Provide supplemental watering to container citrus to keep roots cool?

Hi all,

It's getting pretty hot here in Phoenix, well be breaking 110 for a several days in a row this week. I've got young Meyer lemon and grapefruit trees in containers under my front porch. They get morning sun and shade in the afternoon. Grapefruit is loving life and growing like crazy, while the Meyer is not happy with the heat.

The Meyer is in a pure pine bark and perlite mix (5:1). It drains fast but stays most for several days so I end up watering it about 2x/week. It doesn't look "happier" after I water it, suggesting it's not suffering from dehydration. My question is, should I water more frequently as a way of cooling the roots, even though it doesn't need the water from a hydration standpoint? I don't want to cause over watering problems, either. I have a couple of inches of bark mulch on top to also help insulate the roots a bit.
