I think it'll look worse if the colors don't match than if you'd bought a seat that didn't have the metal hinges. Amazon has some toilet seats with chrome hinges whose color may be closer to that of the Toto toilet.

I'm hoping there might be someone who has tried combining the Bemis white toilet seat with a cotton white Toto toilet. Did those colors look all right together? Anyone?

Thank you for your thoughts, likewhatyoudo. That increases my desire to get a different brand of toilet seat rather than Toto's. Your description of it being uncomfortable makes me sure I do not want it!

I would go with the matching toilet seat. I appreciate your desire to honor your vintage home with a bathroom that looks “authentic,” but...there are other places than the toilet seat to do that. I’d focus on your vanity, faucets, towel bars, wallpaper, art, etc. Trust me, no one will be looking at your toilet seat or toilet seat hinges.

Given that Toto has sold millions of toilets, it really sounds like you have unreasonable expectations.

I’m telling you my experience! I can also tell you do a google search I’m not the only one with this issue. I do know how to clean a toilet. The inside is not smooth and it stained within a few months.
