Fake chipboard tile on bathroom walls?

I'm trying to puzzle out WHAT this stuff is and what's behind it. It's got the feel of compressed wood/chipboard and it's all over the bathroom. I really hate the look but I'm hesitant to start pulling it out because I don't know what's behind it. Did they cut out some drywall to make this stuff even with the wall above the molding? I've got some pics of it before I started messing with it ( https://i.imgur.com/9NoIFXJ.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/dw2Hdz2.jpg) as well as some where I've dug in a bit (https://i.imgur.com/czsDocd.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/yen707g.jpg). You can see the area beside the bathtub it's totally started to rot away (https://i.imgur.com/RQZLlht.jpg). I have no idea who thought this was a good idea.

I'd like to remove it then repair the wall however necessary and just paint them normally. Can anyone point me in the right direction even if it's just what this stuff is called, what may be behind it or how this was done in the first place?
