I would look at Chilewich runners they just get cleaned by hosing them off and drying in the sun, No tracking in from the garage will stain .

We do Always go without shoes indoors so the seagrass will not get really dirty...just a lot of foot traffic. I read that the weave of a seagrass runner makes a difference in the softness of the rug....I ordered some samples but I thought maybe someone had first hand experience

Seagrass or Jute are not going to take a beating and they can only be vacuumed so they are not for high traffic areas. Have you considered an indoor outdoor runner? They are woven of polypropylene and can be hosed down and scrubbed outside if necessary. They are resistant to staining.
