May FOTESS Participation (Games and Photos for Group Members)
FOTESS – May 2020
I'm posting the May Heading for FOTESS early because of this first game. The Kentucky Derby is usually on the first Saturday in May and since that won't happen as usual this year, I have planned a special Gardener's Derby for us.
Our group called FOTESS requires membership so if you are a member, join in. If you want to find out more about the group contact me, sandlapper_rose here on FOTESS.
No need to specifically sign up since all members can play the games and we won't be doing any physical swapping this month – although I will send out some prizes for the winners in late May or early June.
Here are the horses I have created to race in our Gardener's Derby on May 2. On that day, I will do a random drawing to determine the winner and the horse to place and show. You will post here to indicate the horse you have chosen. Once a horse has been posted here as chosen, no one else can pick that horse. Pick a different one on the list. In parenthesis I have included the type of plant where I found the name. You don 't need to list that.
Members, stop by before May 2nd to pick the ONE horse you want to win.
Voodoo Lily (Amorphophallus)
Ginger Gold (Apple)
Razzmatazz (Echinacea)
Great Expectations (Hosta)
Kin Kan (Kerria japonica)
Jetfire (Narcissus)
Habanero (Pepper)
Supermagic (Petunia)
Sleigh Bells (Azalea)
Amadeus (Rose)
Celebrity (Tomato)
Flair (Tulip)
I'll also be having a game that involves answers or photos or both to start after our Derby race so more fun ahead!
I found this interesting information when I looked online to see about the Kentucky Derby. I always watch it on TV so I thought some others might like to know about this, too. You can find more information online.
Making it through the first Saturday in May without a Kentucky Derby will be tough for a lot of people in the Bluegrass State. Churchill Downs has a plan, though. The home of the Run for the Roses is planning to host a day-long at-home virtual Kentucky Derby party that'll feature a virtual race between each Triple Crown winner. Churchill Downs wants fans to honor the annual tradition while staying “Healthy at Home,"according to a news release from Churchill Downs. A special broadcast will air on NBC on May 2 from 3-6 pm featuring the 2015 Kentucky Derby that kicked off American Pharoah’s historic Triple Crown run. In addition, the NBC broadcast will highlight Churchill Downs’ first-ever virtual horse race — The Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown, a computer-simulated version of a race under the historic Twin Spires of Churchill Downs. NBC's broadcast will be called "The First Saturday in May" and will include interviews with jockeys, owners and others involved with the sport. And it's not just the race. A full day of online festivities is planned including virtual tours of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, Derby cocktail and fascinator-making instructions, ideas for party decorations, kids’ crafts, Kentucky Derby-inspired recipes, an at-home Kentucky Derby fashion contest and more.

tiny secondary bulb that forms in the angle between a leaf and stem or in place of flowers on certain plants. Tried to download a picture earlier but Houzz thought it was too large so I had to take another photo and download. I always have trouble downloading my phone photos.
Agave bulbils maybe???

sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agoWell, I tried to post this and lost it. Yes, Ruth, you are right! 2 more points for you.
I'll extend the question. 1 point for the first person to correctly post the name of the plant in my garden (pictured above) that has bulbils. And 1 point for the first person to correctly post the name of the plant below that has bulbils. (The same person can answer both if they wish.)

The first one looks like Egyptian walking onions.
The second might be tiger lily.
a couple.blooms in Nebraska. its COLD here. 35 degrees last night and 55 high today. Heidi

sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agoEmily, you are correct on the Egyptian Walking Onions. I love to watch how they grow.
And we have more pretty pictures to look at. Thanks for sharing, Heidi and Ruth.
I like the EWO too. My I'toi onions also have bulbils even though they are a multiplier onion.
Is the second one just lily then?
Egyptian Walking Onions....I have not grown these. I have always thought they are very interesting!! Very cool plant!!
Jeanne, how is work going with your roof and the trees?
Annie - 5 years ago
jeanne I thought of you today. planted out seeds you sent. Also planted gifted hostas in what will be my shade garden when I have plants and not mud.

sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years ago1 point for Emily for answering lily about the plant pictured. I think it's either an asiatic or oriental lily. I try to bury a tag when I plant them and sometimes I can still read the words even after some time has passed. I didn't attempt to find the tag though.
As for the tree and my roof, I got someone here to cut the tree into rather large pieces the week after this happened and then they were able to drag it off the sidewalk and out of my way. They came back the following week to clean all of that up. I've had another tree service out to go over trees I wanted taken down, branches to trim, etc. I hope it will look okay when they finish, but I can't handle having all those limbs so close to the house any more. They will come out next week. I also finally got through the homeowner's insurance portion of this and finished with that yesterday and lined up a roofer to start work - likely week after next but possibly late next week. It has been an ordeal and has taken a long time. Three weeks now since that storm and the tree fell! It was good I called lots of tree services because some I called within a day or two still haven't called me back.
I really think the voles have gotten after one of my favorite rose bushes so I'm going out there later to dig and see if I can tell of any damage to the roots (or if there are even any left) and if there is hope I guess I'll trim it way back and put it in a container for now. It's looking sad and has been dropping its leaves, not putting out any new growth,, so I need to do something. I tried the repellent that worked once before, but I don't think I'm having success with it in this spot.

This is a garden that has been long ignored. Finally weeded it and filled it with perennial. The 5 plants to the left were all bought at a greenhouse near here for 1.69 each. It’s my new favorite greenhouse. Lol
sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoGood morning! We are back to having some hotter temperatures again. However, I think there is a cold front heading our way in a day or two and that should help to bring the temperature down a bit.
I believe this is St. John's Wort, the only thing that throws me off is this has grown taller for me than what the height is reported to be. I know another gardener gave me this as a small plant and now it's probably a 3 to 3 1/2 foot tall shrub. I love the bright yellow flowers.

I'll post a picture that will be a plant part question later today.
I hope everyone has a good weekend.
Jeanne, I have been fighting voles for several years. I have lost many roses and other flowers and vegetables. Very destructive.........
Margo, a greenhouse that sells plants for $1.69.....what a steal. I can not even imagine finding a plant for $1.69 out here....
Happy weekend.....enjoy!!

I'm back with a plant part question. This part of the daylily is called the _ _ _ _ _. (Hopefully you can tell
which part my arrow is pointing out.)
2 points for the person who is the first to post the correct answer. I'll try to total up the points again after this one.sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoCorrect answer, Emily! I'll be sure to add 2 more points to your total score.
A scape is a flower stalk without leaves although it may have some modified leaves called bracts. The scape is the entire flower stalk above the crown.
For the points as of now:

how was everyones weekend?
jeanne you seem to be very busy these days so i hope you got a chance to get some rest.
my greenhouse is doing well since i put it against the house it hasnt fallen over and my latest attempt at seedlings is going well.
newest dilemma is how to get my weed barrier to stay down. i have the regular black weed barrier and it not staying down. the weeds grow under and pop the stakes out. having a difficult season here.
i wanted to post this pic from baker seeds... they sent a newsletter saying they are shipping again and they had this photo posted.

