whats the best way to refinish red oak floors
Comments (2)I used a Varethane product. Interior, heavy traffic. Satin finish. Applied with sheep skin applicator. I think it was about 6 years ago and I put on 2 coats. Would I be able to refinish just spots of the floor or will I be sorry with the results? Thanks in advance for any advice and product recommendations!...See MoreNeed to choose a stain by tomorrow for red oak floors!!
Comments (93)We used Minwax, to answer someone's question above. Liana, I had a hard time deciding too, since I didn't want any red to show up in my floors. The floor color we chose did end up looking somewhat red in different lights. Colors can look so much different depending on the lighting in that area, and also if it is finished or not. Our GC put samples on the floor too, which I originally posted the pic of, but once they were finished, it didn't look nearly like the original he had just painted on for me to look at. I would keep searching on Houzz or see if you have a friend nearby with floors that you like, and then ask them exactly what they did to get that look. We have since moved from the house from above, and our new house has the red oak golden floors again, so I will have to pick another floor choice again soon. I chose the 50/50 dark walnut and Provincial, but it was too red for me, so I wouldn't go with that option for anyone looking to stay away from the reddish tones. Good luck in your decision! It's tough!...See MoreNeed help choosing a floor stain for my red oak floors
Comments (9)Provential and walnut still have a lot of red if you like that look. They are beautiful. We wanted a more modern/brown look at mixed 75% Jacobean and 25% classic white. Just dark enough. Cuts the green tint and toned down the grain. Color is on left and we could not be happier. Weathered oak (I think on right...but it's been a few weeks ;) is a nice light option that has more brown tones)....See MoreRed oak floor stain (oil, water based polyurethane or a stain)
Comments (1)Natural oak is very versatile design wise and keeps rooms light. That said, the walnut is pretty too, though sometimes some stains accentuate the grain more than I like. The oil based polyurethane will amber over time while water based will not, or not as much. My main level floors are natural oak and I love them. My upstairs floors are gunstock and I like them too. The darker floors do show dust a bit more. To test stain, just wipe each stain on an extra piece of oak and look at them in different light and pay attention to how much the grain stands out. You can look at a flooring center, but different stains can look a little different depending on the company. Also, make sure you look at samples or make samples on some of the pieces that have a lot of grain since seeing the effect of the stain on the grain is one thing you want to test....See Morejillybean103
