Stem of bird of paradise broke off

Hi!
A part of the massive bird of paradise plant broke off outside during a storm.
After 2 days I took it on and planted it in a pot.
Now I read you are supposed to cut the stem off with a clear cut to avoid mould and bacteria.
Should I take it out of the pot and cut it? Put something on the cut? Or leave it and hope for the best?
Will it grow roots?
I hope it will survive!! Help!