isnt that corn so cool? i have planted a few seeds of the strawberry corn this year. 2 plants have come up. hoping to get corn this year! - 5 years ago
i spoke too soon. i just took a look outside and the greenhouse has once again collapsed. :'(
- 5 years ago
Urooj, so sorry to hear about the greenhouse and the poor seedlings. Do you think an animal knocked it over or did you have high winds?
The Glass Gem corn is gorgeous and such a nice story behind it.
I grew Painted Mountain Corn one year. That was my only experience growing corn. I still have some kernels somewhere that I should grind into flour.
I bought the glass gem corn. It’s been germinating well then dying once it is about 6 inches tall. I’m holding on to my last three seeds to try again when i get my greenhouse. It’s been on back order and we aren’t sure if we will actually get it.
sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoSo nice to see the recent comments. After a sunny dry week last week, here came the rain today and it will continue for another day or two. I'm not sure the trees will get cut and trimmed this week and I'll bet it will also put the roofers behind. They did come out to put a tarp over the roof on Friday so I'm glad that got done.
As for resting, I've been having very severe pain in my left leg for quite awhile and it has gotten a lot worse recently so rest is not working out for me. There is not a single position I can get in that doesn't cause pain and constantly moving hasn't helped either. I put ice on it when it becomes unbearable and take some prescription pain pills I have - even that doesn't take all the pain away. I had a doctor's appointment today and I'll be trying a different medication so I sure hope it helps. What do you do when you can't tolerate sitting, standing, walking or lying down? Maybe I need to learn how to stand on my head - sure won't be able to do that any more!
Our corn on the cob being sold here now is so delicious. I really think it's the best I've ever had. Next trip to the store, I'll look for some again. (I agree that picture of Glass Gem corn looks amazing!) Once I get my outdoor areas taken care of, I'll try to do a little more planting. Right now I think everything I've planted out there is a target for something falling on it or being stepped on in the process as people work on the place.
Urooj, oh no, not again - so sorry about your greenhouse. I hope you come up with a solution.
smitties! that's so cool. do keep us updated on the glass gem corn! and i don't know what to tell you about getting a greenhouse.
well this time i had put the seedlings all the way at the top so i knew where they were. we had to take it apart from the bottom up and when i got to the top i separated whatever i could find and now i have 2 trays of mystery seedlings... i keep thinking i should have taken a picture when i planted them. good new though! i got my fig into the ground today. i hope the little guy does well. my daughter said i have to call it little gal :) btw there were 2 rooted cuttings next to each other so technically 2 fig plants, i didn't separate them because the lady at the nursery told me not to, but i was sure tempted because i wanted 2 fig bushes instead of one. of course it was marked FIG, so i have no idea what kind it is. i googled types of figs and oh my the possibilities are endless! my neighbor to the right is growing figs, pear, peach, apricot, pomegranate, lemon and something else she couldn't remember... whereas when i got my fruit trees my lawn guy said they needed shade so he refused to plant them and they died. (i still have them on the patio. dead.) super jealous here, but on the bright side, they always share!
jeanne, i feel so bad for all you are going through. wow what a tough time. i guess sometimes all you can do is take pain meds and sometimes that doesn't even help. how about a warm bath? soak in the tub for a while? gardening definitely won't help and may even exacerbate the pain but if you're like me, that won't stop you! but hey maybe the rain will slow you down!
emily, we do have high winds these day. thunderstorms and rain too! i keep a chair in front of it but the little ones moved it to talk to the neighbor over the fence and well the rest is history! sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agoHopefully I'll start to feel a bit better in another day or two. Last night was really bad with the pain. I only got about 2 hours of sleep. Please excuse me for not posting more; I can't sit for long and the pain has me distracted from almost everything.
No baths or soaking here, Urooj. I would never manage to get in or out of the tub. My only attempt at anything outside was to bring the small potted plants that were so badly soaked into the garage so they can dry some. Tomorrow is supposed to be even worse than today was. None of this outside work can get done until the storms let up.
Please turn off the rain!
glad to see your post jeanne, even though it was a somber update. please get some rest and let us know if we can help in any way.
please don't worry too much about posting. we will keep the chat going with our updates!i was so tired from all my gardening yesterday, i could barely get up this morning. i did go out and throw down a few more morning glory seeds.
my calla lillies are taller this year and i have 3 flowers this year so i will have a ton of seeds come Tammys fall/winter swap.
i took a look at my salvaged seedlings and the super tiny ones didn't look so good this morning. i may have to to go to the nursery and just pick up a bunch of plants. my brotherinlaw in chicago has a ton of activity in his garden. today he sent me a picture of raspberries, strawberries and cherries. in return, i sent him a picture of my fallen greenhouse.
still trying to figure out why i haven't gotten any irises yet. the leaves are out, but no flowers. - 5 years ago
