Help Beloved Living Room’s Soul to Sing!

We moved to our dream home this year and I’m slowly curating with our most favorite things. Here’s where I need your creative help! I finally have a fireplace in my living room (swoon!) I refinished it with a large concrete looking porcelain tile that I love! But now my Ballet White walls, the missing symmetry...hmmm. What to do? I use this room a lot. For sipping wine, enjoying fires, friends (oh, those were the days) family games (on not yet purchased cocktail table). I chose what’s here- on purpose! Rug, sofa and chair fabric- a start! And now I’m just stuck! It’s an oddly built room that lacks symmetry of any kind and I’m faking symmetry by current furniture placement even though I know it’s not the best flow! Fireplace is askew, window placement, floating wall to the right, floating wall behind, French doors that are begging to be blown out for sliding glass wall (hubby says hell to the no!) So please. This room has a soul and it’s just waiting to sing! The fireplace wall? We’ve thought feature? Walnut slats? Cool textured wallpaper? Dark “cheating heart” paint since used in other areas of home (exterior trim, front door, kitchen island)... or maybe that new shade of green that 2020 is lovin’? I’m on hold from buying other fabulous furniture until there’s a plan! Share ideas! Give me advice! Fireplace wall, symmetry (lack of) and ideas of furniture to help this room sing! You are all amazing. So thanks.

Hi, your room has a very nice start. If you could pare down your lengthy post to two or three short, specific questions you might get some helpful responses.

End tables, cocktail table, lamps and have you tried the couch where the chairs are and the chairs where the couch is? Sheers on the window or some kind of covering. Will you have a TV in here because that would mean a slightly different furniture arrangement. Do like your fireplace and it is swoon worthy".

Challenging room for sure, but I would suggest you don’t try too hard for symmetry. Based on your fp style ( love your tile choice) and furniture you prefer more contemporary look, and asymmetrical is common in contemporary and modern styles. See photo below where furniture is not centered to FP, that’s what I suggest you do, and especially because room has a border. You are wise to put things on hold until furniture placement is worked out. I think even though the FP is off Center the room can still be balanced without being symmetrical. I suggest to try to center rug in border, and then switching chairs and sofa placement to see how that looks.

is that fan making you sing? it really is the odd guy out since it works with nothing that you have.

If you need a fan, get something a bit more mod looking that works w/your fireplace. white or wood, doesn't matter, as long as it's on the sleek side.

your sofas, rug, wall color and fireplace are all the same cloudy day color.

You want contrast? paint your white doors Cheating Heart. or try these darker purple tones that work w/your rug color

Stick a tall plant in the corner by the window.

Bring in some artwork for the walls.

Put a little table between those two chairs

.... something I'd like to see in person: created by printing the image on the back side of a mirror then encasing it with a narrow, black metal frame. 44W x 33H

A color you like painted or papered on the small wall at the back - continuing with simple lines in rest of the room - color here, sculpture there [corner by the window?]

You all gave great ideas. Thanks! Many said switch the furniture and work within the inlay! I think now we can start to add pieces. Yes to lots of art- I adore large paintings. No way to that fan! If anyone has additional ideas to the walls to side of fireplace, please share. Cheating heart for doors and back wall are great ideas. And yes, our lops match the room. What can I say?

Switching the layout was brilliant.....now give us a better photo of the room when standing behind the two armless chairs.

    Better? Thx!

Cheating Heart might be right color for back doors since I use on our front! Thx for suggestion.

oh yes. I think doing those doors in that room instead of the white will be a great contrast addition.

you really just need some art, pillows, plant, a new fan, table, and some other little decor items and it will look perfect.

    Great floors too

If my post, I didn't mean dark doors. Front of house has plenty of black... kitchen, any black? well... might be overdoing with black doors on back of house too.

Maybe an accent color on back wall, but small concern for right now...

    In grey too.

Good reviews. Classic solid voile sheer creates a warm atmosphere with beautiful light diffusion. As a general rule, for proper fullness panels should measure 2-3 times the width of your window/opening. Pole Pocket with Hook Belt. 100% Polyester | Double Layered.

Thanks! Rug really is the “cloudy day” commented in another post, the colors are chocolate, mushroom, tan... yep, I’m bringing some beige back in a better way (the hope!) But mostly because hubby adores brown/beige. I’ll find some great contrast colors in accents. Love your lilac plan. It’s beautiful. I’m just not a lilac kinda girl- wardrobe or decor. Maybe someday! But what you picked looks awesome together!

New layout looks better. I think sofa could come forward onto the rug more, it doesn’t need to be against wall. Above everdeb added a photo showing a modern chair and ottoman. I could see something like it or similar angled in corner(not the window corner) see photo below. This could be a good spot to relax by FP with that glass of wine.

Turn the rug and center it between the two walls. Only place the front feet of the chairs on the rug. add drapery panels, tree, art & lighting.

    Is rug a 12x12?

White floating shelves on the left with carefully selected objects could enhance the area and work well with w Beverlys ideas shown above.

Material of black ceiling light - how glam?

in a fireplace room now more contemporary-sleek ... black doors would seem an extra sleek?... if black, would you be able to have softness quite as well. Black trim seems popular, and some would add furry rug, etc....

Do you want patterns? do you want to add feeling in this room as the red rug adds over there? just thinking....

My view about both window curtains [at side and high], and nothing high on the fp --- celerygirl's large wall of frames helps a balance, because it's high up in the room. [I hope it's coming across.] I guess I mean that if you don't want art that decorates the fp, at least have something that lifts the eyes, and prevents too minimal a look... just me... ?

I like the rug but it is too small. As for art, do you have a favorite animal, vacation memory or architectural building around which to base a grouping? I wouldn't get a huge coffee table unless you intend to pull all the seating within 12-18" of it. "C" tables might be a more interesting way to handle where people put down their drinks.
