It is a reflection of the light fixture above the island... whoops.

If something heavy was dropped, there would probably be chips at the impact points (unless the item was rounded, but I'm going to assume no one's been playing toss, with a bowling ball, in the kitchen). It looks as if someone stepped on the counter and it flexed when most of his weight was shifted to one foot. I guess some kind of similar impact could have occurred while it was being transported.

Maybe Karin_mt can weigh in on whether this can occur naturally. She has messaging enabled on her member page.

It looks recent to me, and not natural. Can you feel anything when you run your fingers over it?

I'm interested in how the stone lies on the underlayment/cabinets. You should be able to dance a Conga line across properly installed stone. Is the center of the mark where one would place a foot while changing or installing the bulb in the ceiling fixture? That and improper installation would explain why there is no impact mark.

You may lighten it with some Pectro (clear, not black), but I'd learn to start liking it. It does look cool and natural.

We have mont blanc quartizite, and I'm not at home right now to look but I'm pretty sure we have this exact same thing on ours and it's always been there. So, looks like I'm in the minority, but I vote natural.

It reminds me of what happens when we try to step (cautiously) on rotten ice one of our partially frozen ponds. If the ice isn't solid, it flexes and leaves a similar pattern. Even if it's not natural, it is kind of unusual, and as long as it's not indicative of an underlying problem with the cabinets, I'd embrace it.

BTW, I never thought to ask how big the spot is--can you take a pic with an object nearby--an ink pen, soda can, or something else to give an idea of scale?