This is my second post today. The other one didn’t post for some reason. Jeanne, do they know what the problem is causing all the pain? Is therapy an option? No one should have to live with that kind of pain. be careful with those prescription drugs.
rain, rain and more rain. The forecast for the next 10 days has rain in it every day. So much for my gardens. I’m worried about my poor perennials gett root rot. With this quarantine, I need to get out as much as possible. sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI have been taking the high dose of meds prescribed for me on Monday for 3 days now and finally was able to get a full night of sleep last night. What a relief. I'm only on this for 9 more days and have to start to decrease the dosage today so I don't know how the days ahead will be, but that pain was way too bad to deal with. I tend to think of myself as someone who can tolerate pain, but not when it's like that.
More good news - the roofers are here today to make repairs on the roof. No rain so far today and only a 15% change. I may have the tree people here tomorrow so it's good that I can feel better right now. I could hardly think with all the pain. Not pain free at this point but so much better.
I hope everyone has a good day.
And finally another plant part question:
What is the function of a pneumatophore in plants growing in swamps or marches?
(First to post the right answer gets 2 points)
Jeanne, sorry that you are in such pain. Are they able to treat the underlying issue?
Pneumatophore isan arial root specialized for gas exchange. It projects above the mud and have small openings through which air (oxygen) passes to the roots beneath the mud. sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agoRight answer, Emily! I have some of these on the trees on our property where a pond forms off and on depending on the amount of rain.
So after ordering a greenhouse from Costco only to have to cancel it because they were so backordered, then ordering one from Lowe's only to have the same thing, we finally got to order one from Wayfair today after we called to make sure we would get it. They have 30 in the warehouse and we will be receiving it next Friday. All the circumstance before this worked out because we were able to upgrade to a 6x10 for less then the 6x8 because Wayfair is having a sale. I never order from them because I feel they are expensive. When they sent me a postcard for 10% off this weekend, I pitched it. Never dreamed we would get one let alone at a decent price.
Jeanne, have you mentioned what is causing this pain that I missed or do they even know? I feel bad for you because I used to have such pain in my back at times that I would be knocked down for a day or two and that was when my kids were younger so my MIL would come over to help. I tried meds but they made me sick. I finally found a chiropractor to help me. I sure hope something helps you. sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agoApparently there were bad storms in the area late yesterday and overnight, but for once they missed my place. Very thankful.
I walked around outside and took a few pictures of what's blooming - Daylilies and Whirling Butterflies, which I love. I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Jeanne, those are gorgeous daylilies. Mine have yet to bloom although I see flower buds on one so hopefully soon. I have never heard of whirling butterflies. Very nice!
sandlapper_rose
Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoGaura lindheimerii 'Whirling Butterflies' does great for me here. Blooms just about all summer and comes back year after year.
As for my leg issue, I'm moving around better and getting more sleep - whether it will continue once I am to stop taking the meds, I don't know, but glad for some relief right now. Have a good weekend!
Jeanne, glad you are getting some relief.
I think the plant you are referring to as a whirling butterfly is a guara. I can't keep them alive and I've tried several times. I haven't tried at this house but the soil is about the same so I am thinking that is what it is.
I have been doing so much gardening and have gotten so much done. More then I have any other year. Covid and retirement is responsible for that. We just need to stop getting rain. I know everything is going to die if it doesn't. It is raining every day after we had a 3 inch day and it is supposed to rain every day if only a tstorm like today.
Our community now has a seed library where we can drop or pick up seeds and plants. It was just started Friday. I have dropped of nearly 75 packages and everything there was vegetables and most were multiples. All my vegies are planted. I do like the idea and maybe it will get more users over time.
Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. Margo - 5 years ago
Margo-Love the seed library idea. DH said if I would give up one of my 35 flower beds he would plant us a veg. garden but I said no I will just buy the vegs, with the money from flower sales. Maybe this flower addiction will pass one day. Congratulations on your greenhouse.
Jeanne-Glad to hear your leg is giving you some relief. Very hard to function without sleep and rest. I have seen rain until I am so tired of it, all my plants are water logged. Love your daylily pictures but none are blooming here yet.
Went on my second hike today since I broke my hip. My daughter was so nervous and constantly trying to help me over roots and rocks. Not up to the 5 miles and more but will get there hopefully.
For those who live in CA, where do you recommend to buy milkweed and which ones? I was reading to get swamp milkweed. I have the tropical milkweed but was reading that its not a good one to have.
Anyone have experience with the following milkweeds below and was it hard to grow from seed?- Asclepias californica – deep pinkish/magenta-ish flowers
- Asclepias eriocarpa aka Indian milkweed
- Asclepias fascicularis – aka Narrow-leaved milkweed.
- Asclepias vestita – aka Wooly milkweed.

