Paint color for walls in white kitchen with blue backsplash?

last modified: 5 years ago

We have renovated our kitchen with Pure white Omega Blair kitchen cabinets with a Calacatta gold quartz countertop. The floors are Smartcore Carrolton Walnut vinyl plank flooring. We are now finishing up with wall paint and a white trim. We are looking for a very soft color. I would like to come up with something that will also look OK with the cottage white that is on the walls of the neighboring rooms. I think Revere Pewter might do it. My DH likes the Solemn Silence. I painted poster board with several colors and we've narrowed it to these two.

Above is the general layout of the kitchen. It's fairly small. The two walls behind that are not shown have no cabinets and will just be painted.

In the picture above, the Solemn Silence sample is on the left of the sink and the Revere Pewter is to the right.

Here is the Revere Pewter above the window.

This is the Solemn Silence above the window.

What color do you think will tie everything together in the kitchen and be OK with the surrounding rooms which have more warm colors.

Hate to say this, but I think you might ought to keep looking. The Revere Pewter according to some reviews can be muddy with green tones once it's over a large surface area, and I don't feel the Solemn Silence gives you enough coloration to really run with the color scheme you have going there. Have you looked at Benjamin Moore's Affinity Collection? Some really beautiful colors there, and the paint quality is superb if you get the top-rated paint they have called Aura which is water resistant and good for kitchen areas. Eggshell is a nice sheen, but satin isn't bad, either. I'm afraid the two colors you picked are too much on the cool, gray side to go with your warmer colors elsewhere, and maybe something more in the middle would make you happier in the long run.

Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it will check out that collection. My DH really like Behr Marquis paints. Any suggestions in that line of paints too?

I would find a paint color that compliments your floor

Behr has gotten good reviews from Consumer Reports in past years, though I cannot speak to more recent years as it has been a while since I looked at those. Among the pro-level paints available to a wide consumer base, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore are outstanding. I just did two rooms in BM's Aura paint with a color from the Affinity Collection and am so pleased with it. I looked at many different brands of paints for months and kept coming back to the Affinty Collection because the colors were so perfect. Your area might get by with a single gallon. The paint covers well, though you might need two coats, but Aura paint goes a long way, and it is good for wet environments.

You can try HGTV‘s Sherwin Williams paint color in Gracious Griege. I had BM Revere Pewter, and as one person said, it can come across as muddy during certain times of the day. On a good day, it was a true color, but with little light, it came across as more of a pinkish undertone.

I put up gracious griege and it literally looked like a soft creamy greyish beige (a little on the cooler side, but not so much that it’s too bright). It can literally pick up on your colors and compliment it without being overpowering. Give it a try!

Do walls in cabinet color but flat finish. That will look crisp and beautiful with your backsplash. A blue enameled tea kettle and some pretty wood boards will provide interest and warmth.

If you were to place yellow around, or creamy yellow, etc....

could wall paint be a pale version of blue backsplash?

All of these ideas are wonderful! Thank you all. I feel like it is all coming together. Absolutely love the blue tea kettle. Will try a couple of those other paint colors. Trying to avoid going to the stores but maybe just one more run for samples, then final paint and done.

I much prefer the Revere Pewter to the Solemn Silence, but if there's as little wall area as there appears to be, I'd go with Flo's suggestion of just repeating the cabinet color in a flat finish. When the painted wall is chopped up into small patches, I think it works best to just repeat a color that is already in the palette.

ETA: Now I see your comment that the two walls not shown have no cabs and will be painted, so...I vote for Revere Pewter.

I would look for a blue print wallpaper.

I don’t think we want more blue other than in accents. But we were looking for a light neutral gray/blue/greige to put on the walls. We have two small areas around cabinets and window but two big bare walls. IMO it needs to be pretty light to keep the kitchen from feeling dark or small. I am starting to think that we should just get a slightly lighter shade of one of the ones we like. Also, as our contractor pointed out- its paint, if you dont like it, repaint. We are doing the painting ourselves so not a big cost.

Here is my kitchen currently. The lighter neutral shade is SW Gracious Griege and the more beige one is the Revere Pewter. I have navy accents in my kitchen and it will look great with the more neutral gracious greige.

Would you mind sharing the size of the kitchen? It looks lovely

Thanks so much. We are loving it so far. I waited a long time for this. The room is about 11 ft by 12. We do have a small table and four chairs.

Asking then if you'd like to liven area of the set with bright wall.... or neutral wall...

Neutral for sure. Before the reno, I had yellow walls and cream cupboards. I also had a sunflower border. I think this time we are looking to do a neutral then add color with accessories ( other than the blue backsplash).

