I would move everything down about 18" closer to the fireplace. Then pull the sofa off the wall and center the seating area on the firebox.

Are you looking for something modern in a rug? What's your budget? What colors do you like?

Love that idea! Yes, modern rug but nothing too busy. I like soothing earth colors but want some accent color I can swap out when I tire of it. Was thinking of using a rusty orange or silvery blue.

Is this what you meant in terms of layout?

Do I need to lose the chair next to the wood stand?

    Without the second chair.

Was thinking of using this painting as my color inspiration and maybe using chartreuse as an accent.

I suggest a sofa table for back of sofa since it is floating.

    Rug idea.

Love the rugs you found. Does the sofa table need to be the same length as the sofa? Same type of legs?

The paint on the fireplace is a warm gray. I think it is Sherwin Williams intellectual gray. I have to check.

I see how a little bit of color in the rug does warm up the room a lot.

A little bit of color really can make all the difference. It’s amazing.

I’m glad you like the rugs. Here is link for second one I posted and I will look for the other one, too.

No - sofa table doesn’t have to be the same length as sofa, but it could be.

And it doesn’t have to have same legs, etc

The wood rack should not be against a bare wall ....it will fit on the other side of the fireplace...maybe even angled a little ....on the end?...have you considered painting the fireplace?

Sorry that I think your art might be 'lost' unseen on fireplace wall.

I think a low profile rug will define the dining room better ...and add a little softer influence into the room as well...it doesn’t need to match the other...just coordinate on some level...

The reason i asked about painting the fireplace ....it looks like concrete bricks...when you select your rug there may be a soft color from the rug that will work....

Rug - I kinda forgot about your table and its legs - you want that to 'show' --- might be nice with fp art you have - or this type idea:

I don’t know what you’re looking for in the way of lighting but this is a nice floor lamp.

I really like the rug, lamp and table. I am very open to repainting the fireplace and I know the painting I have above the firebox is too small. I have been looking for something that would work, but haven't found anything yet. What color do you recommend for the fireplace?

I had thought I needed a flloor lamp that was chunkier, but love the tripod stand on the one you found. I had been looking for something with a chunky wood base but that was hard to find and I was saving my budget for a a rug, new dining table and chairs and new art for the living room.

Love the round dining table idea. I was thinking that getting some chairs that picked up the color of the rug I choose would liven and warm up the room.

I like the new arrangement. It makes for a nice conversation area and makes the fireplace the focal point. I think this rug is beautiful.

You could probably get away with a 42" round dining table. That will seat 4 comfortably.

I think the dining table you have is great in that space...just remember a solid color rug is kind of a problem as every little piece of lint or drips or stains will show...more so in a dining area...

Also want to point your view furniture choices are the best....but the rest needs to be braver to go with those choices..more distinct colors...wispy blurry colors dont go with the mid-century vibe..this is why the rug color needs to be stronger...as a beginning to a new exciting look....once you move forward with the rugs a perfect shade will emerge for the fireplace...the rugs dont have to have big splashes of color but the color has to be braver....

IMO the room should have a 'foyer' created by a console table. mirror/art and the chairs. Place the sofa centered on the window and add drapery panel in a neutral color

I like how this layout opens to the dining area and creates an entrance.

I don’t have a TV in this room currently as there is a den area off the living room that is cozy for TV watching.

I also like the foyer idea...only the back of the couch and a rug runner from the door behind the couch will work too...keeping the cozy couch area and fireplace as the focal point..not sure facing the dining room is what i would want to see from the couch

I see your point about how the sofa faces. I also will be replacing the window and may make it 18 inches deeper - which is the original design according to my neighbors. A former owner made the window shallower.

Okay that’s a new one to me...how do you make a window 18” deeper?

It is an easy change when you replace the window.

    What do you mean deeper?

Why would anyone alter the fireplace? As well said, bit of bold color suited to fp, could let its bricks and its size, be fine.

    Retro, anyone... :)
