HI -- I would either fill it in or remove the wall , it serves no purpose as is now . Seems to me if you were trying to fill it in with the fabric , then maybe you should fill in the opening . I personally would remove the half wall . I would not hang or set things on it . If you want to keep it then remove the trim or have the trim be the color of the walls. Putting a screen in there is just going to look like a fix up and not going to add anything to your rooms , it will just make it look like more of a problem . The opening is also off kilter because of the different heights at the top , it should have been the same height as the other doorway. That tells me that maybe that opening was an after thought , so it's never going to look right if left as it is.

I wish you were my client as I love tackling design dilemmas such as yours. The large, deep, but not especially accessible space can provide a great storage space for seasonal or infrequently needed items, media equipment, or if structurally viable a safe. The fireplace serves as the focal point of your space so should look very attractive. I suggest working with a designer and cabinet maker on a paneled overmantle that spans the entire surround and features concealed hinged doors such as the one in the first photo and an overall design that visually frames the tv such as in the second photo. You can then select a small quantity of high impact accessories for the mantle that will balance out the overall look and be easy to remove for those instances when you do need to access the hidden storage. Hello. I am guessing these cabinets are fairly old and worn. From the pictures it looks like both of the corners aren't the best of storage. Do you have a pantry anywhere or would you want one? I like the straight lines of your trim and a mission style cabinet would look great in here. The idea of glass door upper cabinets is a great idea and if you want you can use obscure glass but still get an airier affect. Glass tile backsplash would work well also and keep it casual. If I were to guesstimate a complete redo for you it would be about $13,000 if you don't do the work yourself. I would be happy to draw up some plans for you if this is something that would help.

I like the natural stone color! I think some contrasting colors would really make the room pop. Also you can probable get some inexpensive tapestry for one of the walls and would consider getting rid of the slatted wall behind the fireplace, or run stone veneer all the wall up.
