Help needed to decor big pine wall of family room

last modified: 6 years ago

Hi,

I am looking for ideas to decor the big pine wall of my family room. Attached here the pic of the room layout and wall. I am confused that what kind/size of artwork to add on the wall opposite to dining area because I think nothing is required above the TV area (I might be wrong :-))

I am also thinking to replace clock to big stylish clock (my family doesn't want to change the clock position)

Please suggest whether to go for one big artwork or collection of a few small pieces? Any guidelines for the size of the artwork so it should not look bulky in the room? What kind of material to choose for the decor?

Thanks

Sona

you've gotten some lovely suggestions above. I'll only add that I would give some consideration to putting a shelving unit on that wall, partly because it might add definition to your dining room space and also be very useful for storing wine and glasses, etc. A shelving unit can also hold decorative items and framed artworks. It doesn't need to be an expensive arrangement of shelves. I would go with something unpainted (and these below are too big) but I'm just offering these as an idea of shapes. i would look for shelves that echo the squares and triangles in your chairs and dining table.

and definitely a decorative clock! if it is in your budget, I would go with a less traditional area rug. In fact, I would probably get two area rugs, a round midcentury one for the family area and a plainer square one for under the dining table .

I like the advise you received so far. Let me add one other thing. Did you notice every picture of the shelving units had a white wall behind the shelves? I like wood, but you have too much in this room and it makes the room look dreary. I would paint the wood on the wall white (or a light cream) and add a light color area rug on the floor. This will not only make the room look fresh but will make the book shelves or art pop. Good luck.

I would paint the wood white, and put a big. mirror on 5e wall and get a giant clock which would look great. below the mirror I would put a dresser for storage.

TV is too large. Do Not even consider painting the natural wood wall.

Leave the wood unpainted - this is your cozy family room. A storage unit for placemats, games, candles, popcorn maker, etc. would be very handy along that wall. The top would be a serving area. One large picture would complete visually with the TV so I would have 6 or 8 photos in matching frames. Or a hutch painted an interesting mid-century color, perhaps a shade of green taken from your chairs.

Personally, from the pic I would be painting the wall a nice creamy white. That said, does the brown paneling go all around the room or is it just an accent wall? If you don't want to paint, I would consider replacing the baseboard and crown with trim stained the same color as the wood wall(s). I might put a light color on the ceiling as well...the contrast of white against the wood color wall is too stark for my taste. I would also switch out the fluorescent light fixtures and either wall mount the TV or get a console about twice as high as what is there right now. I liked the pic someone shared that showed an industrial looking bookshelf of substantial size...perhaps you could position it so it would help make the heat/air unit somewhat go away after you stage it. As for rugs I think I would be getting two of the same but make sure they are of a large size so as not to look dinky in a large space. Good luck and have fun!!

If you decide to paint the wall: clean it with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate,) rinse, let dry, lightly sand, tack off sanding dust, prime with 2 coats KILZ or Zinzer, paint with 1-2 coats of your color.

What kind of lighting do you have in the room? I only see the overhead fixtures on the ceiling which look very commercial and overhead lighting is never flattering to you or to your stuff. Please consider improving your lighting. And then make a decision about the walls...although my choice is to keep the wood and add color and interest to your wall with artwork.

Just a thought. We were of the belief not to paint our 1970's era wood paneling, but finally the darkness of the room just got too bothersome, no matter how many ceiling lights we installed, as well as table lamps. We had it professionally painted, so that the knotty holes sap didn't bleed through the paint, and we are thrilled with the results. I've attached pictures of 2 rooms that we painted in case you would like to consider the option. But it is a personal choice, and although we are completely at peace with painting the wood paneling, we totally respect and appreciate those that do not want to do that.

I really like the mixed arrangements proposed by Irene Morresey. Yes, the clock is too dinky.

Thanks everyone for your valuable comments. We bought this house couple of months ago. The kitchen, bookshelf on the opposite wall too were brown but I got it White painted. I was thinking to leave the wood panel as it is for a few months and later paint to either white or some light shades. I got now the overall idea that how to decor the wall and other elements. Thankyou everyone. Please suggest whether I should consider white or any other light colour of paint with White walls. Do I consider wallpaper with some light print?

@ banff1976 I am in the same boat now as you were there. It was really hard for me to decor brown bookshelf and now a similar problem is with Wall panel :-) Your room transformation is really awesome and inspiring me to go wall painted :-) Thanks for sharing pics

I would not paint it. You just need to break it up with pictures, mirrors and adding a few plants in the room will make a difference too. I heard a designer say once that every room should have elements of life, texture, glass, metal and wood. If you have all of those elements then you should be getting close to the balance that will please your eye.

Thanks @Amber Webb love your suggestion to have all elements in the room.

If you decide to cover up the wood with a light color use paint, not wallpaper. If you can afford to have it painted professionally that is best because it can be difficult to paint over pine with a light color. If you like the wood as it is, you should keep it!

One suggestion I will make is that if you hang paintings, do it in a way that does not put holes into the wood.

I vote for keeping the pine as an accent wall. While looking at the comments on your pine wall, an ad came up for Ted's Vintage Art Prints - https://tedsvintageart.com/ . I think two or three of these ( maybe 24"x36") would look good on your wall. You could frame them or mount them on foam core. I would take out the fluorescent lights and add interesting floor lamps. Get a bigger stylish clock and hang a little lower.

The wall looks to be in very good shape. The first thing I would try is painting the trim and baseboard a much different color, anything but white! Yes, remove the clock to another room. I personally despise florescent lighting. To me it looks like a doctor's office, not a home. Perhaps replace the bulbs with a warmer tone?

I would paint the wood. It's too dark for my eye. I like 'old white', a creamy white, but if you like the rustic look, keep it and maybe get a 'plaid-looking' area rug in light beige tones. I think you need a piece of furniture against that wall, i,e a credenza, then you can add items at different heights to go with your gallery wall, plus a lamp. Perhaps a floor lamp would illuminate the room as well. Have fun!

I would definitely paint the Wood. I had a knotty pine breezeway that was so outdated & dreary ..........my husband painted it a light grey color with charcoal colored doors and white trim. It completely changed the whole look of the room and brightened it up!

Thanks @Pam Bruno, Would you mind to share pics of the wall if you can.

Wish I had the before photos for you but it’s regular knotty pine

@Pam Bruno your wall looks awesome. thanks for sharing pics

Thank you, Sona. My husband did a great job! He asked if I wanted the wood ripped out & I thought it would be easier & cheaper to just paint it & I really like the way it came. I think he primed it first so the knots wouldn’t bleed through. It’s so much brighter & cleaner looking than the knotty pine.