I like the Mindful Gray suggested by Pro, Beth H as well as her accessories that will help tie your colors together. I think the Mindful Gray relates nicely to your floor, backsplash and cabinets and will make your white cabinets pop.

The revere pewter looks too green against your blue backsplash and the solemn silence is too blue against the floor. Also, the Maria Killam Color Me Happy blog at mariakillam.com. has more discussion on these kinds of dilemmas.

the color of the walls is a little matched with the color of the floor.Green with light green or beige

I love white with pops of color. I think the affair with grey is winding down. When I reno'd my kitchen I did my cabinets, walls and ceilings in Ben Moore's "Chantilly Lace". It's a bright white that isn't too blue or too yellow. I never tired of it, and when I moved I painted my whole house with the same color. Anytime a color is added to a wall it darkens the room. I wanted everything as bright as possible... I think there are 2 keys to going white a la white: wood for warmth (I had wood floors and wood counter tops), and pops of color to add interest. I like the ideas others had about pops of Navy through lighting, tea kettles, etc. A 3rd color can sometimes help - like a few pops of bright yellow. If you can find the right shade of yellow, that could even work for the bit of paint you'll have on the walls by your cabinets/blue back splash. Don't have to take it to the other walls. I think it would be much more cheery than shades of grey... As a matter of fact, I stopped at someone's house to find out what color yellow they did on their doors: when I picked up samples it was too dark for my door, but with their dark navy/grey it was perfect: Ben Moor'es "Gentlemans Grey" with "Sun Porch".

Both are darker than I'm recommending... Hard to find that perfect shade... Anyway, I always think 3 colors looks best: one color being the majority 80-90% (white in your case), a second color being 5-20% (blue back splash and accessories), and a 3rd for an extra pop (yellow doors in this example - 2-10% if that much).... This house never would have caught my eye without those yellow doors! And is probably only 1-2% of the exterior, but makes it stand out! Good luck with your choices!

Benjamin Moore's Pale Oak looks beautiful with navy and white. It would provide a nice contrast with your white cabinets, but will keep the room light and airy. I have it in several rooms with different lighting & it looks great in all light.

I say neither. At first I liked the one, then I liked the other. I think a super light blue might work, but I like the suggestions others have made. The addition of wood accents and that dark blue pendant is fabulous. So let's see:

That is Air Blue by Behr. OR...

The bottom one is Ethereal White by Behr. I used the Behr website color picker tool to do this. Good luck!

Totally off subject.....what pops out to me is the white electrical outlet switch covers. Black would disappear and not break up your expanse of blue. Usually electricians aren’t in the loop on the decorating decisions and they default to white or cream.

I agree with them popping out. When I can shop again, I am going to try and find a matching blue.

@FisherNan thank for sharing. My room for my kitchen is about 14x15. Would you mind sharing your floor plan?

When choosing a color, fiirst, think about the color temperature of the natural light coming in your window(s) in the kitchen. Is is warm, coming from the south, east or west? Then you can probably get away with a cool color on the walls. If the windows are north-facing, DO NOT use grey or a cool color (those two you've picked out seem quite grey to me)-- it will make the room with the white & blue seem much too cold and dreary. There's enough gray already in the room with the stainless appliances. If it were my kitchen, I'd choose a color in the warmer buff to light tan range, which would connect with the colors in the floor. Check out Laurel Bern's blog; she recommends colors that work well.

Try Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams. It's a liveable beige that will go with your floors but isn't yellow or pink or green and plays well with gray.

Of course last time we painted we tried 17 different quartz colors. A portion of our wall has no texture because of all the coats of paint

I think the revere grey is the way to go. The other is too white and makes the contrast of the navy and blue cold and stark.
They grey acts as a better connector of the two colors and is in the same color palette of the existing colors in the kitchen.
Definitely, keep the walls neutral and don’t introduce another strong color there. If you want a pop or another bright color do it with accessories such as a bowl, kettle or plant pot.

Putting a Grey or beige on you walls completely defeats the beauty you have going on right now. Use same color as cabinets then use accessories to bring accents and warmth. Otherwise, things are going to look very patchwork. Most of the colors you are thinking about will be too dark against these cabinets. Kitchen runners have come a long way too as a way to add pattern and color.

You should repeat the blue of the backsplash throughout the kitchen with accessories, rugs or curtians. In the photos it stands out too much.

I vote for white; it makes blue look brilliant always, and your back splash should be the defining object in your room.....

Beth h idea are great. Mindful gray would look gorgeous revere pewter maybe too dark and muddy.

I am about to start a new project and realized that I never posted our finished kitchen. We chose BM American White for the walls. It a very light gray. We absolutely love everything and thank you all for the great advice. My favorite tips were to bring in wood cutting boards etc. Great ideas and it just warmed it right up.