Hi everyone and Happy Memorial Day.
May has been a whirlwind of activity here both in the garden and for me personally. We welcomed our newest addition to our family, Melissa, our granddaughter, last week and before that I was assisting mom as she has two other little ones at home all under the age of 5. That was tiring, much more than anything I am used to anymore!
Thanks to everyone that sent me birthday cards and wishes. And special thanks to Mandy and Jayeanne for the seeds as well. I am planting them today.
I just returned home last night and have a lot of catching up to do. Take care everyone.
I will post a pic of the baby soon.

Original Author5 years agoCongratulations on your new granddaughter, Susan. How exciting!
Sorry, Nicole. I have no experience to share on milkweed. I planted some once from seed but it never amounted to anything.
More rain ahead here - I think just about all week although some days I think it's only 20-30%, other days higher so we'll see what happens. I still need the tree service to come out to cut and trim trees and more roof repairs are needed - also waiting for an agreeable day.
Nicole, I can not help you with Milkweed either.......
Jeanne, I LOVE Gaura. I moved a wonderful Gaura a few years back and it succumbed. I should have just left it alone.
Susan, new life....Melissa....congratulations!!!!
Margo, I have not ordered anything from Wayfarer. I do agree, some of the prices do seem high. But I know people who buy lots from them and are very happy.
Shirley, hike # 2.....good for you....tiz a good thing to have your daughter watching over you!!,
Happy day ladies.....

Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoNo rain today and the tree service came to cut back and take down trees! I suspect there were at least 12 trees taken down and lots of major branch trimming. Two more trees to go on another day. I was worried it might look bad with so much taken away, but it has just opened it up and I'll be glad not to see branches and leaning trees so close to the house with the storms. Sounds like a full week of storms and rain ahead. I don't believe there has ever been so much worrisome weather at this time of the year.
Leaving a picture of one of my daylilies that bloomed today. Sure is pretty! The stem broke so it came inside to be in a bud vase.

I'll try to post a few more plant part questions before we get to the end of the month. I learn things from finding the questions to post!- 5 years agoHi all!

This is one of my tomatoes that froze. When I was going to pull it out it still had some leaves so I thought why not see if it would come back and it is! Usually by Memorial Day all the peonies and daisies are in full bloom, but it's been cool. Daisies are coming one bloom at a time. Everything is very green!
New director of parks in town. The park flower beds I help with don't look good. No mulch for 2 years. The mowing boys pick up branches and junk and throw on the flower beds to keep mowing. I can't figure out why a city would put in a dozen flower beds and then let them go to weeds. Well, that was negative. Sorry.
I got poppies!!! I just keep trying and at my old house an orange poppy came back and had a gorgeous bloom the size of a tulip. Then today I saw a dozen tiny poppies the size of quarters in pink. Ohhhh, it happened!!!! Heidi

