen of them! Most of the other bulbs have not spread as fast as we hoped (squirrels...?) but they are cheery to see. Neighbours have been commenting on them too (from a good social distance as we pass on the road walking!) It was unusually warm this morning so all the flowers were open and making a nice show.

From a distance they aren't too visible, but viewed closer they are nice and cheery:

Do you grow little bulbs in grass? How long has it taken for them to spread? We are likely to be gone from here by the time these ones really carpet the ditch!
