layout help with long narrow living room

Our living room is typical of craftsman style houses of this time period. Long and narrow with fireplace flanked by built in bookcases. The room has been a challenge to figure out in terms of layout because there are 3 openings of the room (2 entries to a sun porch) and one to the main entrance/foyer. I have basically split it into 2 areas—a reading nook (which is my kids favorite spot as it is near a sunny window) and the main sitting area. We don’t have a family room so the TV has to go in this room as well as the kids instruments and music stands. I hate seeing the TV when you enter the house so moved it against the wall across from the fireplace. The chairs across from the couch are for mock up only, they usually are in the sun room.

My questions are do you agree with where the TV is now and rough layout of couch and chairs? Any suggestions for chairs that might work well with the coach? I am not a huge fan of swivel chairs but thought perhaps small ones might work well because then kids could swivel to see TV better. I need to replace the console for the TV and found one I really like at CB2 but it is the exact length of the TV? I know typically one should go longer than TV dimensions. Would it be really bad to buy a console the same length?

Also looking to replace lamp and side table by green chair in sitting area. I was thinking of a tall standing lamp instead. Any suggestions?

Also we are renting do stuck with the color of the. wall paint. Thank you!

I agree that it's odd to walk in and see the TV. I would want to fix that first. to me, I would put the TV above the fireplace and place the sofa across from the fireplace and then place accent chairs and other instruments, etc. places chair to the left of the fireplace facing into the room so there is a seating grouping of at least one chair and the sofa.

If you put the TV above the fireplace make sure to get a really good extendable mounting. There are ones that extend the TV down far enough that you don't strain your neck when watching.

If you would prefer not to have the TV quite so visible above your fireplace you can get a picture that you slide across the TV and hide it from view.

There are consoles that you can use as well to hide a TV if you place it elsewhere.

In order to get the best help here you do need a drawing of the layout and measurements of your room. It helps everyone give you more clear and accurate suggestions.

Thank you for the advice. I am really not a fan of TVs over fireplaces so would prefer to put on a console. See earlier question in sizing. I drew out the floor plan to help give a better sense of the room and constraints. It is a 12’x23’ room. I wasn’t sure if the comment on not liking to see the TV when entering the room was based on the current configuration? What I meant was previously it was across from the couch under the stained glass windows but I didn’t like this for 2 reasons. One when you enter the house the first thing you saw was a huge TV since the living room opens up to the main foyer and the front door was across from the wall with the stain glass windows. I also didn’t like it because the TV partially hid the stain glass windows.

View front walking in the front door to the house

View front foyer when you first walk in

The current (relatively new) placement of the TV across from the fireplace and perpindicular to the couch at least hides TV from view until you are in the living room but I am not sure if it makes the room to crowded? Again any thoughts on chairs (ones there now are for mock up on placement) or on a coffee table appreciated. Thanks!

got it, sorry in your original post I thought your front door was the door going into the room behind the fireplace. these pics help orient the room for me better. yes, I agree the tv is in the right spot. some other thoughts on configuration. when you walk in from the front door you look at the back of the sofa and it makes the room look smaller and cuts of the room. how about trying the sofa under the stained glass window. two chairs can instead go where the couch is and you could put a round table between them. the large chair you have by itself looks lonely and not part of the seating grouping, the couch cuts it off from the room. I also agree the console for the tv needs to be longer than the width of the tv. swivel chairs would be a good option and heres a couple fun options, from west elm, swivel and stationary with a modern vibe. maybe put the instruments in the area where the one sole chair is currently.

can you take a pic of the wall where the TV is standing in front of the fireplace. I need to see that wall better to provide perspective on console.

how do you use the room behind the fireplace? is it a porch or a room you use all the time, wondering if you could put the instruments in that room?

Thank you Theresa for all the suggestions. I had actually looked at these swivel chairs at West Elm but wasn’t sure so glad to see you recommend them. Room behind fireplace is a small but lovely closed in porch. It is hninsulated so we only use it 1/2 the year.

    Wall across from fireplace

This was the console I was eyeing but not long enough.

love that console too but it also may be a little too tall. I tend to think a longer one would be better. how long is that wall? a console that spans most of that wall would look great IMO. as for the chairs, they have some fun colors, which color are you drawn to?

what do you think about putting the couch under the window on the other side of the room?

Yes I will try moving the couch and see. Also will look at longer consoles. Thank you so much. Need to think what colors might work for chairs. I think lighter more neutral shade would work but I have younger kids.

I was thinking more about the console you like. I looked it up and its 57in long. how long is your tv? it actually may work just fine?

I was thinking because you have kids, probably more of a medium to dark color. teal would look awesome with your caramel couch. but I think many of the options would work.

TV is large 57” so concern is it goes against advice for console to be larger than TV

Given all the blue accents that play off picture and fireplace do you think teal would work for chair color?

yes, if you have 57in tv, need larger console...darn it. I think teal and blues can look awesome. I think gold accents would work great as a pallet. gold legs on a tv console, you have gold in your art above the fireplace too

pillows to help integrate the pallet

if you arent into that pallet, how about adding a grass green. green is in your art and it would look great with blue and with your couch..

Please post what you decide to do Gwyn! I have a challenging narrow living room too. I really like your space already and think several of Theresa’s suggesting are great. I love teal with cobalt blue.

Will do. It might take me a bit of time to implement but will be sure to post back.
