Exterior Paint Colors Dilemma!

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi everyone! We just bought this house and although I have been inspired by @User and her exteriors on the Napa Valley Farmhouse - I was curious what everyone thought about that color scheme for our exterior? I jokingly call our interior style Danish Modern Boho - we love eclectic design (LOTS of gallery artwork walls with loads of oil & canvas paintings in our collection!) and aren't really your all white/shiplap walls kind of folks (not that there's anything wrong with that!).....although we have LOTS of original (wood) Danish Modern furniture inside, we don't want to FORCE our 1980's ranch into something it, well, altogether ISN'T. Hubby wanted modern exterior lights, frosted glass garage doors, and frosted front door (our entry is DARK because massive fireplace is centered in our living room right by entry) but I am LESS enthused about ANYTHING frosted! The front yard, it should be noted, will all be entirely redone into a small sitting area but 95% of it WILL be raised garden beds as I am a VERY passionate grower of food! *It should be noted that the window to garage is OFFSET - arg!* So - I would DEEPLY appreciate hearing your thoughts! This house is a bit blah - but it's countryside location in CA with its hillside backdrop is truly dreamy! Thank you all in advance!

I agree with white and rectangular non- frosted windows on the garage door. Paint the garage door to match the front door in a fun color like yellow or chartreuse. Cute house!

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images - you are THE SWEETEST!!!! Thank you SO very much! I love the 2nd one especially! I have played around with Sherwin Williams Color Visualizer -- is this what you used? I haven't been able to get detailed garage doors like you did!? I also like our current color, but the back side of the house is South-facing, and gets HIT HARD by the sun here in Santa Barbara County (we are located in a small town between the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria, CA) -- we get HOT HOT HOT summers, and even though this green was painted on not all that long ago, the backyard/backside of the house is peeling and chipping ALREADY! So, we want to go light in order to get as much longevity as possible out of the paint. I also feel the house appears MUCH smaller than it actually is (it's almost 2,000 sq ft - but you'd never know it based off the frontage!) so we felt that a lighter color would also make the house appear larger. What are y'all's thoughts about taking @celerygirl 's awesome garage doors and creating similar styled shutters on the garage window - ESP since it is offset???

you can go with this style from Home depot.

I would not go with shutters.

It would be nice if whatever you decided for the outside flowed inside the home also. Here is another home in Napa.

Maybe this could be a compromise for the garage door. Seems to go with both styles

@BeverlyFLADeziner and @Celery. Visualization, Rendering images - you guys are incredible!!! Thank you both SOOOO much!!!! It's funny how a simple 80's ranch seems like more of a challenge than a period home or an uber modern home: it's just so, ummmmm, non-descript. ;) I will totally research your options more and I will absolutely update y'all on what our final outcome turns out to be!! Thanks AGAIN!!!

I think we're going to stick to my original inspo!?

    Nice house. Great location.

Existing colors suit the house. Would not paint it white. IF and when it actually needs painting, you might consider two shades of green to have the house meld well with its surroundings.

If you're planting veggies, you might want to cut the trees from within your front planting area so its roots do not compete for nutrients.

To keep the veggie planting area interesting between veggie growing seasons, you might consider planting some items -- such as strawberries and/or spices -- in pyramids:

Wouldn't want frosted windows unless truly needed for privacy and that isn't the case for the high garage windows.

If not wanting someone knocking at the door being able to see in is the reason for considering frosted windows on the door, consider tinted film placed on the glass before investing in frosted glass. For the large window by the door -- for all windows -- invest in mini blinds you can hang within the window frame and, as needed, the slats can be tilted so anyone looking in sees ceiling and those inside can still see out.

Thanks @suezbell! I will definitely look into the planting suggestions! We have high quality blinds on all windows already - they're just "up" in the pics! I am trying to sort out what to do with the garage window being off balance: it drives me MAD! ;) Yes, I have definitely talked hubby out of anything frosted window! Whew! I am actually all FOR an almost all glass (clear) door! I am not worried about prying eyes as we live in a lovely small community AND the biggest problem with our house is the VERY dark entry! Due to the fact that there is a massive brick fireplace very close to the front door! So, getting as much light in as possible is def needed! I'll have to hang mirrors appropriately as well to reflect as much light as possible! The exterior paint was painted pretty recently and the problem is the backyard is south facing and the paint is already chipping and peeling. We get TONS of hot sun exposure to the backside of the house. So we really need to go with a light color! Thanks for all your advice and inspo!!!

I would not like white on that house either. I do love the existing color. Its a very cute house. Congratulations on your new home.

If the offset window of the garage disturbs you, have you consider adding another window or, if not a real one, a faux window beside it. When stores begin reopening, it will likely be remodeling season and Habitat for Humanity gets a lot of windows people have changed out. Perhaps you could find one the same size to add to the garage, with or without an actual opening behind it.

Another item, if you're DIY inclined, that might create symmetry is a wood "window frame" with a planter (with plastic rectangle planter(s) attached to it to protect the house from moisture) either for spices or just flowers that don't require a deep pot for deep roots. Use the same painted board frame as the window, with or without glass panes, and add a matching window box planter to it and the actual window.
