HELP--ugly vinyl exterior on mid-century ranch

We're first-time buyers of a 1956 ranch. It currently has pretty hideous beige vinyl siding. We're about to close on the house and not sure what's underneath (most of the houses on the street are brick). The interior is pretty original, so we want to maintain/restore the original aesthetic. What are our options? Should we paint the vinyl? Get a bid to remove it? Paint the door a bright color and ignore the siding?

I have a 1956 MCM ranch and I would never put vinyl siding on it.I think I would be curious to know what is under it for sure .They often mixed the brick with siding . I have pebble dash stucco and siding on mine I so wish I had brick insted but we have learned to love the pebble dash it is a bit of history where we live in B.C. Another thought to keep in mind down the road is some really cool MCM landscaping . This idea is one of my favorites. We are still working on the inside so will tackle the landscaping next.

It would have been highly unusual to put vinyl over brick. But you never know. Are the windows the original wood or are they vinyl as well?

The color of the siding is not bad, what I don't like is the white windows with a thin dark trim. I would go all dark trim or all white. A new front door that is more MCM with a full glass front storm would look good. Add the foundation plantings.

All in all, your house looks good.

The windows are vinyl as well. Plan is to--at the very least--paint all the trim white, remove the screen door and paint a bright teal or peacock blue. And some MCM landscaping.

You should be able to find a piece to loosen up and see what is under neath it, and then reattach the vinyl. Hopefully, someone just wanted maintenance free, and the original is all good underneath.

Agree with all of the above comments - and cat_ky nailed it. I bet there was a pretty good salesman in the area sometime after it was built so the original owners fell for the vinyl siding. You may be pleasantly surprised. One of my clients found CBS (Concrete, block and stucco) in very good condition under vinyl siding when I sold him a very inexpensive foreclosure a few years ago. That was a win :)

Here is our 1970s ranch with ugly beige-brown siding when we got it, and after putting stucco and new doors/windows...sorry the "before" picture comes out kind of dark but maybe you can get the idea...

Thank you all! This is really helpful. We're going to get a peek under the siding and fingers crossed what's underneath is in good shape

At the time it was built, garages were highlighted with white just like the trim. White/light colors draw the eye. But nowadays we generally like to downplay the garage doors, by trying to get them to blend in with the body of the house, or to make them great to look at by adding a high-end wood garage door with small windows. My personal preference is to not go all-out historical, and avoid white garage doors.