Original Author5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI'm so sorry, but it doesn't look like I will get to more plant part questions. Perhaps I can try it again one month when I am hostess again. Congratulations to Nicole who won our Gardener's Derby Game and to Emily who is clearly first in the Plant Parts Game. I'll get little prizes send out early in June. Thanks to everyone for posting comments, pictures, and participating!
We continue to have storms off and on and the humidity these past few days has been horrid. I heard someone say it is so oppressive because of two air masses that came together - all I know is you can hardly stand to be outside. Meanwhile, I'm arranging more times to get roofers and other people out here to evaluate damage and schedule repairs. The roofers can return on Monday which is great. The back part of the roof hasn't been repaired yet and I started getting interior leaks which correspond with where they still need to do repairs. This tree episode has been a nightmare, but the services I dealt had some very nice people to deal with so that has been much appreciated. (However, I'm glad I called LOTS of them because here it is over 2 months later and I haven't even gotten a return call from some of the tree services. I know they are busy, but they need to leave a message or something about how backed up they are.)
Here's a picture of my gladiolus that's in bloom today. My plants seem to have loved all the rain. Of course, we have very sandy soil so they don't stay waterlogged in it.

Jeanne, thank you for a fun and educational month. I hope the roof gets fixed soon before the leaks cause more damage. Hope you are feeling better as well.
Here is a flower I found on my passionfruit yesterday.

Passionfruit....I keep meaning to grow it but have not. Is it invasive at your house? I know people who have grown it and say that it can be invasive......maybe it is the variety they are growing.
Thanks Jeanne....I learned quite a few things this month.
A Q....maybe I already posted this.....how do you start/plant the little bulbils. I have lots of them on my Tiger lilies. Do I have to pot them up? Or do I plant directly in the ground out here in Southern CA????
Happy weekend!
Annie - 5 years ago
Annie, my passionfruit is not invasive, well not like weeds. It doesn't grow a new plant on its own. It does need a trellis and can take over a trellis so that might be what they meant by invasive. Mine is the Frederick variety, and I like the juice from it. I also have a red Jamaican variety that I am rooting from a cutting I got at the CRFG scion exchange earlier this year.
passionfruit. yummmmy. i would love to plant that some day.
i have no ideas about the lillies annie. good luck with those.
jayeanne we had a great month even though you were so busy with everything going on at home. hope all the tree issues get settled soon and the health issues get settled even sooner!
i took a few pics of the garden and am trying to upload them again on my phone while i type this on my laptop. in gardening news, i have a few things coming up, like some beans of some sort. my plants are coming up nicely but i don't have too many. although guess what, i put my greenhouse up again. i know i know, i'm in for it.
i am going out back now to have a little bbq on the patio and will take a look at the seedlings. lets hope they are growing.
are we swapping next month? we are opening up and people are out and about down here, but i know my family up north is still pretty much home bound. - 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
Jeanne, thank you for a fun month. I didn't participate much but did read all the posts. Hope your feeling better and getting your trees and repairs taken care of. I love that gladiolus. I keep meaning to get a few. Tried them once and didn't work for me.
Shirley I'm amazed that you are already hiking.
Annie I've grown two types of passion vine. Plain regular type was in a pot and still started coming up all over. Took a while to get rid of it. I love Passiflora foetida but it doesn't overwinter for me.
I posted the June swap but for some reason it's not showing up. I'm not falling for that again. Happened once before so I reposted and ended up with two posted that I could not delete. If it doesn't show up in a day or two I'll post again.

Hello, Gardening Friends, I'm the new kid on the block.
Congratulations to Susan on your new granddaughter! Grandchildren are great!
Jeane, I hope you are feeling better soon. Being in pain is definitely not fun and certainly interferes with a gardenerr's life.
I planted 7 new Old English roses this Spring. I snapped a photo of Olivia Rose Austin last week just after an afternoon shower. So pretty sparkling with the rain drops!
