Are there hardwoods under the carpet? If you're keeping the carpet, I would simply change the wall color to a nice neutral and change out the ceiling fan for one with out a light fixture. Just something in white to match the ceiling. The room doesn't have a lot of architectural detail, so I like the warmth the oak trim brings to it.

The subflooring is partical board

Particle board is never good sub floor BTW

Are you planning on keeping the carpet? A flat weave would be a better choice, IMO.

I plan on replacing the carpet and painting. Just looking for suggestions on colors and materials! Flat weave sounds like a good idea.

Consider a warm white paint, that is on trend, and would lower the contrast between the oak and the walls........possibly a blend of the lightest color in your sofa?

find a rug that is done in a tweed effect; cost effective and lots of choices that will work with the warm oak trim.

Also you have a lot of room on either side of the fireplace; consider putting the TV on either side down low over a console?

Or if you are considering new furniture place the TV on another entirely and see about doing a sectional that embraces the new TV location and the fireplace. win win.

Some examples of TV to side of fireplace in rooms with multiple windows and some nice furniture arrangements.

I think a carpet like wool sisal would be a nice option for you.

You're welcome! From what I hear from flooring experts on here, wool is one of the best carpet materials you can use. It wears well and cleans up easily. Looking forward to seeing your progress!
